Worth noting that the Education (Scotland) Act 1872 made all education mandatory between the ages of 5 and 13, but at the same time introduced physical punishment for pupils speaking Gaelic, and effectively banned Gaelic Medium Education. It wasn't for over 100 years that GME was ever seen again. I think that might be one of the reasons Gaelic isn't as popular anymore.

So interesting. The largest chambered cairn in the UK. A cursus monument. The neolithc building at Claish farm. It all must mean something, but what? There is something distinct about Callander. Something about how it sits at the confluence of the outflow of two lochs, with Ben Ledi sitting behind and in the shelter of a wooded crag that is itself part of the Highland Boundary Fault. It is special somehow and not quite like any other location. As the Ben sits as the first proper high point after the rift valley of the upper Forth it is visible from long distances in the lowlands. Those neolithic men and women must have looked at the Ben and thought "There is Callander" (or whatever name it had then). They would have known that they would have found plentiful fresh water, fertile land and nutritious fish in the rivers. Perhaps, they would have felt safe in the shadow of the crag? Perhaps the lochs, rivers and waterfalls were magical to them in some way? If only we could see with their eyes!

Wonderful presentation. I have learned so much watching that. The camp at Bochastle near Callander looks as if it might have been quite convenient for the railway! You do wonder if the Victorians knew what they were digging up.

This was a brilliant presentation. The Roman presence in Ayr wasn't found under a Tesco... but when they were doing some rescue archaeology on the site of the New Ayr Academy in what was the Craigie Estate in Ayr.

Great video. I wish I was taught Gaelic at school instead of French. To truly understand a culture you need to understand the language, and unfortunately many of us don't understand our true native language anymore and gaelic place names are seen as meaningless confusing words. There needs to be a revival of gaelic in Scotland!
