FRINGE FITNESS FAMILY WIND DOWN
Hey guys, this is a mash up of some of the end of summer wind down in the mountains. I felt great! My son was feeling great and it was a really good time!
So this was my first attempt at filming in these kinds of ways, I didnt annotate any of the video so some things may not make sense out of context. for example my son asks about a kind of stone and i tell him maybe flint he pointed at and then he has a piece of sandstone in his hand.. that kind of stuff. Also i really need to work on balancing out audio so you can hear and not be so lazy.
As for the workouts i filmed, i did 35ish min EMOMs of all kinds of stuff. I would work out in the a.m. then we would head out on an adventure, come back rest and eat. then head back out for round 2! It was a perfect itinerary for a vacation!

    Do you feel you miss anything with bith if these tools without using a barbell? I love the idea ilof not going to the gym and I dkjt have room for a squat rack and barbells are more expensive.

      Yes I definitely miss out on loading up higher weight with back squats. I will never have the biggest strongest legs in the room. But there are many examples of kettlebells and sandbag users that have massive legs. More reps with moderate weight seems to be a good recipe for a lot of fellas

    I'm curious how you would compare this to barbell training in terms of developing maximal strength?

      Well weight is weight, but you definitely tax more muscles at once with a sandbag. Most fit men would not choose to back squat with 100lbs but bearhug squatting with 100lb sandbag is very challenging… maybe that helps you imagine what I’m trying to say lol

      @@Thefringefitnessproject Yes weight is weight but how the implement allows you to hold, balance or position the weight is going to be different for each implement. I haven't used sand bags so I'm not familiar with how well the implement can be utilized for maximal strength development as compared to an implement I am used to like barbells. I can certainly use my imagination and see that the ability to load your body may be more awkward than a barbell but does that awkwardness limit your ability to maximally load your body enough that it makes the same bag an inefficient tool for maximal strength development? And is it less efficient than the barbell at the task to such a degree that it's not a valid substitute for the barbell? These are the questions in my mind. I like the idea of using sand bags for maximal strength development because I don't have the time to go to the gym to use a barbell and I don't have room at my house for a squat rack. The sand bag seems like a possible option. I like the simplicity of it as well. I'm just not familiar with it to know how it compares to barbell work. I appreciate the response.

      So I started with a duffel style bag and it wasn’t what I was looking for. I’d say start with 100lb and you can always add sand over time

    thanks for the video. I want to get into sandbags but i just don't know where to start. do you have a video for the absolute beginner. I don't do dead lifts or weighted squads. but i want to get strong in case i need to protect myself and my family.

      You’re welcome! I think you’re doing it for all the right reason my man! Let me say it to you like this, yes you do all those movements, just with how much weight those are all everyday movements. The weight just needs to be lighter for now, so just go light what ever light is for you zero judgement on yourself. Then increase the reps, then the weight and that’s how you will get stronger 🙏 good luck and do NOT count yourself out or limit yourself!

    Been working with my 30kg,40 and 50kg sandbags enjoying it 15,10, and 5 overhead jerk and throws followed by 1 minute skipping between sets looking forward to getting consistent with my 60kg so it's working

    Ten years ago, I discovered and made my own gravel-weight bag, around 33 KG. I loved it and damm could swing it around!!, only problem was it gave me tennis elbow, which impacted my sports hobby, and still occasionally flares up. So my advice for the weight bag is to enjoy, but be careful on how you swing it around

      Yes they can be brutal on the body if not careful! My 150# bag teaches me many of lessons! I’m not completely comfortable with ballistic type movements with it just yet it’s body weight for me, actually more than body weight current day lol.. I use it more as a “grind” movement bag

    Great work man & awesome workout partner! Is Luna a frenchie / Boston terrier mix? Looks larger than most Boston terriers, but still very athletic.

      Haha thanks so much for the compliments and great K9 eye Luna has only recently gotten old enough to partake in my workouts lol 😂 she is a Boston but everyone thinks she is a frenchie… then they get closer and go damn she’s a big athletic frenchie, wait is she a Boston… she is a Boston but her DNA was a little heavy in the frenchie side like over 20% which from what I know most Bostons have around 10-15%. She is a really good lil girl and his is a big pain in the ass but all in all a great listener and really understands what you are saying to her, sometimes she chooses to be bad on purpose that’s all lol 😂

      So I have a few, this one is a 100lb bag but I have heard from numerous sources that you can always fit more than that in the.. I put 3 40lb bags of sand in it. Some add steel shot to get even more weight and some add rubber mulch to take up space and absorb a little impact as well!

I have just been picking it up and throwing it over my shoulder like you demo'd, did a bit of standing around bear hugging it, that's quite enough LOL,,,,I'll work on your EMOM carries.     There's no possible way to do this without your core. Full body means exactly that - full body. Remove a muscle group and see what happens. Lol! That said, I do standard gym workouts that I enjoy, but I also really enjoy sandbag lift/movements and weighed jump rope training as well.

      It’s a heart rate monitor/fitness tracker. Especially with kettlebells they are a must!!! Watches get in the way too much

      I do loaded carries with push ups on Sunday mornings. Call it the Johnny Cash workout. Amazing how many people stare when carry luggage through the airport.

    I appreciate the vulnerability of looking awkward, but the getup is a damn fine exercise and well worth the effort. FWIW I kick off with the leg on the same side as the sandbag, rather than opposite-side leg as you do in this video -- but I'm not going as heavy as you are here, so that may be irrelevant. Thanks for bringing us like-minded functional strength folks along for the ride.

      Wow thanks so much very awesome comment brother! I loveeee when I get my “failures” and mis steps and even the stuff that makes me feel like a child on video! And I will definitely give the same side leg a try as well! It looks so simple just get up but for some reason it is not lol! I just posted a shot you would like for sure then as well lol!       I would be hard pressed to have to pick one or the other! I love them both and I go through seasons you could say! They both make you STRONGER but I get what your saying with the sandbags, definitely a farm boy thickness kinda strength lol

    Good video. my life became more transient due to my work about a year before the pandemic hit and I have been struggling to get the food and nutrition part back in order since then...some weeks I can follow a sensible diet some weeks I can't and I can feel the difference at 40 years old vs in my early twenties. Keep trucking, thanks for another realistic health and fitness video.

      Yea it’s not easy and takes some commitment and planning to make it all happen, I’m not perfect at all but I do plan ahead a lot and it’s been my greatest success

    For me I see food as a way to feed my muscles. I see it as a way to get protein. I know sugar is bad and will get me fat and diabetic. I don't drink soda. I also have breakfast everyday and I wake up early. I have really good habits. That's why I'm not fat. I'm don't have a lot of muscle but I try to have really good conditioning and I lift.

      I don’t know exactly what that would look like but it doesn’t sound good! I have had too many close calls to count lol… filming stuff later in the work out lets me see myself tired but I also sometimes miss out on the oopsys I have early lol
