Given the source material, it'd do alright as an American Horror Stories episode. Would probably have to be set sometime in the future though so as to not mess with the established AHS timeline.

Funny enough, "American Horror Stories" (the anthology series) had an episode dedicated to the old rumor/legend of inbred, misshapen freaks roaming the National Parks and cannibalizing guests (which is why so many people vanish in then. They could have taken that idea and expanded it to this. So many forests and places like them have a haunting history and it would be interesting to see them be expanded upon.
