North-facing rooms get cooler, indirect light, making colours appear duller and greyer. To counteract this, choose warmer hues like soft yellows, warm whites, or light beiges. The colours help to create a cosy atmosphere despite the cooler light.
South-facing rooms are bathed in warm, natural light throughout the day, making colours appear more vibrant. You can play with both cool and warm tones here. Cool blues, greens, and greys work well to balance the brightness, while warm colours like terracotta, links and yellow will glow. Interior paints come in several finishes but the most common we use are emulsion and eggshell. Check with your paint supplier as they are available in different sheen levels.
Emulsion/ flat finish:
- Appearance: provides a non-reflective velvety look that hides imperfections on walls.
- Best for: low-traffic areas like bedrooms, ceilings, and living rooms where a softer look is desired.
- Maintenance: harder to clean, so avoid in areas where walls might get scuffed or dirty.
Eggshell finish:
-Appearance: Slightly more sheen than matte, with a subtle lustre that adds warmth and depth to walls.
- Best for: living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways. It's always a good balance between durability and aesthetics.
- Maintenance: easier to clean than matt, making it suitable for moderate-traffic areas.
The type of wood on your furniture can significantly influence your paint choice. Warm wood tones like cherry or mahogany pair well with cool blues and greens, while cooler wood tones like ash or oak work nicely with warm colours, like beige, cream, or soft yellows.
