#51 Contessa 32, The Last Leg of Our Atlantic Circuit. Azores to West Cork, Summer 2021

Starting at the bottom of the Caribbean, Mattis and I set sail from Trinidad at the end of April 2019 and we ventured north to Union Island, Tobago Cays, Bequia and Guadeloupe. We spent a month cruising before sailing our longest passage. 2700nm to the Azores. Is she a powerboat or a sailboat? I can't see how you can ever sail towing that three-bladed sea anchor around. Good God Almighty!

    Hi Mo and Mattis Great to see your Azores to Ireland trip. I am planning an Atlantic circuit with a Contessa 32. What is your view of Hydrovane versus Windpilot. Especially dead down wind in the trades? I hope you are both well Cheers Stephen

      @Contessa32Jingo Рік тому

      Hi Stephen, exciting times planning for a voyage, when are you hoping to go? We found the Hydrovane very steady and reliable running before the trades, and we love how simply it is to set, with no lines in the cockpit. We don't have any experience of other wind vanes. The only possible downside we found with the Hydrovane was the added weight on the stern. Best of luck and enjoy the planning!

    Tantastic 💥 My relatives had a co32 and I did my day skipper at aged 12years old(ages ago) I was always a bit spooked when conditions got rough and then I was shown a BBC documentary about the '79 fastnet race! Now that gave us an unbridled confidence,as kids,in the CO32. One summer of west coast of Scotland we'd be sailing in 500ft of water and the depth sounder would suddenly show a depth of 200ft! So my uncle would steer 15 degrees to port/ starboard and echo sounder would return to a depth of 500ft then within seconds it would be showing 200ft! It turned out to be N.A.T.O. submarines practicing hiding under surface vessels. Only logical explanation. Great channel a subb👍👍😁....

    How much chain do you think you can carry in your contessa 32 locker?

      We have 50m of 8mm chain spliced to 60m of 14mm nylon. You'd easily fit twice that in the locker, but we don't as we don't want all that weight up in the bows.

    A bit concerned by your chain plates. Where was she built? I am thinking Lowestoft as the Sadler built Contessa's chain plates go down to the keel bolts. This makes the boat stiffer which of course means faster and points better. Great classic, fast for her age, stable, great sea boat, safe and forgiving. Sailed many miles in them and would take them out in anything. Good luck.

    In my opinion this is a very valuable video. One of my pet peeves is a winch handle remaining in an untended winch. I think this stems from an article decades ago about the dangers of reel winches, then frequently seen on main halyards. Often during reefing the brake would be eased off as a man, hands on a handle in the winch, tried to slowly lower the main. It was not uncommon for control to be lost, the main plummeting, winch spinning wildly, and the handle to be thrown, often with enough force to go right through the deck, ending up in the cabin. Injuries could be severe. I believe it was Rod Stephens who was quoted as saying, "No reel winch should ever be aboard any boat." Ever since I have regarded a handle remaining in an untended winch as I would view a loaded handgun casually left on a table in a home: an Extremely Bad Practice which will result in a very bad outcome sooner or later. Look around any harbor and you will see legions of Lubbers Afloat. How many of them do you think have ever taken apart one of their winches?

  • @pauljnolan1000

    I don't understand. I have always thought the Contessa 32 was a sailboat, the finest in production today. And yet you seem to be constantly motoring. Sails furled, motor throbbing. I don't know how you can stand it. Motor out, motor in. What's the point of that? In light air you want more sail area, not less. If the wind drops, a sailor reaches for the drifter, not the ignition key. Yet I see your main furled and the clew of the headsail unrolled a few feet like a storm jib. But the air is light. My advice: Get rid of the engine. You'll get rid of half your maintenance hours and expense. Your boat will be cleaner, quieter, and a LOT faster. Your enjoyment, skill, and satisfaction will increase greatly. You'll find a different world, a different sport. (You might consider giving the laptop and jib furler the deep six as well.) Just a thought. Paul

What would you estimate the service life of the rubber convaluted hose jubilee clipped to the stern tube is..?.next to the carbon sealing rings on the prop shaft..
