I like this. The basic sound is good. The Fuzz control actually has some range, and produces usable sounds on low settings. The internal trimpot is useful, though I wonder whether a third knob with same function might be even better. I would pair this with an EQ pedal.

I have 2 V8 Black Muffs. This sounds great!

My recipe for a much more versatile Muff: add a 4-position rotary, as in the BYOC Large Beaver (mid notch, flat mids, mid boost, tonestack bypass). Add a small treble bleeder cap to the sustain pot. Use transistors with not too high hfe, maybe bc239. And ... dang! ... The creamiest and most flexible Muff. Would be nice to see this in a production model

Suggestion: Make a 5 knob Deluxe version, with a bass control and a smooth control instead of the internal trim pot. Maybe use a trim pot to bias the input transistor. This should make this pedal MUCH more versatile.

I studied Russian Muffs (hehe) for so long. There are things I couldn't figure out. But the main thing I saw when checking the components wasn't the hfe of the transistor. The bassy sound comes mostly from drifting clipping capacitors that are right beside the diodes in the big muff circuit. Standard value for a Sovtek Muff is 47 nF. However, a lot of Big Muffs have somewhere around 33 nF in the first section and around 42-45 nF in the second stage. But I also had Sovtek Big Muffs that had wildly different values like 50-55 nF. I had this one Black Russian Big Muff once. Man it sounded superb. I was always testing it side by side against other Sovtek Big Muffs. Nothing could beat it. It had tons of gain, it was creamy, it sounded very middy but yet scooped. It sounded magical. And most important, the sound was very well rounded. I never could figure out how to achieve that sound in a Big Muff. I checked everything and just couldn't find any special things in the circuit, except a drifted clipping capacitor. But that alone didn't give me the same sound when I tried to clone it.... Those things are borderline magic. Does anybody has a secret for a creamy yet bassy sovtek muff?????

Had a really rad black bubble font which I loved but I ran it side by side with a nano bass big muff and aside from the bad bypass on the sovtek, they were the same. Sold the sovtek and eventually sold the nano bass muff for the green reissue. It's nice not having to pay the vintage prices to get the tone.

This is such a good demo! Thanks for demonstrating the differences. All of them sound awesome. Im really loving the Zonk. It has a harmonic content that is so interesting. I would love to see a shoot out on bass with these pedals!

is there any vst plugin that sounds like this?

It almost sounds like it has some phaser going on. I guess why. Playing notes that have some specific harmonic relationships. Like octaves that are slightly detuned maybe.
