Stockfish 16.1 Depth 20 VS Stockfish 16.1 Depth 50
Anish Giri mentioned watching this video during game 12 a day ago, said engines aren't just good calculators but have a better emergent understanding because a depth 20 can draw depth 60 even as black
Really? If he really mentioned this small channel specifically, then that's amazing... Any links so I can see?
@Stockfisher My comment keeps getting removed, maybe because I'm pasting link to video. Anyway, it is the Chess24 five hour fory minute long coverage of game 12. Go to the 1 hour 40 minute mark. It must be this game because Anish mentions that it is a Ragozin.
I always ask myself: how the engine code was done? Thats so complex, is it pure calc? How computer can analyse chess complexity. Its so amazing. Very good channel.
Thanks, you can look at the actual Stockfish code on github ( github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish ). There are some good UA-cam videos that briefly explain how a Chess engine like SF evaluates a position, which you may find interesting: ua-cam.com/video/U4ogK0MIzqk/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/w4FFX_otR-4/v-deo.html
Instead of capping the depth, maybe cap the time, with ponder off ofc. Makes it a bit more interesting I think.
I think depth 10 vs 60 would be better to study whether deep think would make a difference compare to average good human calculations
Man nice song selection and very cool game. Keep it up
Appreciate it
Make depth 20 as white and depth 60 as black to give equal'er footing... This is just deep preparation... Not interesting whatsoever
equal'er footing is what causes the uninteresting lines though.. SF depth 60 will take even less risks as black
Good to know the extra 40 moves doesn’t make a difference. From now on, I’ll only calculate 20 moves ahead.
More than depth 20 is usually not needed, but I'm sure depth 60 could've won in a more imbalanced opening with bigger hash size for deeper selective search
100 years from now there will be human who will be able to play like that. Just a matter of time
How the elo the same if the depth is different?
I'd be able to win this game.
Stocktfish gave last check for no reason lol
New stockfish is absolutely insane compared to old one Doesn't even castle his king, just moves his king away when checked
music goes hard af. gj.
Would be interesting to see what depth would lose to depth 60
Why it's evil and how did you know it is? 😂😂😂
It just is 😂
Just like mittens was
Looks like Ding Gukesh
Pretty lackluster style of play if I do say so myself😎
That's why I'm forcing them to play a more dynamic opening leading to more interesting and risky positions
In future videos
@@Stockfisher Fair😂 I should've specified pretty lackluster quality of play (weak moves)😎
Why deep 60 doesn't win
Someone else already asked this, this was my response: "Both sides are running the same Stockfish 17 engine, meaning they use identical algorithms to evaluate positions and search for moves. While Depth 60 searches deeper and can refine its understanding of future positions better than Depth 20, the difference is often incremental rather than decisive. Depth 20, already seeing 10 full moves ahead, is incredibly strong and capable of finding highly accurate moves. Depth 60, on the other hand, can spot subtler improvements or anticipate deeper counterplay, which is why its evaluation from the opening to the middlegame improved from +0.14 to +0.50. However, this slight advantage was not enough to convert into a win, largely because both engines play extremely cautiously without an opening book, minimizing risks and often steering towards draws. In more imbalanced, complex, or dynamic positions, Depth 60 might have been able to outmaneuver Depth 20."
Best endgame by tal
The smartest fish ever? Stockfish.
It would be interesting if both engines have eval bar is each side or they are usually same eval?
The evaluations are similar but almost never the same, you can see the analysis of each move played in my description (dropbox link to 2 text files). I'll maybe put the evaluations of both engines in the videos too
means you can calc 20 moves u can play good chess?
Depends how good you are at evaluating positions mostly
Looks not like a 2800 ELO game, looks like a 28 ELO game. What a bullshit.
How so??
Like how did you run it till 60 depth like do you gotta wait for it to reach there or is there any faster way as the one on Lichess takes a lot of time to even reach depth 30 for a move?
I run it on my own PC's hardware, with 10 CPU threads... Then I let it run a while until it's done calculating.. Yes, it takes some time, from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the complexity of the position
@Stockfisher Yea but still 30 min to 3 hours based on the position is still too much like it definitely would require a lot of hardwork for a game between the engines which lasts for these many moves. Appreciate your efforts man! Also, I wanna know if I can run the engines to this much depth on my PC by installing any sort of applications as I did not understand your way of doing it totally. So kindly lemme know about this as running engines to good depth can help in openings preparation.
@@BusyPerson25 Anyone can run Stockfish on their PC, the better your hardware, the faster it can calculate positions. You can download the newest version of Stockfish here: stockfishchess.org/download/ After downloading it, simply install Chess GUI software if you want (I personally like www.playwitharena.de/ ), or use the command prompt / shell. I recommend increasing the hash size a bit because then the selective search searches deeper for promising moves.
Power of the ultimate chess opening💪💪💪
What does depth 60 even mean? An average game of chess doesn't last 60 moves. Depth 60 is almost the entire game length of search; it's like solving the game in entirety. Where's the fun in that?
Depth 60 in Stockfish means the engine looks 60 plies (half-moves) ahead, not 60 moves. It doesn’t calculate every position but uses techniques like alpha-beta pruning to focus on promising moves. Even at depth 60, the engine isn't "solving" chess due to the game's immense complexity
Top strongest world chess champion: 1- kaparov 2- fishcher 3- Carlsen 4- Tal 5- Alekhine
stockfish 60 actually had a 0.4 advantage but it became equal after a decent move
It didn't suddenly become 'equal' after SF depth 20 played a decent move, that's just SF 16 analyzing the game afterwards at depth 20, not fully understanding the game himself.. Stockfish depth 60 started off with an advantage of 0.14 but managed to improve his position incrementally, which still wasn't enough. His biggest advantage was +0.45 in the game. @@Stockfisher great analysis
What’s the name of the song?
It's in the description, you can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/9gBTKiVqprE/v-deo.html
Stockfisch 17 Depth 50 white, vs Stockfisch 17 depth 20 black!
or depth 60
@@scottwarren4998 Currently working on Depth 20 black vs depth 80 white
Sin ta 3000
So stockfish 17 thinks queen's pawn is better than king's?
At depth 60, yes... Look in my description for the stockfish analysis per move
What a Queen Sac
It looks like both are awaiting their opponent to make a mistake, but it never happens 😂
Exactly, that's why I'll force them to play more imbalanced openings in the future, and increasing the depth difference so they take bigger risks. One day SF 17 depth 20 will get humiliated
So according to stockfish, every move that stockfish does is a good or great move😅
I saw 9 videos of you in my for you page
Damn, my bad lol... Maybe because you were inside my chess playlist or not?
Would be interesting if the stockfish 60 knew it was playing stockfish 20. maybe it would find traps that are objectivly not the best move, but stockfish 20 would not see
I've also thought about that, but you'd need to modify the engine's code for that, which is very difficult to pull off correctly
There are anti-stockfish AIs trained to specifically beat Stockfish exploiting its weaknesses, but they aren't good against other engines.
@@TheBlablawww That sounds interesting. Are there open source ones / can you link some? Just wondering how they work.
@@TheBlablawww That's very interesting, mind sending me a link or something, so I can check it out myself?
the only unsolvable puzzle for stockfish, tried it myself even with 70 depth stockfish
Didn't go to depth 70 myself, but found out that Stockfish can solve it after a while with mate search though
Good work man, looking forward to another video from you!
Thanks for your support, currently working on the painful depth 80 one, but it's not that bad because I'm in the middle of an exam period anyways
If there is no knight/rook/queen/bishop sacrifice, it can't be a tal game 😢😢 the computer should have sacrificed something
He sacrificed Ding's winning opportunities though
Wait i don't see any book opening
Wdym?
It would be nice to see stockfish 17 depth 60 vs itself in a few openings such as the catalan which is teeming with many different possible ways to play forward, the ruy lopez with a6 to avoid berlin and see how stockfish handles one of the most played lines in chess and finally i think it would also be very instructive if u could create a video of the advanced caro kann too. Although stockfish deems it an inaccuracy it would be really interesting how stockfish handles one of the most annoying setups where essentially piece mobility is infinitely restricted due to the pawn structure
Althought all games are likely to end up as draws it would be really interesting to see how stockfish simplifies it down to a drawn endgame. In other words the focus is the moves rather than the result
@@omnimosquito1342 If both sides are depth 60, it'll most likely end in a draw, but still very interesting to see how the best engine would handle all these different openings against itself... I'll put it in the list of video ideas
Kind of looks like AlphaZero vs Stockfish, cool.
Where is the information that the stockfish rating is 4075?
The 4075 rating shown in the video is just a placeholder. Determining Stockfish's exact elo is difficult because the elo system relies on comparisons within a pool of opponents, and Stockfish is at the very top, its expected elo is around 3623 under standard conditions. However, with the white engine at depth 60, it’s safe to say its effective strength in that setup likely exceeded 3623, how much exactly? Can't really tell
Can I ask how did you play let them play, is there a time control, or is it unlimited time on each side?
I limited the depth of each side, there isn't a time limit specifically, but they don't continue thinking forever, longest calculation time in this video was like 2-3 hours for 1 move
If you made them play a kings gambit then id expect depth 60 to win. Possibly even a Sicilian could decide it for depth 60.
using the analysis is kinda useless cause they're both stronger than it
It can be useful for the people that are relatively new to Chess and even advanced players, the analyzing engine is still way ahead of the strongest Chess players we have today, but it also makes the games more interesting and less bland to watch imo
No human will ever comprehend this game.
Agreed. I am 1600 and I have no idea what even occured in this game.
It's a Nimzo-Indian. I'm 2100 on LiChess and understood it perfectly.
Well ..... Peak mango colson could maybe comprehend like 60-80% of the game
Who tf is mango Colson 😂@@mayankthakur5341
@@mayankthakur5341 no he couldn't, it would be like a 1500 understanding a a 2700-2800 game
Why does this engine prefer d4 over e4 on move 1. I thought engines play Berlins only
Because stockfish 17 at depth gave a slight advantage to d4 over e4.. Here is an example analysis of the first best move at high depths, shortly after depth 60, stockfish 17 prefers e4 again, slightly below depth 60, it was c4...
