Easy Birdsmouth Joint Cut
The birdsmouth cut is tricky to get a hang of it at first but you can make your own joints without a steep learning curve using this easy method. It's a strong joint perfect for lean to structures or small sheds.

The Dreamline Essence double sliding door available from the home depot. See what tools you need and what you get in the box as well as some things to look out for during installation. See where you can go wrong installing this yourself and don't make the same mistakes i did. I am not a professional or affiliated with any vendor. I'm just a home owner that wanted some new shower doors. If you h...

I bought one but mine miss the plástico clips Im trying to buy it but I dont know the size I need do you know the size of the clips
You are no teacher all I wanted you to show me was how to cut the bird mouth shape cut at the end of a rafter that comes from the top of the roof to were it hangs over the bottom joist sitting on the bricks so it cant slide off ? Is this too much to ask you to show me instead of you fucking waffling on teaching us a maths lesson.. wot is it with you trades men .Just explain what the bird mouth does then fuckin show us how it works using 2 pieces of scrap wood we only want to grab the gist of it and show wot to use to arrive at the angle and for God's sake keep the maths lesson to youself
Thanks. So helpful for someone not great at maths! Daft question. If the bases is 4x4 why is the cut using the speed square 3.5? Thanks

Can you add one on how to adjust the doors please .everything you did and showed was awesome and very detailed thank you so so much I will continue and highly recommend your videos
Excellent video! Thank you!
Thank you for this, I could not figure out why it would not hold at the top! Great video
perfect! this is exactly what I needed to know. thanks for the great vid!
Every company that sells carts, and shelving such as this, should have you do a video on their product page! This was the best "how to" video I've ever seen. I will now go back and actually be able to assemble the cart I was putting together before all the connectors opened and sent everything flying (including the nice but bruise it gave me!
3.5 for a 4x4? Where did the 3.5 number come from?
A 4x4 post from a home improvement store is typically 3.5 inches wide. In this case it's the width of the header. So I notched a 3.5 inch birdsmouth. Measure your top plate and that's how much you cut out
You have no idea how much I appreciate you and this video!! The video makes so much sense and is easy to follow. My stress of worrying about how to put this unit together is gone and I can do it myself! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
it was going good but then the sleeves keep coming off.....what do I do now!!!
At about 9:10 you can see that the sleeves won't grip. Sometimes the coating on the legs isn't grooved very deep and the sleeve will slip down. You can force them to grab by hammering them up and the shelf down. Or you can try one notch higher or one notch lower.
fantastic video.....the written instructions are so horrible and your video so clear and sensible.....thank you
Right on. Yeah, I could've bumbled my way through it (like I do with the IKEA stuff that I buy), but your clear instructions saved me about 30 to 40 minutes of trial-and-error (and a lot of frustration). Thanks!
Thank you sooooooooooooo much 😘. I just bought one & was trying to follow the instructions. Very confusing. You made it very simple. Will assembly after work.
yesterday I tried to put one of these up and had a terrible time. I had a second unit and I wasn’t about to spend three hours trying to figure out how to do it so I watched your video and thank you very very very much! I just put a three shelf unit together in about 20 minutes. ❤
It's easy when you know the trick. I just wish they would make the ridges in the legs deeper to hold the half shells in place and not slide down with the shelf when setting it.
I know this is 3 years old, but I’m so grateful for this video! I had looked at 3 other videos and this one made SENSE!! Had my hoodie on and got it done!!
I'm glad it helped you out. These are good shelves. I still have my original ones that I struggled to put together years ago.
To this date how much would you charge to do this job to a costumer home ?? Hope I get some feedback thanks
I am not a professional so what I would like to pay and what they need to take the job is different. If it was for a friend I'd probably ask 300 minimum and they help me. It takes a few hours to measure and layout and cut things. Also if their walls weren't plumb/square I would tell them to go get another type of door. This door will leak at the edges if the walls aren't straight. If I was paying I'd expect 600-900 for install, they provide necessary materials.
Thank you - very helpful!
Thank you for the great video. I am confused by the math involved. Your method makes perfect sense to me! The best advice i have every learned about woodwork is to do what works for you!
All right thanks for the idea appreciate it
Thank you for your video, Super helpfull !
Bro get square
We have been using 60-inch tall HDX shelving to store kitchen stuff for years without attaching them to the wall. We recently purchased a 72-inch shelf that includes warnings about attaching to the wall, which I would strongly prefer not to do. We are not placing anything heavier than cookware on the shelves and there are no children or pets in the house. Is it really necessary to secure the shelving to the wall? Just wondering if anyone has any experience or thoughts on this. It may be simply that the company is trying to protect itself against accidents/lawsuits.
I have not had one tip yet and I have over 20 of them. I tend to tilt the shelf back a little for a bit extra security but the straps are a precaution that, depending on what items you put on top, may save someone from them falling on them. I am not aware of any legal requirement to install those in any state. Yet.
Thank you.
Definitely easier than other videos to comprehend, thank you! One question: How do you know what the pitch is?
Easy peasy! Thank you for this very simple trick.
How far over was the wall bracket from the side rail?
instructions were terrible, dreamline should have install vids.I have installed many a doors ,i loathe the side rails here, much better doors out there
Way easier to just trace the birds mouth of the side of the beam
Thanks. I am considering building out only 1/2 (So only 36" high - finding one that is 48" wide and less than 72" tall - the only ones available were $200+).
Had these doors installed by a contractor. They didn’t get the top rail level. This affects everything. Leveled the top rail and the fit on the doors improved significantly.
Important note to everyone. The walls need to be straight up and down and the rail needs to be level. If not, you will have water leaks.
@ 4:35 this saved me so much, thanks dude! I had the whole thing together and knew it didn't look right. Found this video, tore it all down and went back and fixed all locking clips to line up properly.
Thank you!! Saved me a big headache
Simple! Thanks.
I’m so doin this! Thank you! I got 13 to do on a chicken coop and another 7 on a well-house.
Thank you! Shelves successfully put together in a reasonable amount of time. From a klutz.
Your a life saver bro, I would never have gotten it set up without this video.
Good start to the advice, however if before toy took the beam down you put the wide edge of the speed square on the 4x4 mark on top of that at both ends toy would have it all marked, no need to pivot anything, much quicker, but great video, thanks
121k views…. Must be a bunch of folks building sheds out back
What size is the shed ?
Thanks- I watched so many videos and I still couldn't understand how to do the birds mouth. Yours is so simple I got it right away 🎉💛🙏
I've been putting these things together for years and I've never thought to assemble the shelves by putting them all at the base and lifting them up. I've been top-loading these things forever. Legitimately helpful tips, thank you
That's genius homey! I'm not building the Taj Mahal and this is exactly what I was looking for! I wish I saw this first and didn't waste my time watching all those other videos having to learn Pythagorean theorems.
