Are you someone who's had a dream of publishing your own book? Are you also someone who has a lot going on in your life, that tends to 'get in the way' of that very dream? Well no longer!
You are not alone in your frustrations and challenges of pushing through the business, the slog, and the overwhelm of day-to-day responsibilities to get those words written. Here, you'll find nothing by positivity around my authoring journey. As a father of six, full-time employee, homesteader (of milk goats and chickens) as well as active participant in the community, I provide my positive perspective on allowing every aspect of life, including writing, to work together for a happy symbiosis.

Ep. 145 The Art and Satisfaction of Editing with Meghan Hoesch
In this episode, I dive into how I'm researching some of my favorite books to work on my own writing craft. I talk about the challenges we've had with getting our cow's hooves trimmed, and the effects of not having them trimmed regularly. I discuss progress on my work in progress and plans for the future.
With Meghan, we discuss how she got into editing, and how and why she finds it to be a fulfilling part of the authoring journey. She gives tips and tricks for someone who, like me, might not enjoy the editing process or those who haven't had a lot of experience with editing yet.

Ep 129 Getting in the Writing Flow with Sebastian
Oh hey, that’s me! Another great episode!
Thanks for listening!
I absolutely love this guy. He is inspiring me to become an author. I’ve always wanted to but I lack the confidence.
He is an inspiration and I love how down to earth he is. The only way to build confidence it to give it a go! You should just starting writing if you haven't already
Great interview! Thanks Dan.
I'm glad you enjoyed! Thanks for listening.
This was a great episode for my current work situations. Between 2 jobs I’m working roughly 60-65 hours a week, on top of homestead chores and family life. My main job recently switched from having no task tracking system to Asana, but the switch has been quite jarring. I prefer having an app to keep track of the tasks, but I’m a semi remote worker (I cover from Mtn Home, to Burley, and as far north as Stanley, with weekly stops in our main shop in Boise that usually last less than a half hour) so the learning curve of how to manage the tasks and effectively managing time and priorities has been a little steep at times.
I can relate to this on so many levels! I work remotely as well, and coincidentally we use Asana there, but it doesn't magically fix all the things around productivity like I wish it did. Bless you for working two jobs and having the homestead that sounds wild. Hoping you can unlock some secrets to smooth out some of the crazy
The 2 jobs plus homestead has been surprisingly easy for the most part? During the busy part of the year at home, work is more in the slow season. Now, both jobs are in the busy season and home is slowing down so atleast I’ve got that going for me haha. If you ever bring the family to Twin, I can hook you guys up with some food and activities in the mall!
Listening from just east of Hansen, Idaho! My wife and I are finishing up our first year trying to homestead, and going into the first winter with animals besides chickens. Love hearing about another Idaho homesteader, and hearing about experiences you have with it. You have a great interview style too!
That's excellent! I remember the first year and trying to keep track of all the little things. What animals do you have right now? And you're and author too! Would love to have you join me for the podcast sometime so I can hear more about what you have going on! Thanks for listening!
@@thecasualauthorwe currently have the chickens, ducks…so many ducks, they multiplied so fast this summer. For livestock animals we have a couple sheep and pigs, my MIL has a ton of goats, who are all fixed though so no goats milk in our near future. Then cats and dogs of course. My Brother in law got a couple hives of bees this year, but we were told keeping them alive over the winter can be kind of hit and miss. As for my author-ness. I claim the title very loosely haha. I write a YA contemporary years ago, that looking back really wasn’t great, but was great for learning. Recently I’ve been working on a fantasy duology, but current work situations make writing an uncommon activity.
Who is this?
This is L.G. Nixon, author of The Ghost of Darwin Stewart. You can find more about her at lgnixon.com/
I thoroughly enjoyed your interview with Dr. Ford. His book "C is for Colored" is a well-written account of his life during segregation in his small town. Dr. Ford has an impeccable memory as he writes brilliantly about how he navigated from a segregated to a desegregated school system and became a successful doctor. His book should be a part of the Harford County schools and libraries.
Thank you so much for the shout out Dan! I was so thrilled to have you on the podcast and loved your perspective.
It was a blast getting to talk more abour writing on your podcast! Thanks for having me
I'll come back to this, hopefully I can write a book
I am sure that you can! And hopefully you find some encouraging tidbits in this video my process might be a bit unconventional but it's makes writing really enjoyable
This was great, thank you. I am not an author, though I have always worked on my own "stories" growing up and through college and even sometimes still, though it's more rare. There is an intimidation factor I think to trying to complete your first book. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely for me. Once in a while, like now, I get excited again to work on one of my projects, whether it's writing or visual (I'm an animator for film), so that is how I stumbled upon your interview here.
The imtimidation is so real for the first book. I remember taking years to write, edit and publish my first book. After that first one a lot of that intimidation falls away, so it's worth it to keep moving forward! I'm so impressed with animators and their skills! Creativity in any form is so important for the human brain.
I was a classmate of Larry's and we are all excited about his book. Many of us, even those who knew him well in school were unaware of what he went through. As a white student, I felt terrible about the fact that I was oblivious to what the Consolidated School students went through. (It was comforting to learn through your interviw that even Barbara didn't realize what he was going through. His book reveals the educators who were devious and secretive in their attempts to derail Larry's future. He also talks about a couple of our teachers who were absolutely essential to his survival of their attempts. Many of us not only made it through high school but made it through with good grades and went on to successful lives, largely thanks to one of those teachers. The really positive part of his book was recognizing that the majority of the issues he faced were from teachers and administrators who were resentful of the desigregation. For the most part, those same teachers are easily ideentified as sub-standard teachers by black and white students. I, for one, am so thankful to Larry for persisting iin spite of his disease to complete his book. My life partner had the same disease that he has and I fully understand the nature of those illness and how difficult it would have been for him.
Jim is like a 2nd dad to me. He has guided me through life off and on since 1991. My old motor sergeant. Him and went to car shows and I'd watch him pin stripe. Jim has knowledge I suck in. Both his books are very interesting.
Seriously a fount of wisdom! I treasured my time speaking with him and am glad to have met and learned so much from him
What a great episode! She is always so positive, inspiring and encouraging. 👏🏽🙌🏽🙏🏽
She really is! It was awesome to be able to hear her thoughts and advice directly.
Hogicorn. He's got so much character. 😅😂
Very very true. He may be special, but he owns his specialness
Oh my goodness! 🎉 I'm so excited for you. 😁 I think you'll have fun.
If you ever do a conference in Texas I would love to come meet you.
I would love that! I'm not sure I'm aware of any conferences that happen there you'll have to help me with that.
hope you sell out!!
Inspiring discussion. Great and rich story in “Broken to Beautiful” by Jake Lynch 👏
So fun to do this show with you! I'm glad my theme was positive attitude, because that is so important.
I just started writing my first book. I need to also start ending my sessions in an action scene. My biggest issue is picking up after I have ended with a conclusion.
That's always the hardest! It's actually one of the reasons I try to always leave a writing scene mid action so it's easier to pick it back up. But I know that's not always possible.
Just started writing my first book. Keeping a creative mind while working a full time job is hard.
How goes writing? Are you making progress on your book?
@@thecasualauthor it goes well. I’ve decided to just write as it comes to me. So I may have breaks in my writing where I just can’t into the right head space.
@@thecasualcoder66 I think that's a great approach! That's more or less what I do as well. I think you'll find the more you do it, but more often you find yourself in the headspace because it just starts to feel like part of your day.
@@thecasualauthor getting into the headspace can be difficult at times. I drive a semi for a living so I have plenty of time to thing but you would be amazed at how hard it is to focus on the book with the stress of driving.
I agree about mass market paperbacks, they just feel so much better and are more comfortable. I especially hate massive hardbacks, they're so uncomfortable to read from so I tend to not get them. And about Tolkien, I'd recommend starting with The Lord of The Rings series rather than The Silmarillion as it can be quite heavy in my opinion. But nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the world! Glad to have discovered your channel, gonna check out more of your videos!
Agreed on the big hardback! Definitely not worth reading that format. I appreciate the heads up on the reading order! I will take your recommendation and read the trilogy first 😊
Thanks again for having me on the show bro! 🤙
Thanks for having me on!
It was a blast! Thank you for joining me!
Knowing your limitations is really important - as is playing to your strengths... 😊
XD
🎉🎉🎉 🎂Happy birthday! Tysm for the deal. I def took advantage of it. 🙏
Thanks so much for having me on! You were a fantastic host and the interview was very fun!
Loved being on your show!
Playing video games lol
Seems an excellent alternative!
Great weekend choice!
I loved watching this!
I need more books lol. Im a truck driver and audio books are the only thing keeping me sane.
And more books!!! 😂
i thought you where going to go down the we don't have enough trees in the world for all the books glad you just stuck with the i don't have the time to read them all lol.
More goat's!
More cat's!
Girl two could be called s'mores. She looks like one
You should name a goat Milky Way or something similar
Hope she can make it, you got it baby goat c’mon ❤
Hope that she makes it. She might just need a little extea care
He is just kidding
Id have no patience too after a 150,000 word manuscript
Oh my gosh! Yes! I struggle with that to! I can write and write but when it actually has to look pretty I freeze up and can’t think of anything. I can world build and make awesome characters, but when it actually comes down to making a story out of it I can figure out where to start
10/10 cat
cute :] whats the song ?
I would die for her.
She’s so cute and fat!
Adorababble!
