Calvary Baptist Church is a community of Jesus followers. We are not perfect and we don't expect you to be either. Our teaching is biblical. Our attitude is friendly. Our ministries are improving. Our faith is growing. But, if there is only one thing you remember about us we hope it is that Calvary Baptist Church is all about Jesus.

Can the outward obedience of a person look like Legalism 2? It certainly could. You mentioned head coverings, so let me use it as an example. If I see a woman wearing a head covering and assume she is guilty of legalism, the irony is that I am the legalist. I must learn not to think people are legalistic on the basis of outward appearance. However, if she is assuming all other women who are not wearing head coverings are disobedient to God, then she is a legalist. The reason is simple. Legalism 2 is a matter of the heart. I can't know if you are guilty of legalism 2 by observation. I can only discern a person is guilty of legalism 2 if they express it through their words. Legalism 2 is a self-righteous attitude that could be inside the heart of a person on either side of an issue. Legalism comes natural to religious people, and that's why we must identify it in ourselves and root it out of ourselves first. Consider Jesus’ words in Matthew 7, “take the log out of your own eye” first. These words are for all of us. I hope this beginning of an answer helps
I have questions about legalism-2: There is a solid line between legalism and obedience - granted. But couldn't the manifestation of that delineation (in a person's behavior) look like legalism-2? In other words, if someone is doing all they can to be obedient to God, aren't those fruits going to be noticed (Matthew 7.16-23)? And if the "watch me live" mentality is to hold up, aren't we suggesting that there IS a line-to-gain somewhere that we're looking at (albeit at a personal level)? And if there is such a line-to-gain, doesn't drawing this line, or approaching it, or even suggesting that it exists, sometimes look like legalism-2? And if it does, shouldn't we be very careful condemning others under this categorization? (This last part of the question, I think you covered well) It's clear that as Christians, we will have different convictions about different (non-creed-level) things (like head coverings, etc.). But somewhere between "Creed Level" and "Head Coverings Level", there are certain things which must occur for us to be obedient servants bearing good fruit (Romans 12.2). Are we painting this area as legalism-2 if we're not careful? Or have I just completely misunderstood legalism-2? Thanks fellas.
It's the heart motive. Two people could do the exact same thing, one does it legalistically and the other out of a desire to be obedient. I think that is an invisible line to everyone but God.

@@aaronirlbacher I understand the aspect of it being a condition of the heart/intent of each person. I guess what I'm getting at is that I take Philippians 4:8 very seriously and I've noticed that this seems to be in direct opposition to the thing called "Christian Liberty"; which seems to be used, often, to stray away from Philippians 4:8. Of course, this leaves us to decide what fits into the categories of purity and "good report" - each for ourselves, under our own personal convictions (?). At this point, I think you've answered my question, but I'm just walking it out. If it's all about a heart issue (known truly, only, by God), we certainly have an uphill battle against the desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9) heart - a battle bearable only by the promise in Galatians 4:6. I hope I'm referencing these verses with the proper context.
