    after watching some other videos on youtube concerning import lathes like yours, i ordered the same brand you have and have already worked out what i'm going to be upgrading once it gets here. So far the Vevor lathes have been showing better cutting finishes than others which is why i went that route particularly because they come with better spindle bearings than most. However, one thing i read about these belt driven ones is that the belts they come with are trash. So I recommend you buy (or try to find) better ones than what it came with. I will be inspecting the size of mine when it arrives and ordering better ones accordingly. I may even turn some pulleys and build a small cnc dremel mill for toothed pulleys and belts.

    It appears by the color of the metal that the compound on yours may be cast iron? If so, you are fortunate. I received one that was extruded aluminum (not machined at all, just assembled as extruded), so it is entirely useless for the type of turning I was planning (mostly steel). They also used cardboard to shim my headstock to the ways. For the cost, I expected that corners were cut. I was somewhat surprised at how much cast iron was actually present (all of the major parts excluding the compound riser, compound, and tailstock). There also is so much backlash everywhere in mine that I am doing a full rebuild before actually running it.

      Hey friend ... how did the re calibrating everything go? Were you able to get tolerances where you liked them. Was it worth it? I'm new to all this and trying to research options need to make cues lathe ... why would his be made of different material than the one you received??

    • @r2db
      @r2db 7 місяців тому

      @@hobonickel840 If you are looking for something that is reasonably ready-to-use out of the box, expect to spend a lot more. For example the "LittleMachineShop" machines would be expected to not need a lot of work after mounting and cleaning. As it turned out, I purchased a second Vevor lathe of slightly different specs essentially for parts. It came with a proper cast iron compound, which was swapped to the first lathe, and it also has a gearbox to reverse threading (the main reason I picked that one). In the end, the first machine is now part-way through a CNC conversion. The second is waiting for my CNC router to be operational in order to machine my own replacement compound. All of the different models are slightly different, and the less expensive ones are always a bit of a gamble. Our neighbor had purchased a 7x12 and could never turn anything on it. I purchased a 7x14 before purchasing the Vevor lathe, and I have turned steel up to 3 inches in diameter without any severe issues (meaning take the cuts lightly) with the stock motor. If you go with a cheaper lathe, expect to need to put in a lot of sweat equity, but you could be surprised and with some adjustment be rapidly making chips and precision parts.

    • @hobonickel840
      @hobonickel840 7 місяців тому

      @@r2db there's no sending it back if it will not turn anything? Or are you just saying he has to give it a hard adjustment... Thanks for taking the time. So what models are you referring to when say expensive vs inexpensive? Is there a price threshold and even then features make all seem kind of inexpensive compared .. I wouldn't know quite yet. What site did you use? If you don't mind .. and thanks again

    • @r2db
      @r2db 7 місяців тому

      @@hobonickel840 "Sending it back" is a rather expensive process for a lathe of any reasonable size. My neighbor did take his back, but that was to a local shop. Search for the brand I put in quotes. Those will be the best of the mini-lathe/ mini-mill machines that you are going to find. As for Vevor, they do make pretty decent things for the price. One just needs to understand that one does not get a ~9"x40" lathe (or 8.7"x36" I believe was the specification for mine) for $1,000 and expect that it is going to turn accurate to tenths right out of the crate.

    My HF Chinese bandsaw pulley had key dislodge and only a half or less of the pulley ID contacts the motor shaft, so it slid and munched both the pulley ID and the shaft OD, just as yours was wobbling there. SMP Rotary said these mini lathes have the comparative stiffness and torsional resistance of a string of spaghetti (he has a Maho). I want to anchor mine to a granite/epoxy or concrete block... Commenting helps the algorithm immensely....
