WBCS (Jack) / WLNG July 2005
I was driving around home (Central New Jersey) on a steamy Summer evening in July of 2005 when the radio seemed to be ripping in terms of far away stations thanks to Tropospheric Enhancement so I made the trek down the shore to the boardwalk at Belmar, NJ in hopes of airchecking WLNG 92.1 on Long Island a mere 105 miles as the crow flies across the ocean.
First and foremost though I got a break from the "new" Jack-FM at 101.1 in New York which replaced the stale 50's and 60's oldies of WCBS FM that played for decades. The format "playing what we want" worked in markets like Baltimore, Toronto and California and was jockless with countless sweepers by Howie Kogan between the songs. Eventually the "leisure village" crowd was so outraged only two years later they dropped the Jack and brought back CBS FM but as a "classic hits" format. Eventually the 50's and 60's were phased out also so my question is where's the outrage now?
Anyway, I flipped to 92.1 and you can hear I was trying to fine tune it on the dial as Chuck Mackin' was crackin' (using a Rusty Potzism). I was able to get this short clip before the signal faded, the trop shifted and WVLT Cruisin' 92.1 in Vineland started to take over the frequency.

WKXW Big Joe Henry 2/5/1999

With its talk format during the week and oldies on weekends WKXW thrived on being New Jersey's station interjecting every 10 with weather and 15 with traffic reports under signature music beds that when you hear probably pours back memories of being all over the Garden State (well at least for me who grew up in the 90's). I consider the late 1990's the prime of New Jersey 101.5 as they had an a...

Central NJ Railroad Radio 6/15/2000

Living in Edison, NJ the railroad radio was usually a flurry of activity. Thursday June 15, 2000 was no exception when I plugged my Radio Shack PRO-25 into a tape deck and began recording between 10am and noon. I had not listened to this tape until digitalizing and scoping out the dead air. You'll hear the Morristown & Erie, Conrail North Jersey, NYS&W, NJT Hoboken and Newark Division dispatche...

A radio station and jock I can't say enough about I consider this my "holy grail" of radio airchecks. When I was first introduced to WLNG 92.1 FM it was in the early 2000's by a friend and when before he played an aircheck from the 1980's his exact disclaimer was, "now what your about to hear is real". After hearing it for the first time I was enthralled and we took a trip not much longer after...

After watching a handful of artistic flare videos in the past I decided to add some of my own filming NS 11Z passing through Nescopeck, PA along the Sunbury Line on March 23, 2023. Nothing special I filmed this with my iphone 8S and utilized some of the statues that the Chapin Oil Services has around their property such as a Native American and an eagle.

Reading Heritage on 23M

The Reading heritage unit is a stones throw from home rails as it trudges westbound with 23M through a foggy morning in the Lehigh Valley. He's on former LV rails and to the right of the Bethlehem Station was where the Reading Company's North Penn Branch tied in and crossed on a diamond to access the Allentown Terminal. By the time he hits Burn just a few miles to the west he'll be back on the ...

On Sunday January 3rd, 2021 evening Dover Drill YD-43 was called to grab a "book end" set consisting of a GP40PH-2B 4214, five Comet V coaches and a PL42AC in Port Morris then take to Dover where the 4214 would get swapped out for a regular Comet V cab car. I caught up with the move after departing Port Morris Yard at Lake Hopatcong station, then luckily again arriving at Dover since they got h...

While on an outing to the Rocky Mount area a visit was paid to Selma, NC for the nightly southbound passages of Amtrak trains 97 and 53. This was the first I used my Nikon D5500 for video work. Train 97 was behind the eight ball with 53 ahead of schedule pushing hi...
Modifying an HO Dwarf Signal

I decided to start doing a few model railroad signaling how to videos starting off with a simple project of modifying an HO scale Tomar double head dwarf with the RR-Cirkits Tri-color LED's. If you're a prototype modeler these LED's are super bright and have the proper "railroad green" with that blueish tint when looking from a distance. A list of what I used: Tomar Signals: tomarindustries.com...
Lehigh Line 1/27/2001

There was wintry weather to start off the cold Saturday morning but it didn't stop me making the 16 mile bicycle ride from Edison to Manville for the Lehigh Line's activity. As the day went on the weather slightly improved with the snow stopping but that strong northwest wind came in to keep the area chill. Traffic wise it was good as you'll see such forgotten trains as the RoadRailer and acid ...

This was taken back when f40s and geeps ruled the raritan valley line. Now alp-46/as, alp-45s and alp-45as rule the line in 2024.

1:22, funny how that engine is still on NJT’s roster to this day. Also, funny how the other F40s are retired, but this one.

Something I never got to see by the time I was really able to explore the vast NJT network. Really wish I could have. Something I kind of can't fathom but maybe I really shouldn't. Why did NJT favor its GP40PH fleet over the F40PH fleet. Just seemed like the F40's were more up to the job with their improved HEP systems but I guess the GP40s were more versatile. Also great recording of Townley's older defect detector and cab car 5157 gives intense Budd Silverliner vibes.

5:47 I started riding the trains on my own when I was about 14 (which would have been a year before this), and somehow I’ve always remembered that the first time I got on one by myself, I sat in car 5159. I would always notice it when I saw it on the line after that, and it was cool to spot it here, too.

They were actually old Arrow I’s with the powertrains removed and the center doors blanked out, which is why they look more like the Arrow/Silverliner family than they do the other Comets. Funny thing is the IB’s that later saw service with Amtrak California got sort of a Comet tribute livery with a dark beltline around the windows in addition to the disco stripes by the doors, and they just call them Comets. Not to be confused with the actual Comets Amtrak runs in the Midwest (aka Horizons).

When trains and things were better...if I could go back in time.. ..when there was more diversity of rolling stock, more wonder, when NJ Transit was a nation-leading transit agency.. ..I will never not be mesmerized by the mail cars on an Amtrak long-distance train as well as those Horizon lounge cars which should have never been taken away from Amtrak's northeastern long-distance routes...would have worked perfectly on the Cardinal today with its unique half diner/half lounge operation..

I liked each of the times they'd mix a GP40PH-2/B or GP40FH-2 into the rotation of mostly F40PH-2/CAT's. Got rather repetitive from the standpoint of someone who's been there. If you watch that summer 2000 video by Jersey Mike of the RVL cab ride, every single engine that appears on the RVL is an F40. You can even hear radio chatter about a Coast Line train with an F, the other line they dominated before the Bay Head fuel tank was removed.
