Would you get the HD or the SE ?
HD
Tell me this cat couldn’t had gotten him self some huge mailbox money from sillycones valley for a 10 episode build on this all around best splitter known to man. My guess is it actually moves under same power plant as well. Now how fast I would venture to say 5mph at tops. But again no need to move silly fast to the area where the big rounds wait.
Yes, it drives under its own power. 5 mph is about right.
The build is documented on a forum. arboristsite.com.
Beast
How many cord an hour are you getting out the them?
As much as a cord per hour per person working hard. A two person team can crank out some wood. They will be exhausted when done.
@@samtip442 thanks for the response.

Hey Doug I’m working on this now I don’t need to have any tensioner just the electric motor with pulley to belt to other pulley on shaft?
Doug, Is that a 3 phase 5HP planer? Did you buy the 5HP goHz model, or double up to the 10HP. Alot of these VFDs (like Hitachi) say you need to upgrade to 2x the HP if running single phase into the VFD. Also, Has the VFD tripped out when taking deeper cuts? Thanks
Yes it is the 5 hp vfd version goHz on 5 hp motor. Just takes a slower start up. I have had it stall when taking to much of a cut. 1/2" cut is to much by mistake. Still running.
I'm in the works of putting a gas motor on my kewanee 500. I'm thinking of going with a belt that way if there is a jam the belt may slip saving some parts. Do you think a 6hp will be enough with a bigger gear to slow it down?
More than enough motor. I am currently using 1.5 hp electric with belt for the same reason. Not to break more chains or paddles.
@@samtip442 what size pulley you running now
@@stevebillow395 I think 1" to 14 inch. Slowed it down so I did not break things. I have a 17 sec video of it. Electric motor on Kewanee. The video is a 3 or 4 inch on the motor. Now is 1 inch. Edit ua-cam.com/video/zHQFHnmavcg/v-deo.htmlsi=pXXRaFJYlWfQklEp
What stroke length?
30 or 32 inches. One of those. Got the cylinder on Craigslist.
I would never trust someone else running a machine with my hands near it.dumb.
Does the SE outperform the HD model? Is the SE worth the extra $?
The SE will out split the HD on tuff to split wood. For wood which will not split nice it will cut/sheer off the chunk. I don't know the current prices but SE does have the extra grunt to get the job done. Where the HD will bounce off the hard to split wood. These would be the pieces you send to the hydraulic splitter. Takes to much time to mess with the hard to split pieces.
Are you suggesting that if I still want to hand split but require a machine splitter for the hard to split pieces (stringy, knots, or crotchy) that a hydraulic splitter is a better option?
Best 💪💪💪💪💪
I commend them for doing charity work, but can't say much about their safety record. It clearly states in the Supersplit owner's manual, loading the logs & operating the ram is a one man operation. If you want a helper, just have them pick up the splits off the ground. My favorite part is when the guy on the right, sticks his finger wherer the ram would hit. Like they say in the oilfield, don't stick your fingers, where you wouldn't stick your d *&k
Has dude lost a finger yet?
Working too fast, hand always in danger zone... smh
I was cringing every time he pulled the lever. He almost lost fingers many times. You put your hand on top or on the side, never on the ends!
AWESOME VIDEO !
Hi Doug im very interested in your thoughts on the pros and cons between the d and l and the timberking??? I have a tree service and have slabbed a few logs with the Alaskan mill the last couple years and I’m looking to upgrade. Probably mostly going to sell slabs and make some dimensional lumber for myself.
The timberking does make great cut on the mark you choose. Hard part is manually turning the larger logs. It will kill two people turning a 30 inch x 6ft swamp white oak log. D&L no turning of the log. D&L is great for slabbing logs. Plus you can plain sand and use the swing blade. The swing lade is not as precise as the timberking. The saw blade and head tend to wander if you try to take to much of a cut. With practice it will make some nice cuts. For dimensional the Timberking. For slabs, plaining and ruff blocking the D&L. All my logs come from a tree service. So you will hit plenty of metal in the logs.
I'm impressed.
👍👍👍
Hey do you still own the D&L?
Yes I do
@@samtip442 do you have any pros/cons you could share since you've owned it? I'm think about it but have my scepticism of course. Just trying to make the right choice. I was going to get the ultra wide with a slabber and planer blade.
@@MaryJane-hi7tu Pros Plenty of power for slabbing a log. With a well ground chain matched chain produces great slabs. Each cutter must be the same length or you will get grooves. Out of the box chains are not consistent. The cutters are not within 0.005 inches in length of each other. It is heavy. I use a load to move it around. You will need some help to move the mill and the slabs. Even with a big motor the swing blade is under powered. You need to make small cut. You will not make a 10 inch cut in oak. Cotton wood sure. The insert blade is worth it. I hit lots of metal and back up and running in minutes.
your a goddamn idiot letting those kids work around that open gear and belts ,one false move and they would be crippled for life. Plain stupidity buy a bunch of adults who should know better --obviously Not !!!!!!!
I know you've since put an electric motor on this elevator, but if the de-coupler clutch on the lower LH pulley (5 bolts with springs under the heads) had been working properly, you'd have never had an issue. Mine didn't work the first time I had a jam. It bent a crossbar and some links before it broke free... it has worked flawlessly since... Nice build. Mine is still PTO driven, but is getting a gas motor next week - and it will run considerably slower than yours, as it does on PTO power.
Here you can see the final speed with electric motor. ua-cam.com/video/JMD27XQESiA/v-deo.html
Much better!! Great work!

Im curious to know if you are satisfied with your mill did you wish you bought something eslse and is there something you dont like on this unit thanks, currently shopping for slabber not sure if im going whith turbo worrier full slabber or the lucas
Got it for slabbing and it does that just fine. The log dogs are ok but a log with notch will do just as well if not better. I did change some of the lock handles. Needed a stronger handle to keep the mill set. I think it is easier to run than my Timberking 1200. No turning of the log.
@@samtip442 thanks for your review all the best!
That's really tough wood to split for any splitter! I'm thinking about buying the SuperSplit "SE" model over the "HD" any thoughts ? I will be splitting Oak, Ash, Elm and other hardwoods. My other choice would be something hydraulic.
With Ash and elm the SE has just a little more strentgh to get the job done quicker. The hd will do it but takes more hits.
That's a great setup. Could you tell me the benefits of a regeneration valve?
Faster to extend the cylinder until a desired load is sensed. When the cylinder is extending it diverts the oil coming out of the cylinder return line to the inlet port. But when it senses pressure build up it goes back to normal speed and power.
@@samtip442 Recently acquired a log splitter which seems to have a similar setup; but instead has a spring on the return. Yet the two speeds are as you described it. Goes fast until it touches the wood and then switches to the slower speed to split the wood. (Thanks for the video; it helped clear things up.)
That’s pretty cool. What do all those levers do? I can’t say I’ve ever seen that many on even the high end commercial splitters.
Two for auto cycle valve. Two buttons for hydraulic winch in and out. Jack raise lower, boom lift, raise lower 4 way raise lower and drive forward reverse. Wheel for driving
@@samtip442 wow I didn’t know it had all those features. That’s cool. I’m running a far simpler splitter but I hope to in the near future own an Eastonmade 22-28 with a 4,6,8,12 way wedge
Is the winch electric or hydraulic?
Hydraulic. I have two hydraulic pumps stacked together.
Nice. Firewood or milling?
Tried milling into slabs but hit to much metal so the rest was firewood.
Server power supply or running off 5V at sub 50% brightness or a normal 12V at well under 50% brightness? I run about 1500 from 1 5V at 100% brightness. Lots of ambient light here.
One meanwell SE1000-12 1000 watt power supply 12v at 10% brightness. Falcon F48 controller with 2 remotes. 400 pixels per output. This was 2019. 2020 this was 4800 pixels with one SE-1500-12 power supply.
Nice. Someone else who is into firewood and Chrissy lights.

No. Heat for my house.
No way!? It would have been worth thousands if you had slabbed it up. Call me next time.

Hi Doug, can you tell me what VFD you are using, just picked up a 1966 Powermatic 180 and am looking to convert to single phase 220
gohz.com 5 hp VFD, 1 phase to 3 phase VFD
@@samtip442 Hi Doug, thanks for the link I just ordered the same VFD, I was wondering if you have a link to the video you used to program the VFD too. Also, did you tie the VFD directly to the motor and bypass the reset box and on/off switches that are on the machine. Thanks again for the help, Luke
@@lukewendler2109 I think this is it. ua-cam.com/video/c8RTGU7Cjew/v-deo.html
@@lukewendler2109 Yes now the VFD is the on off.
From a single operator milling with a swing blade, I have seem people do the backwards vertical first than do a forward horizontal cut. This will place the operator right beside the finished board for easy removal. Looks like this operator is getting extra exercise running around the carriage twice for each board.
Great video!
Doug is it primarily stationary or do you move it around to other sites as well? If so, how long does it take to get up and sawing? Thanks.
Mostly stationary but I have taken it on the road a few times. Takes about an hour to setup and level around a big log. About 1/2 hour to take down an sit the track on a wide pallet.
Seems to be a really good swing mill - however - much too wide for the work shown. Half the width between roller tracts would / should be good for nearly ALL normally sized diameters of logs. A narrower 'cutting zone' would specifically allow the operator to push / pull the head while safely walking *outside* of the cutting channel --- especially if the log were displaced closer to the left (as shown) roller rail. A link to the mfgr. would have been a good idea.
Normally sized diameters of logs is entirely dependent on where you live. If on the west coast of North America. Normally sized logs might range from 36" to 60" in diameter. It better to have the extra capacity for the times that those monster sized logs come along.
MY problem? Don't have a Bobcat to begin with, LOL
get those kids some gloves and stop yelling at them
Toolcat +1 points on impressive lift capacity. Dump trailer -10 points on being blasted from a high drop tree round. Seeing the side bed now in against hurt man.
Unlike most UA-camr's that seem to go out of their way to handle wood as much as possible....ahahhahaaaa
How long is the long?
Log was about 10 ft long
I’m getting ready to purchase one of the machines but am on the fence about getting the HD or the SE. what advise can you give me about the two. Please be as honest as possible. Thank you for assisting me so I can make a wise decision.
The HD will do about anything. Just have to hit it more times. The SE is a lot more $. My second SE I ordered without a motor and without a table. Got the motor cheaper on Ebay and built my own bigger table. I have already sold all of them. My favorite is the SE.
How long have you been using the two units? Have you had issues with either? Thanks
Only issue is keeping the beam clean so the ram will return freely. Gets sticky in cold weather.
Why did you choose the SE vs the HD? I’m asking because I’m on the fence as to which one to get. Thanks
I have had both SE and HD. Also use the regular super split. The SE just has more grunt to split the dried elms, ash and pecans. Anything stringy. SE is not needed for oaks. The SE will slice through the wood instead of split the wood. It has that much more power and weight behind it.
@@samtip442 your reply was interesting and informative. Here’s another question: you owned the two top units and used the initial offering of their’s. Have you thought about a hydraulic splitter in addition to or rather than? Please explain. Thanks
@@rottiejakeluke Yes I have several other hydraulic splitters. My most used is a Haln skid steer processor. Best part is the Hydraulic Chainsaw. Keeps the wood the same length and quiet. I have two TM upside down splitters and a custom built diesel splitter. A golf course fairway mower converted into a log splitter. Stopped using the super split because it takes several people to take advantage of the speed. I am 54 and slowing down. Hydro is more my pace now. Or just sit in the skidsteer. But I have made the hydros faster with regeneration tech.
@@samtip442 thanks for replying. Are you interested in selling the SE or HD SS? Where are you located? Thanks
Hey Doug, Curious if this VFD is still working out for you? And did you mount it directly to the planer? Or a different location, like on a wall? Thanks in advance! (I as well have a 3 phase planer I'm working on getting up and running)
I just have it with pig tails with twist lock plugs. Roll the cord up when done for storage. VFD still works great.
Doug, was that the 3120 I played with at Matt's in MO, when you brought your home-built splitter out? This is Locust by the way...
If it was a 3120 then yes it is the same saw.
@@samtip442 I wondered. Looks like you found a great candidate for it!
@@TheWayfaringMan The trunk and few piece were a 24000 lb trailer load. The weights were from the crane scale meter.
@@samtip442 Are you going to throw the trunk on that new mill?
@@TheWayfaringMan Did not have a mill back in 2017. It became firewood.
Hi Doug, are you happy with your D&L mill? I'm about to pull the trigger on one
Yes happy. It does what I wanted it to do. Make slabs. Still learning the swing blade. Planer is great to finish the slabs. Swing blade is just a lot of work by your self. Lots of pushing and walking to remove then wood then stack the cut wood. Then back to pushing and pulling then repeat. Helper to help move the wood is recommended.
@@samtip442 thanks for the reply, I've sent the down payment. Now I just anxiously await the arrival.
