    Great actress...to be pedantic..born in Lexington, Kentucky and living there as a child, couldn't we expect a little Southern accent. She was an academic and spoke fluent French so maybe the drawl could have been extinguished somewhat.

    • @Nyx773
      @Nyx773 5 місяців тому

      I occasionally heard a southern drawl. I vaguely recall reading that the accents/dialects were different before the civil war than what they were after reconstruction. Especially with wealthy people.

      @@Nyx773 Very interesting, because when they try to replicate Lincoln's accent there never seems to be much of southern touch, he was dirt poor of course. Gone with the Wind, the movie, obviously flies in the face of this. PS I am not even American but can differentiate some different accents from the South, I have TN pretty much down pat.

    43:23 MTL wrote extensively about her health, to the point of probably being a hypochondriac (and Robert showed signs of this too). All the Chicago newspapers printed the medical testimonies of the doctors at MTL’s insanity trial. There is zero evidence that her insanity was caused by medications. MTL did try to commit suicide. At Bellevue Place, the 4 months of Daily Progress Reports still exist and they were published In the 1970s. There was zero mention of medications in those reports (no signs of giving medications or having withdrawal symptoms)

  • @Nyx773

    27:40 When writing non-fiction, It is necessary to go to the original sources/archives (letters, newspaper articles, government documents, etc.). Never trust other books as a primary source. Too often, the citation/quote is not accurate: it is taken it out of context, cherry picked, phrases cut in half just to make the author’s point. This phenomenon is extremely prevalent with civil war history and especially the history of the Lincolns. 29:37 It is false that RTL bribed the judge and jury in MTL’s trial so that he could steal her money. Jean Baker completely made that up. 31:03 There is zero evidence that MTL was Lincoln’s closest advisor. She was not a co-president. W. A. Evans is one of the best biographers of MTL, but he did a poor job stating his sources.

    26:36 When Robert went off to Harvard, he sent a bunch of pictures of himself to a girl in Springfield, telling her to share them with a bunch of other girls in town. 27:06 Before his father’s murder, Robert “was hilarious”. He loved to tell jokes, He told stories just as well as his father did. After the assassination, only his very closest friends continued to see that side of him.

    It is interesting that biographers downplay the author of scripture when Lincoln quotes it. "A house divided against itself cannot stand". Matthew 12:25, Mark 3:25. I would say that the author of scripture was the planter of the idea and to attribute it to Lincoln is to make him a plagiarist.

    Good stuff here to be sure, but I have one minor complaint. Why do we keep seeing an actor portraying a bearded Lincoln when we're learning about events of 1850? Mr. Lincoln didn't grow his whiskers, as Grace Bedell called them, until late 1860.

  • @lookedgood8466
    @lookedgood8466 Рік тому

    Very enlightening. I'm surprised that this is the first comment. In 1838 Lincoln gave a speech which included the following:- "At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide." I've been listening to an audio book titled "The Next Civil War: Dispatches from the American Future by Stephen Marche", which I have so far found quite interesting.

    When I was a kid back in the 70's, my family and I stayed in Lincoln's Cottage when we went to DC to visit my grandfather who lived in the "old soldier's home." All I remember about it are things a kid might remember: it was nice and cool (in the summer heat); it had thick walls (my memory exaggerates, but the interior walls were nearly a foot thick :); there were cannons out front where we used to climb on. At the same time we stayed there, a kind woman who was also staying there while she visited her father in the soldier's home gave my brother and me little bronze figurines of the Lincoln memorial and Jefferson memorial. Sounds like people don't stay over night there any more (while visiting retired soldier's). I consider myself fortunate to have this memory and glad to see the cottage being looked after today.

We discovered later that we probably should have prefaced the program with an explanation of how I was going to present the questions because many people… like yourself… thought I was being intentionally rude but I promise you I was only playing ‘the part’ as intended.
