Rocky Broad Solar
United States
Приєднався 27 жов 2023
The idea of Rocky Broad Solar developed as I was living along the banks of the Rocky Broad River in the mountains of western North Carolina. The end goal is to take the many years of industry knowledge and use it to empower others to make the change to clean, renewable energy in a way that provides security and self sufficiency to homeowners. It is time to take the power back into our hands, and make the current flow.

Great video...I am impressed by the EG4 lineup...when will you post part 2....
I have been having trouble sourcing the wire gutter and electrical supplies with the holidays, but hope to start making some more progress over the next couple weekends. Thanks for watching the channel!
If I’m building a modern house off grid, would I need the Grid Boss to go with the Flex Boss? It sounds like there is still a benefit
If it is completely off grid, then no, it would not provide as much value, but you could still use it for the smart ports or if you were planning on paralleling multiple inverters. Thanks for watching!
Hey, Great video! I am in the process of installing my GB/FB/Batt combo. I heard you mention needing 15 inches of clearance for the FB. My literature states 5.9" clearance. My plan is to mount the FB panel about 6 inches from the GB. Can you expound/clarify on the clearances needed? Not trying to be the "gotcha guy" I just don't want to have a min distance violation in my install. Thanks
Hi George, I am working of the "EG4 FlexBOSS21 User Manual 1.0" and it states 15.8" needed on every side of the inverter and above it on page 12 which did seem excessive to me. What manual are you working off of?
Well, it appears that there is a different manual on the website now that shows the 5.9" clearance only needed on the sides on page 16. That is very frustrating, because I originally mounted it that way and had to move all of my equipment around in order to get the 15.8" called out in version 1.0.
@@RockyBroadSolarLLC I just went to the Sig Solar website and checked it out as well. I noted that they are now selling the FB version 1.1. I'm not sure what the changes are, so I'm going to call later today to see what version of the manual I should be using with my one-month-old equipment. I am guessing that V 1.1 includes the LCD screen.
FYI- Sig Solar Tech support confirmed that the LCD is included with V1.1 and that is the only technical change. They also changed the color of the case for V1.1. The website states that if you ordered your FB early, you can call sales and they will send out an LCD screen kit at no cost.
We have installed many of both on off grid jobs, the EG4 has better surge capacity. The peak out puts are not as good on the sol-ark this has been tested by us over and over. Missed advatages: EG4 higher PV VOC input is huge from a design and adaptability stand point. EG4 has build in rapid shutdown transmitter's EG4 has plug and play CTs
Great insight Keith. I appreciate the feedback and for you watching the channel!
Gotta love the NEC!
Yes sir. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, and at what cost??
That is yet to be determined. Once I finish the entire installation I plan on doing a system cost breakdown video. One thing is for sure. It ain't cheap. Thanks for watching!
Didn't hear mention of max voltage of MPPT's. Got the 13 and 26 amps. Also you may want to look into split cell panels especially the 144 split cell. They have made optimizer and Micro inverters obsolete for the purpose of shade mitigation.
Great feedback. I will look further into those split cell panels. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I don't think the numbers on max usable PV for the Sol Ark 15K are correct. I regularly hit 17.9 kW with 15-16 kW going out to the grid and the balance being used to charge the battery. Happy to share more if helpful.
Thank you for the feedback Tobias. I am really just going by the datasheets available and I don't personally have first hand experience with this inverter. Please do share more if I am missing something or incorrect. Thanks for watching the channel.
@RockyBroadSolarLLC Thanks for the quick reply. From where are you getting the max usable PV number? I believe it should be the same as the max PV allowed. There 3 MPP trackers 6500 watts each which equals 19500 watts. That is also consistent with my observations during real use. Hope that helps.
I am in the middle of an install as well and noticed in the new battery manual it said to charge batteries to 100% before connecting them in parallel. I am wondering how you went about doing this. Nice video thank you for sharing.
I have not yet gotten to that point but I plan on following the installation manual instructions to the T. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching!
I just bought these on Black Friday as well. Almost same setup. I am still waiting on utility company to bless the permits.
Keep me posted on your journey. Thanks for watching!
@Jamesshowalter... Can the grid boss be parallel?
To my knowledge you cannot parallel Gridbosses. They are meant to backup up to a 200A service and you can parallel multiple inverters in the Gridboss
Good stuff. I'm doing a Gridboss install on my system right now but I'm hooking it into 2-EG4 18kPVs and 3-EG4 PowerPro batteries.
I am hoping to get an additional battery in the future as well. Good luck on the system and thanks for watching the channel!
thank you
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!

Looks like I need tighten the belt!
I can remember seeing you on UA-cam testing mpp inverters pushing them to the limit you have done incredible well keep it up
Thanks for watching the channel!
This is what Ive been looking for... We are building on an island and are looking at this exact same setup plus roof solar and carport solar. Maybe 3 arrays. Cant wait to see wiring and integration. We are building 2100 sqft.
Good luck with the project and thanks for watching the channel!
The generator I have is an older 6500watt onan. That I took out of my old motorhome that I lived in next to my house as I built it. Before I gave it away. How would I know if it's a dirty generator.
Unless it is an "inverter type" generator then it is almost definitely dirty power. If you can find a datasheet on it, you should be able to find the Total Harmonic Distortion. The GridBoss manual states to keep THD under 3%, but in general, anything over 5% is considered dirty. Thanks for watching!
For those of us that live above 2000m, are there any options? I understand that the cooling capacity of the thin air is less but it's also consistently cool up here and I would be installing in a cool basement.
The Tesla Powerwall 3 can go up to 3000 meters. Thanks for watching.
Nice! Looking forward to the next part!
Me too! Thanks for watching!
I definitely enjoyed the interview! Seems like eg4 has some great stuff.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for responding to all my questions. With the information I was looking for.
You're welcome! Glad I could help.
Thank you James for doing this. I just self built my house. And will be self installing the solar equipment that I have purchased from signature solar. So that I can possibly retire in 3 or 4 years. Without worrying about any utility bills.
Thanks for watching, and congrats on the new home!
I'm going to add 2 18ks and 6 eg4 indoor wall batteries. That I recently purchased from signature solar. On to an existing 10,080 watt pv only grid tied system. Would the grid boss simplify this installation.?
Yes the GridBoss would simplify the installation. Each inverter could land inside the GridBoss with a breaker connection and you would not need separate combiner panels and bypass switches. This would also give you that smart load functionality. Thanks for watching the channel.
As far as the generator goes why don't you just use it to charge the batteries. And have the house power from the batteries only? Or batteries and solar when it's available.?
That would be the setup if you connected the generator directly to the batteries using the EG4 Chargeverter.
Great video, sir! Looking forward to the next one!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
What is the space requirement between the batteries?
7 inches. Thanks for watching!
Nice job so far, man! It's looking great.
I appreciate the encouragement. Thanks for watching!
Most utilities will not allow you to put something between the meter socket and the meter
Agreed. More and more utilities are approving the use of the Backup Switch. You can find the list on Tesla's website. That being said it is up to the utility you fall under. If they don't allow it then you will have to use the Backup Gateway. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate a man who can do what you have to set things straight. I've purchased the EG4, which will arrive tomorrow and based on what you brought to my attention I will stay with it. Thanks for the video.
Glad you found the video helpful and thanks for watching!

Just a note, and I'm sure nearly everyone is aware of this, the EG4 is a re-branded LuxPower unit. LuxPower has been around almost as long as Sol-Ark, so any worries about company viability are really negated. I think most people will be very happy with either model. Both are very good products with great support.
Agreed. Thanks for watching the channel.
Luxpower just recently started to make a Hybrid inverter. They are just learning and it shows by the constant software updates to fix never ending bugs.
Deye which manufactures SolArk started making inverters in 2007 and actually opened its business in 2000.By the time SolARK started business Deye had a well established name for manufacturing high quality inverters which is why SolArk started buying from them.
I like pictures, especially when it comes to complicated things, well done on being a standout explainer of this topic!
Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching the channel.
So if you live at 1mi high Elevation the battery will cool itself less effectively in borderline installations like poor airflow in sun?
It's a good thing they combined a heat dissipating inverter into the battery design.
Absolutely.
I am not sure I follow?
I like how Tesla combined the most unreliable string inverter with their battery. When either dies in 5-7 years you can replace both very conveniently. They really do think ahead, especially the convenience of customers.
It comes with a 10 year warranty, so if it dies in 5-7 years then they are going to have to pay the bill. I have not heard anything about their string inverters being unreliable as long as they are designed and installed per string inverter guidelines. Maybe you know something that I don't though. Thanks for watching the channel.
Good video, just a quick question. If I want to connect a single microinverter pv system to power a subpanel with 50A main breaker, could I used an oversized solar DP breaker? The microinverter is rated for 1000W output at 4.4A. So I'm not sure what the closest size is for a double pole breaker. Could a 10A or 15A DP breaker be used in the subpanel to backfeed?
Hello @gunhawrtis, yes you could back feed a single microinverter using a 2 pole 15 amp breaker with 14 gauge wire. This would also give you the ability to add more in the future. Thanks for watching!
@RockyBroadSolarLLC thank you sir. I like your videos, keep up the good work 👍
Hello, rumor is Tesla Powerwall 3 is postponed to ship until next year. Can you confirm? Inverter issues?
Hello, I have not heard of any issues other than heavy demand that is outpacing supplies. It is one of the top mainstream batteries on the market at a pretty competitive price, as well as the brand recognition that everyone trusts. We are still installing them at the moment but it sounds like the industry is struggling to source enough of them to keep pace with sales.
Just received my PW3, mounted today! Should be online this week.
Why would anybody consider fossil fuel generator that you have to test Weekley to make sure it works. A solar system is online continuously therefore it’s a continuous test and it will operate when the grid goes down. It is extremely reliable and the energy is free and very little maintenance. Internal combustion is a maintenance nightmare.
I don't disagree. Thanks for watching the channel.
What size breaker and wire
15A breaker and 12/2 Romex will easily power all of the cameras, lights, and doorbell transformer. Thanks for watching!
So sad to see all this destroyed. Nature is a very strong force. All the best to you and all others living through this. God Bless.
Agreed. Thank you for watching.
I really enjoy learning about the different smart panels on the market. Great job explaining!
Glad it was helpful!

The help has been amazing. Thanks for watching.
Not bad for a few old men.
You're darn right it's not.
I have an enphase system that has 56 445 watt panels running IQ8A for each of them. I'm wanting to get into batteries next, but if my calculations are correct, with the 64a limitation, they will be recommending a split system. What other battery setup would you recommend? We are a farm, and average about 80kw of usage a day. In the summer, have way more power than we consume obviously, and in the winter, December and January we get about half of what we consume. I would like to add a generator at some point down the road. Our power company does Net metering on a 1 for 1 until our meter reads zero, and then goes to cost avoidance model which doesn't pay hardly anything.
If you are paying someone else to install it, I would go with the FranklinWH system. Just make sure they do not design it using additional IQ Gateways. You would connect a couple of the strings to the backup panel using the aPbox to shed those circuits as needed during a utility outage, but they would still report back to the original IQ Gateway. The aPower2 is coming out early next year which will have double to power output per battery. I have a good video on the FranklinWH system as well. Thanks for watching the channel.
@RockyBroadSolarLLC I'm pretty handy, and wouldn't be afraid to try myself if there are better options in terms DIY world...also, thinking I may disconnect from the grid entirely once I get batteries and a generator setup. In a year, generate more power than I use, so the $500 a year it costs to be connected, well just don't sit well with me if I can cover it all on my own.
I am in the Blackmountain Helene disaster area. Medical special needs folks had no way to charge batteries of eletric wheelchair s. No way to use oxygen machines. Have solar power generators. No electricity for two weeks. This caused more of a burden on able body folks and volunter rescue folks. Some folks had to go to the hospital to stay alive. If there had been safe no fuel solar generators this would have prevented trama. Alot of celluar phones did not work to call 911 for medical help. Just a gallon of water weights about eight pounds to flush a torilet one time. Still going to be lifting cases of water for months. I greatly appreciate all the hard physical labor volunteers from all over the U.SA. are doing to help us get a new normal. Prayers still save lives here . Please get super prepared in your area. The weather related disasters will be happening.
Agreed. It was a learning lesson for sure. Thanks for watching the channel.
