Hi, I know you posted this over a year ago but I'm gonna give you my two pennies worth anyway. No doubt you have since become more familiar with them as you showed a slight interest whilst watching the video of Witching Hour. Just to explain where I come from with regards to this act, I was there right at the beginning. I was 18 years old when I bought their first single In League With Satan and had turned 19 by the time I bought their first album. Now I would be the first to say that they weren't first class musicians BUT did they create something unique back when Sabbath lost Ozzy and the nearest thing to what they created was Lemmy's Motorhead. There was nothing else! Their first three albums are to die for. However, the third album At War With Satan though fantastic needed that same production vibe afforded to the legendary second album Black Metal. Though slightly dated now but you just haven't got a clue on the impact of this band in terms of atmosphere, their depiction of hell, awesome dark lyrics and the front man Cronos. Why, I believe he's vying for Satan's crown and I'm quite certain that Satan has turned to God pleading for asylum in heaven, all because he knows that Cronos is COMING! Theatrics aside, This threesome though rough at the edges were a force to be reckoned with but over time they themselves self destructed through the usual band politics and are now shadows of themselves. I reiterate if you have not succumbed to their first 3 albums, the best being the second you may not forgive yourself. On a side note; being an ardent rock fan I was fortunate in my early retirement to put pen to paper and write about my first love (Rock) and having articulated on Sabbath on my first outing a few years back I have now done the same with a handful of metal acts back in the 80s of which Venom have been given the largest slice of the cake in the second outing. 'Nuff Said.

As for the meaning it's all about what you feel it is about. For me the lyrics are very obvious, he's talking about how life sucks and there's nothing worth in life. Jim Steinman is the songwriter you're talking about and yes he wrote most of the most famous songs Meatloaf performed & this song is one of them. Jim Steinman was a theatrical writer with most of his music being written as if it was a stage play that's why it's hard to pin down the genre. In fact before his death they did take many of the songs on the 3 Bat Out of Hell albums and created a Bat Out of Hell Musical with one new song that Meatloaf was preparing to do for the 4th Bat Out of Hell album before his death. Meatloaf did actually write a few songs which aren't bad but he has said he didn't like his writing. Meatloaf originally performed with Stoney on their duet album Stoney & Meatloaf for Motown records before teaming up with Ted Nugent for his album Free for All and that was the year before Bat Out of Hell came out. The albums Jim Steinman was part of were Bat Out of Hell 1-3 (3 only had 7 songs written by him) Dead Ringer Braver Then We Are Bad Attitude (2 songs were written by Steinman) Welcome to the Neighborhood (2 songs were written by Steinman) Meatloaf did lose his voice after working on both Steinman albums back to back (BOH & Dead Ringer) & because of this Jim Steinman was asked to make his own album and he did called Bad for Good. Jim Steinman would also create two female fronted bands Fire Inc for the film Streets of Fire (listen to those songs) & Pandora's Box, which features the song It's All Coming Back to Me Now that was later made famous by Celine Dion. Steinman also worked with Bonnie Tyler on a couple of her albums and the Footloose soundtrack.
