Legend Retrievers - Retriever Training Alone
Приєднався 30 чер 2011
Follow along as I train my lab “Buck” (HRCH Grady's Young Buck MH QA2) for field trials and hunt tests. I post all my training sessions and trials...the good and the bad. I also post other dogs running as well.
I am an amateur and train alone and also with a training group. When I post things, know I’m not saying this is the correct way to do it. I’m just sharing my journey of training and competing. I welcome questions and comments.
Buck is 5 year old male black labrador retriever. He is out of NAFC Grady x QA2 Dream. Buck has his HRCH and MH titles and is also QA2. We are now running in the Amatuer and Open.
Buck is the first dog I have ever 100% trained myself. I have run him in every hunt test and field trial he has ever done. His talent exceeds my abilities as a trainer, but I’m working hard to learn more every day.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to make the videos more helpful. Please leave a comment or email me at: robertlmatthewsii@gmail.com

This is Buck’s and my sixth Amateur retriever field trial. It was the Lone Star Field Trial in Gainesville, TX on 4/7/23. There were 59 total dogs in the amateur. We were not called back because Buck popped on the last bird. In route to the bird he just turned around and sat down. It’s a confidence thing as I’ve handled him too much in training. He has unfortunately done this at several trials ...

This is Buck’s and my second Open retriever field trial. It was the Tulsa retriever club trial in Pawnee, OK on April 21, 2023. There were 94 total dogs. 47 dogs got called back after this series. We were not called back because Buck popped on the last bird. Total heart break as he was very close to the bird and I think he would have picked it up as he was down wind of it when he popped. Can i buy it in germany?
I would think you can buy it and have it shipped there.
A Stud !! great work !! wow !
Thank you Don
awesome hunt ! which gopro? did you crop that footage ? this is excellent work . I have a gopro12 and plan on doing this very thing with a head strap as well. it has 4k or 5.3 k so it should crop in pretty well. Great buck , good job videoing !!
Thank you. I think I have the GoPro 5. I shoot it in 4K at 120 frames per second. Then I zoom in when I edit it and it still has pretty good detail. I have found that my GoPro does not do well in low light. My iPhone does much better in low light conditions. I have my GoPro set on video so I can just hit the button and it will go from off to recording within a second. So I have the GoPro mounted on my head so all I have to do is reach up and press the button to start recording. It always happens so fast that you rarely have much time to get ready. I shot my biggest buck ever this past season and caught it on my GoPro as well. He grossed 197 inches. I have the video posted on my channel as well. Good luck this season!
So… would that dog be out, or do they give help in a Derby?
No, he was out. Dogs are dropped if they require any gunner help. This was done just to help the dog succeed so he hopefully learns from his mistake.
nicely done!
Thank you. My dog makes me look like I know what I’m doing as a trainer.
The umbrella is going to blow away in the wing
Just about
What I can’t hear ya
Happy to answer any questions since you can’t hear it. I was just explaining what I was doing. The description of the video gives background on what I was working on.
Good could of handled lesss but excellent
Thanks Mike. It was a tough trial for us, but was glad we finished.
very good work for such a young dog. If I was judging, I would have had to take him out for control on the blind. Too many cast refusals. Also the handler should have been given a gun warning for not shouldering the gun on the diversion
All good points. I agree that I didn’t think I passed after all my cast refusals on the water blind. He had a great land series so maybe that helped. They stopped me when I came off the line to tell me they weren’t sure I passed and that they were on the fence. I did get a warning for no shouldering the gun. They also mentioned that I didn’t shoot at the top of the arc on the final bird. Funny thing is I was so excited that I just kind of blanked shooting at the top of the arc. It was my first time ever running a Finished test so I was super nervous. I’ve come a long way since then as Buck now has his HRCH, MH and QA2 titles. Thanks again for your comments.
Where's the instructions on de cheating ?
The point of the video is not to teach you the concept of de-cheating, but to show you the process of it.
You said decheating? I don't see where you are doing this with this dog. What's the point of the video?
The dog is trying to cut to the shore early so they can get out and run down the shore to get the bumper. Instead, we handle the dog to keep them in the water until they get to the bumper. We repeat the concept by moving further down the shore and throwing it again. Additionally, the gunner is closer which makes the dog want to exit the water early. Make sense?
I love your videos and have watched so many. We are training for a finished test and it’s honestly more helpful to see what a fail looks like than it is to see someone pass perfectly. Especially coming from the seasoned level.
I’m glad they have been helpful. I agree that it is more helpful to see what failure looks like. Here is another finished test to look at. We barely passed this one. ua-cam.com/video/qeA2Z_HWMTg/v-deo.htmlsi=nbftJrcMeUBc6FHp The judges were really on the fence whether we passed and you can see why. This was our first finished test. You’ll see we really weren’t ready for it. His blind was terrible and he had a huge hunt on the middle bird. Luckily he did well on the land test so that helped us. Best of luck as you begin running in finished tests!
@@labguy303 that’s great! I’m part of Cowtown and running our hunt and it’s cool to see some of the judges’ chairs with the logo. I wish there was a specific number of cast refusals to know if you pass or fail, but I guess it depends on the judges
That’s great. I was thinking about running in the upcoming Cowtown test. I live in the Dallas area as well. Maybe I’ll see you there.
@@labguy303 sounds good! I’m in west Fort Worth, but I train out with some of the guys in Lonestar in north Dallas when I can
The dog runs that good you can forget that you left your program in your pocket if I’m judging! Steve
Miss Lonestar!!
You are too kind Steve. That sure means a lot coming from you. I’m still bummed you moved away. I learned so much from you in the short time you were in Texas. Miss you my friend.
So, you can handle on a mark, in a field trial?? Is there a limit?
Yes you can. But you may not get called back if you do. All depends how the other dogs do.
Ok. I’ve only done Hunt tests.
Totally understand. I started in hunt tests myself. Think about the difference as hunt tests judge on a standard. Field trials judge on a curve.
What series was this?
This was the 2nd series
Where did you wear your GoPro?
I have a head strap. I turn the camera a little to my left so it is lined up properly when I shoot.
Man, i never make the cut!
I was looking for the pic with you in it that was in front of the house in Elmo, but I couldn’t find it. We need to take more pics with you when you are up there!!!
Buck of a lifetime! Nice job
For sure. Thanks!
Nice vid big dog
Thanks bud
Awesome video. Great memories....
Thanks Keith. It’s funny to look back to see how far I’ve come over the years.
W rizz
a little high but still got the job done, nice job
What a hit
No kidding. I’ve never seen a deer drop with a bow before, unless it was a spine shot.
@@labguy303 yeah ikr 😅
He was an absolute beast, might be a world record
Could be
Congrats !
Thank you!
Wow instantly dropped
Thank you
If you think he’s a toad ⬇️
Bet
He’s a Toad
For sure
Nice Buck
Thanks
Wow, what a toad. Congrats.
Thank you
Dang! Great shot from that angle!
Thank you. I feel so blessed that it all worked out.
Good deer. I just got home from Kansas last Saturday
I love Kansas! You guys have some great bucks there. And I love that your rifle season isn’t in the middle of the rut.
Congrats on a monster buck
Thank you. I feel really fortunate.
This is a very bad exercise. To much whistling. The dog loses all his confidence.
The dogs become conditioned to it over time. It’s what you have to do if you are going to run field trials.
I also do this with the buckets but as soon as i take away the buckets i dont get the same confidence in the dog...does that mean i havent done the drill with the buckets enough?
Expect them to not have as much confidence without the buckets. I wouldn’t use the buckets for too long as they will be come dependent on it. I would probably shorten up the length or simplify in another way to help increase confidence.
Why are these guys wearing white shirts. I’ve been told and read in the AKC hunt trial test you have to wear dark or camouflage clothing.
This is a field trial. In hunt tests they wear camo. In field trials they wear white.
So on the second series, first mark, did the judges let that loop around to the right go? Because she never established a hunt?
They must have because she passed.
Which sire is she from? She’s amazing!!!!
She is out of Foxx
I LOVE that you didn't choose a perfect execution video (like a lot of guys do out there), so we can see how to correct the dog when mistakes are made. THANK YOU! :)
Glad you found that helpful. I post all the good and the bad. As painful as it is, I post my numerous failure in hunt test and trials as well.
Looks like you were up to something!
Training my own retriever as we speak! Keep the videos coming
That’s great. Will do. Good luck
dogs can see and hear so far. imagine their noses. 😮good doggy.
Totally agree. Dogs are so amazing.
Awesome shot! Congrats and the great buck!
Thank you! I was so pumped to have gotten it all on video.
This more of a handling drill than a blind drill correct? The problem I’m getting is when I take the white buckets away my pup runs the blind with his head down like he is hunting. I’ve gone back to 5 legged pattern blinds with white buckets. Is that correct?
Yes, you are correct. I did this drill to clean up and get better angle-back casts. And to carry the correct cast for a longer distance. The buckets make the exact location less relevant. I just want him to pick the correct bucket associated with the correct cast. I would do this only after the dog is comfortable doing cold blinds. Hard for me to give too much help not knowing all you’ve done with your dog. Have you done “force to the pile” and “double T”? If your dog is “hunting” instead of running with his head up, I would consider revisiting force to the pile to increase his sense or urgency when running blind.
I’m going to revisit some force to pile. It’s been awhile since we have done that drill. We have done our T and double T work even some reverse T work. I’ve just really been focused on marks bc I just got my first set of slinger wingers and swim by this spring. Thks for the reply.
Best of luck.
Congratulations!
Thank you Jeff
Congratulations love watching this dog work
Thank you Peter. I’m glad you enjoy it. We’ve sure come a long way. I’m actually at a trial right now. Is there anything I can add to the videos that would make them better?
Totally new to the game here but I've noticed you always send your dog on the word back weather it be a blind or a mark. Is that just personal preference or is there a reason? Just hoping to pass some junior tests here this summer but have enjoyed watching your dogs run in all the videos.
Hi Dan. My dogs name is “Buck” so it may sound like I’m saying back sometimes. I do use his name for marks and “back” for blinds. Good luck in your junior tests. You will never forget your first junior test.
