Why Your Water Bill Doesn't Pay for Any Water At All.
Переглядів 1442 місяці тому
This was a quick project I made because I hear a common refrain when discussing water leaks: the city, or the people, or SOMEONE is somehow losing money when water leaks go unrepaired. When you shake out the math, though, the cost of lost water is actually so tiny that's it's practically zero. It's a small section of a pie chart, which itself is part of a small section of another pie chart, whi...

One thing I do a poor job of explaining is what I mean by the "Priorities" and how they are associated with money. What I mean is, the highway standards, if we are to follow them, seem to involve spending a lot of extra money to ensure that cars are able to go over the speed limit. How about we use some of that extra money to, instead, match the "natural speed" of the road to match the speed li...

    Mercedes will take good care of you at Las Americas. Probably the cleanest restaurant in town - either location. I doubt anyone who rides the bus or a bike to dinner will be eating at any of these places. Check out Noodles and Crawfish on Phoenix Ave. (Vietnamese & Cajun)

      I agree about Las Americas, I have been there a few dozen times and everything is perfect every time. I personally ride a bicycle almost exclusively and eat at all these restaurants regulaly (I'm going to Stonehouse tonight, in fact). Noodles and Crawfish is great, but unfortunately they were not open yet when I made this video.

      What do you mean? Our hospitals are on Towson Avenue and Rogers Avenue which are not affected by this plan. In fact, both roadways are scheduled to be expanded through massive state and Federal infrastructure subsidies. The mobility plan maintains existing cycling/walking infrastructure and also adds it to existing empty spaces in the middle of nowhere (I doubt that will actually happen, but that's the map they drew). It doesn't remove any existing infrastructure except for 1 lane of parking along B-Street, which, lets face it, nobody uses despite costing millions of dollars in maintenance.

    Sorry, Nara Chicken is awful. Also, while I recognize that three girls has a good reputation and deservedly so, if you're going to put that type of food on your list, the obvious candidate would be Pho Vietnam, which not only has a larger menu, but the chef is top-notch and her presentation is off the charts good. Though I appreciate the knowledge share, I do have a couple of issues to call out. See below: 1. You have 0 Vietnamese restaurants - Pho Vietnam is a gem, and there are various other great Vietnamese spots that you missed in a city that is largely highlighted by its Vietnamese offerings 2. Patrick's is a local chain that spawned out of a spot in Russellville

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort Місяць тому

      #9 on the list, Three Girls Pho, is Vietnamese. Agreed that there are a plethora of amazing Vietnamese options. I unfortunately could not include every restaurant. Russellville is from Arkansas, so it counts. Other local chains such as Razorback Pizza, Slim Chickens, Gusano's, etc. would also count.

I will now tuck my tail and find a rock to crawl under for a few days. *EDIT* Three Girls Pho looks great! Don't think it was around when I lived in the area. My go-to was always Pho Vietnam 🤤

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort Місяць тому

      B Street needs to be repaved. Would you rather the city spend $5m to repave both lanes, then another $5m in 20 years when its time to repave again? Or would you rather spend $1.5m to build a bike lane and $2.5 to repave only one lane, then $2.5m to repave the same every 20 years after. In 40 years, the city saves $3.75m. All I hear from opponents is that they love HUGE tax & spend policies to subsidize their private property.

    • @theantichrome9842
      @theantichrome9842 Місяць тому

      @@AndyInTheFort Less than 2 miles of repaving at $5 million... thats over $474 per foot. Subsidies indeed. They should have left the old brick streets alone.

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort Місяць тому

      @@theantichrome9842 If you really believe that, you will join me in advocating for more brick streets then. They are extremely unpopular because they are "bumpy," but cheaper than concrete to maintain and their lifetime maintenance cost is lower than asphalt for the first 60 years of service. Where they get expensive is when they have to be replaced, but there is also new technology to make that cheaper if a city is willing to invest in it. And yes, paving streets is expensive and $474/ft is not unrealistic. Widening Massard was exactly $1000/foot. If you oppose this type of overspending, I really suggest you check out the other videos on this channel because a central tenet is that (1) roadways and the space they take up is way more expensive than anyone realizes, and (2) everyone is just okay with that for some reason. A potential $2.1 million spent on waterslides caused outrage to everyone, but $5.6m to repave a small stretch of Phoenix, approved at the same meeting on 7/9/24, wasn't even a blip on the radar. We would all have personal butlers if it weren't for the taxes we pay on roads (HALF of the city's total sales tax goes towards roads).

    The issue isn't the water rate increase, it's that the old leadership took tax money to fix the sewer issues that the federal government said to fix or be fined and then they sqandered the money and didn't fix the issues and now we are paying off a federal fine over issues we already paid to be fixed. That's why people are angry.

    You make some fair points but where this argument against Die Hard being a bona fide Christmas movie falls flat for me is in the claim that it doesn't display any themes related to Christmas movies such as redemption, generosity, selflessness, sacrifice or community. I and ChatGPT can certainly think of examples showcasing these values in the movie: # Redemption **John McClane’s Redemption:** - John McClane, the protagonist, is initially estranged from his wife, Holly. Throughout the movie, his efforts to save her and the other hostages allow him to redeem himself in her eyes and rebuild their fractured relationship. His bravery and determination demonstrate his commitment to family and love, common themes in Christmas stories. # Generosity **Al Powell’s Support:** - Al Powell, the LAPD officer who assists McClane from the outside, exhibits generosity by offering unwavering support to McClane. Despite being a stranger, Powell goes above and beyond to help McClane, even risking his own safety. **McClane’s Aid to Hostages:** - McClane's actions to save the hostages can also be seen as an act of generosity. He puts his own life on the line repeatedly to ensure the safety of people he doesn't know, showcasing the selfless giving spirit often associated with Christmas. # Selflessness **McClane’s Heroism:** - McClane’s entire mission is driven by selflessness. He endures physical pain and personal danger to save others. His willingness to face overwhelming odds without regard for his own safety exemplifies the selflessness that is celebrated during the Christmas season. **Holly’s Strength:** - Holly Gennaro McClane shows selflessness by trying to keep the hostages calm and safe under dire circumstances. Her leadership and bravery help maintain some order and hope among the hostages. # Sacrifice **McClane’s Physical Sacrifice:** - McClane’s physical sacrifices are evident throughout the film. He endures numerous injuries, from walking barefoot over broken glass to enduring multiple fights with heavily armed terrorists. His willingness to sacrifice his own well-being for the safety of others mirrors the sacrificial spirit of many Christmas tales. **Hans Gruber’s Downfall:** - Although not a positive example, the sacrifices made by the villains inadvertently highlight the heroism of McClane. Hans Gruber and his team sacrifice their lives for greed, contrasting sharply with McClane’s altruistic sacrifices, further emphasizing the movie’s moral undertone. # Community **The Bond Between McClane and Powell:** - The relationship that develops between McClane and Powell underscores the importance of community. Their teamwork and mutual trust are vital to overcoming the crisis. This bond mirrors the communal spirit often highlighted in Christmas movies, where individuals come together to overcome adversity. **Hostages’ Unity:** - The hostages, despite their fear, come together in solidarity. Their collective patience and mutual support during the crisis reflect the communal and supportive atmosphere that is central to the Christmas season. By weaving these values into its action-packed narrative, "Die Hard" aligns with the themes of many Christmas stories, reinforcing the idea that it is, indeed, a Christmas movie at its core.

Idk why this makes you so mad but the majority of us have ALWAYS seen it as a Christmas movie because.. it indisputably is lmfao

    Poor land use is a real problem. In northwest Arkansas, a lot of the land is rocky hills. Still, the best use planners can come up with for flat arable land is a Walmart parking lot.

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort 2 місяці тому

      For an upcoming video I plan to go over Fort Smith's parking minimums and really dig into them, because they can actually be quite silly in ways that I have not heard people discuss before. For example, a barber shop might have 2 chairs. Their business does really well, they want to expand, and that means buying more chairs. But our code says they legally cannot bring a new chair into the building until they bulldoze the building next door and pave over it with asphalt. How can anyone support a law that makes a chair illegal? Then, in terms of maximum parking requirements, which I should be philosophically against, I now (thanks to the math I did for the video you just watched) can calculate EXACTLY how much revenue the city loses when private entities use land for unused parking. Even without a parking minimum, a large retailer like Wal-Mart or Target often builds more than they need, and on busy days customers just trawl the front of the lot for a good spot, rather than utilize the excess parking in the back. It's an absolute waste and the city should be compensated for the lost revenue and excess utility infrastructure they still have to provide for space that is empty 99.9999% of the time.
