I'm building and designing a diesel electric hybrid motorcycle and I will soon be selling my Prius and buying a 93-98 Ford diesel to run on waste oil. I'd like to build an on board filteration setup in the bed of the truck so dirty oil can go in and clean oil can come out. Upgrade the front tank to the 60 gallon tank and the rear 12 gallon tank to the 38 gallon tank. I work in a shop with 25 other guys most of which have shops at home and plenty of waste oil to give me for free. My current filter setup is EZ bucket top filters. 600, 400, 200, 100, 75, and 55 microns. I stack them all on top of each other and pour the oil through. I then let it sit for a week. I then open the valve 3" from the bottom of the bucket to drain it through my 25 micron sock filter that is dropped through the middle of the lid of the bucket. Then that sits for a week... Then 15, 10, 5, 1, then .5 micron buckets. Then eventually into the 55gallon drum which I fill to 50 gallons then add 5 gallons of gasoline and stir with a 3' long 2" garden auger which fits through the hole of the drum so I'm sure it's mixed properly. My first batch has been sitting for months, my second barrel is almost full. I am predicting around 150mpg on my motorcycle based on gearing, weight and engine loads. I will have the factory fuel tank that came mounted on the engine holding 1 gallon of diesel, then once the engine has warmed up I will switch over to waste oil. Hope to hear from you guys. I think at one point I was talking to you or your dad or boss whoever via text about this. I have more oil supply than I can filter, burn or handle not to mention I have a personal friend that only does transmissions and said he has a full tote for me. I'd be happy to promote your product in whatever videos I make. Do you think a 12v transfer pump would do the job for on board filteration? I was planning on running an on board centrifuge, AND a series of filters. And when the "clean" tank is full it will have a spill over back into the dirty tank. A carpenters style latter rack covered in solar panels to charge the batteries that run the centrifuge while I'm parked at work.

I’ve used garbage pumps from harbor freight, they can be quite the headache to prime sometimes. You really can’t beat a gear pump, it’s the type of pump most aviation engines use for their oil pumps. This video is amazing, you are doing our generation a solid, keep up the good work brother.

Wow, you guys are doing a whole series on the black oil process! That is awesome. Thank you for making the real life videos. Having these video series out on YT and the public domain puts the whole black oil industry a step ahead. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make that happen.

You could also put a lid on it and add a vacuum pump, then boil off all the water at a much lower temperature to make it safer.

Man I build a centrifuge and I got a pump putting out 80psi and the centrifuge is barely spinning. Don’t know what to do.

Increasing RPM from 3,450 to 6,000 produces 3.03 times greater g-force. For a given bowl design, it takes 1/3 as long to achieve full stratification, and settle out particles. (assuming precipitation rate is proportionate to centrifugal force) It may well be worth the up-grade, if available.

Hmmm.....wanted to figure this out as I have a 1949 Pontiac w/a centrifuga oil filter inside the engine pan. this vid doesn't show where the heavy dirty sludge goes or is routed and the in out pathway of the oil. need better explanation.

You actually CAN get <.5 micron filtration in a single pass. You just need to cut the flow rate. Figure the G's of centrifugal force X lip depth. (from outer ring to breach). the doubling the lip depth with half the g force, will give the same result as high g's, with a shallow lip depth. To get the single pass filtration, just think cups per hour, not gallons per hour. Viscosity plays just as big a role as either of the factors I just mentioned. Heating the oil to thin it, or, merely cutting the flow rate even further for thicker oil will allow the sub-micron single pass filtration. The one with the rounded bowl, with the lip barely larger than the inlet, would work really well, just because of the deeper lip depth. Another advantage of that design, is that the velocity of the oil leaving the bowl is much lower velocity, reducing sheer stress on the oil, reducing misting, as well as foaming. To get around the lower g-force that close to the center, the inlet just needs to have 'spokes', keeping the dirty oil isolated from the separated oil, then, releasing it closer to the outer rim of the bowl.

I want to make a portable wvo tank for my step van where I can dump and filter used wvo and then separate the water. I've read you can let it settle and then drain the water out, but this would take how much time?? and if you are driving around with a tank of this then it's probably not going to settle well right? Heating it how you did is interesting but doing this in a van for living that uses solar power for electricity??? Looking for ideas on portable tanks.

Why can't you just syphon for the top and leave the water in the bottom

Use an air bubbler to bring the water to the top.
