Oh, boy. I wasn't even the one in the abusive relationship, just witness to my mother's, and this is so real. Creeping around in your own home, so frightened to even be there that when my mother picked me up from my grandmother's at night, she'd take us to get food to eat in the car or go to a movie. I was about eight, staying up past midnight away from home with my mom just to avoid him. And I'd stay at friend's houses when I could. The sound of the garage door opening was the cue for me to run to my room and lock the door. All the while, I was deeply worried for my pets stuck in the house. The house that my mother was paying the rent for, by the way, and that he never contributed a dime to. And I know that these abusive partners can and do horrifically warp your mind, but I still have to say, when you're in the superior financial position, your own child doesn't want to be at home and resents you, your home is no longer a home, just ... why? Why are you still there? I just don't understand. I know there are many circumstances where due to money or fears over child custody women can't easily escape, but my mother's mindset during that time will always be baffling and, yes, infuriating to me.

You CANNOT get the help you need in northeast Wisconsin. You might be called a liar like I was, and refused any and all resources from the Rainbow House. I didn't have these specific abuses except the getting called pig regularly. I was spit on, my money was taken, my car forced in his name. I was useless, stupid, crazy, fat. If I left "his" car would be reported stolen and I would go to jail. There was no getting away. When he decided he wanted another woman to move in and was done with me, he alleged abuse & violence and was believed without question. He was able to get a restraining order and an eviction (even though I was moved out for 3 weeks) to make sure I couldn't get an apartment. Funny the things a violent rich man can do.

Damn, this short film focused on couples and relationships. But for some reason, I could relate to this lady. I'm 18. And my mom treats me like this 😢 and what's worse is that my father knows everything but doesn't even care. He doesn't care about what I do unless it disappoints my mom. And she's disappointed at almost everything I do. So, I just get double torture from him. Whenever I try to talk back to my mom, she blackmails me. Saying things like they're the ones who give me everything and I have no existence without them. And then she tells my father these, and then he's on me, questioning me why I treated my mother like that. When I was the actual victim

Anyone in an abusive relationship, please : 1) try to speak to someone and share what you're going through. It is so important to COME OUT OF ISOLATION and speak the whole truth to another SAFE person (a priest, social worker, therapist, family member, colleague, nurse, doctor, policeman etc). It is important to put the blame where it belongs: on the perpertrator, not on yourself, even if the abuser makes you think it's your fault. So do not feel ashamed, because THAT is the vicious circle, you believe it's your fault, which makes you feel shame, which lowers your self-esteem even more, so you stay. YOU have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Resist feeling sorry for the perpetrator, start feeling sorry for yourself, and your children if you have them, they see everything. 2) get help in SAFELY escaping the situation, stay with someone safe if possible, avoid being alone with the abuser as much as possible. 3) please educate yourself, watch videos on youtube, google DV, educate yourself on abusive relationships, coercion, trauma bonding, learned helplessness, the repetition compulsion, the toxic shame cycle, brainwashing, love-bombing, narcissism, pyschopaths, sociopaths, relationship red flags, and complex PTSD. Learning about the problem will help you not go back to it, you will better understand the dynamics compelling you to return to the abuser. Knowledge is power. Take your power back. 4) I would advise any adult or child victim of domestic violence to get therapy as soon as you can to start the healing process. You have complex PTSD. Your soul has been murdered. Women everywhere, GET OUT at the first red flag. We can work today, we can be independent, autonomous, we don't need abusive men. Say NO to abuse. Never ever allow yourself to be abused by ANYONE. Get out at the first sign. And don't look back.

I think, abuse also isn't always that "explicit". The jokes can be backhanded and not directly mean, but still degrading. They might question you, your opinions and choices a lot (covering it as just being curious or well-meaning). The comments aren't necesseraly considered generally bad, but they hit you exactly at your weak spot (that people outside your relationship might not even know about). The actions might be small, but making you feel like you're less than them. They decide things over your head (maybe about essential things like money). They make fun of you when you're with other people and don't get why you can't just take a "joke". You're also missing the small signs of tenderness and love in your everyday life and might tell yourself that you're partner just "isn't the type" for such things (while secretly you believe that you're just not lovable enough to receive such affection). On the other hand you have learned to mistrust the grand gestures, because you know there's a price attached to them - and you'll be called out ungrateful for not being happy about the effort. You wonder when you lost your selfworth, you once thought you're a strong person who wouldn't let anyone treat you badly... but the "shrinking" happened in small steps and suddenly you find yourself not half the person you once used to be.

This is precisely why l've told women to have a career, some way to make money, and have a "run fund." Add to it, have bank statements sent to a trusted friend or relative, and SHUT UP about it. I don't care how nice the man seems at first. Keep adding to it. If things go bad, you, your kids, if you have them, will have apartment rent. Could buy a car, and go to a new place. Would you rather wait til you're trapped, broke, and abused? Start that "run fund." NOW. And SHUT UP about it.
