In 1990 they changed the pinion shaft from tapered to straight. 1989 and earlier will need the puller. Pinion puller may not be needed on 1990 and later unless it’s stuck on. *TECH NOTES on pinion puller* Used to install pressed on splined pinion gears on 1939-1953 Big Twin. Wouldn’t happen to know how to do this on a 2004? I understand it’s in the TSSM. I’ve installed a Simple wire harness and not sure how to do this to make the ground it needs to the neutral switch? Have new ECM (Dynatech) that does not require TSSM. Any info is appreciated.
Does the new wire harness come with a wire that’s designated for a neutral light?
That’s not a motor it’s a Harley Davidson engine, the electric starter motor which they have that starts engine
Your college degree is paying off! Anyways. The term “motor” is often used interchangeably with “engine” because both serve a similar function-converting energy into mechanical motion. Historically, “motor” has been more associated with electrical devices (like electric motors), while “engine” is typically linked to internal combustion or mechanical engines, like those in cars and motorcycles. However, in casual conversation, many people use “motor” as a shorthand for “engine,” even when referring to gas-powered or diesel engines. This might be due to the widespread use of electric motors and a general tendency to simplify language. In some cases, “motor” might also be influenced by marketing, where the term sounds more modern or versatile. So, while there’s a technical distinction between a motor (usually electric) and an engine (often combustion-powered), the terms have become somewhat interchangeable in everyday language.
What about a rocker cover shim/gasket? Are those available? Could be worth looking in to as design your own?
Good idea!
Is it easier to get to the oil pan while changing front and rear mounts or does that not make a difference? I need to do all of it, wondering if I can remove the front mount and lift the engine some to get to the pan easier
Great tip!
Thanks!
What the heck is a "breather gear"?!?!? Don't tell me harley needs gears to keep blowby from spraying like a tomcat.
The breather gear controls the air circulation through the engine and aids in controlling the oil flow as well. when the pistons are moving down, the breather gear is open, allowing the flow of scavanged oil from the flywheels to be blown into the cam chest, oiling the cam, cam drive and lifters, settling in the bottom of the cam chest at the oil pump suction to be sent to the filter and then back to the oil bag. as the pistons move up, the breather gear closes, inhibiting reverse flow of the oil and air.
@willcountypowersports6338 wait...it uses positive crankcase pressure to lube the valvetrain?? I'm speechless. (Thank you for the detailed explanation.)
When using the tool to remove the bearing insure you grab the backside of the bearing as well. If you only grab the one side, the tool will crush the bearing and send needle bearings into the case
That is correct
Pretty good explanation. Except for the “82-94” part. Not many 82 Evos out there, or 83s for that matter…anywhere…
Great catch! 84+ I get confused at times with the dates givin the fxr came out in 82. And it wasn’t until 84 then they put the Evo in them.
@ I get it, wife has 82 FXR. First yr Harley buy back and first yr Evo get confusing.
@@megastick9324nice first year
@@willcountypowersports6338 yup, little fender eagle and all lol
The MoCo spacers are notorious for being too soft, so much so the seal would eventually wear a groove into it causing leakage. Baker, Vulcan and others use case-hardened spacers to avoid this problem.
Yes, that is the brands that I recommend using when changing them out
Also, never re-use the older head bolts (stamped CP) as they were manufactured from a softer steel which was known to stretch.
That is correct
Use James gaskets never had a problem in 40 years.
Excellent
Glad to help!
I got two evo powerd bike both leak at base gasket no matter what I do . One of em I'm switching to twin cam for this reason
What year? And did you use a metal base gasket?
@willcountypowersports6338 both my bikes are 98 ones a total stock low mile evo with 14k miles I've used stock h.d base gasket twice on rear cylinder no luck keeps seeping. My other is a mild built evo 10 over high compression pistons tried many things no luck decked the case cylinder turned on base different cylinder many different gaskets .done with the built evo going twin cam giving up on this engine it's been taken apart to many times
@@RonaldRepinski now that’s pretty interesting because I was going to suggest machining the base of the cylinder next. Also, I would check the cases to make sure they are not offset.. and typically if the cylinder studs are turned around with the base of the stud in the case, a metal gasket and everything is within spec, they usually seal up.
Automatic transmission fluid is the way this has been done for over 60 years!!!
Soap and water 😆
Clean it with water and watch it rust and then throw it away and buy a Honda.
Horrible advice, but thanks Mr. Honda salesman
I've got a 98 and both cylinders leak. Was like that when I bought it.
It very well could be the gaskets are just worn out.
The right way the stud should be installed with the flange against the case & just about all EVO engines with paper gaskets are gonna leak without getting the engine warm before hitting the throttle hard . In my shop all EVOs get James metal base gaskets & Cometic MLS head gaskets they never leak !

Water will rust immediately, clean with oil, and remove the excess with paper towels.
Always use WD-40 then oil right after washing. You’ll never get rust then
@willcountypowersports6338 thank you
What's wrong with using brake cleaner and re lubrication after cleaning?
Break clean does not remove the grit from the crosshatches
It has nothing to do with what year or even what brand it is. If it is a cylinder that you bored and honed, or just honed, or did anything in that produces grit, you need to wash it out. Every machine shop guy ever has told me to wash it with hot soapy water. You can use brake clean and all that, but it isn't as effective as hot soapy water. The honing companies even make special brushes for cleaning the cylinders. I used to be hard headed too and didn't take the time to do it right. If you add up all the towels and brake clean, you will see why ole boy says to use hot soapy water. Especially when you are dealing with a whole engine block and not just a cylinder.
I use hot water and dish soap followed by WD-40 then light oiling
Break parts cleaner works better because there aint no need to rinse or dry. If it says use dawn then break out the break parts cleaner or carb cleaner.... It flushes out the gritty stuff easily. Or just put in the extra labor and use dawn
I would only recommend washing with water and soap only way to get all the grit out of the crosshatches then WD-40 then oil
@willcountypowersports6338 oh okay yeah that makes sense
Good straightforward tips.
Thanks!
Nice speciality tool tip. If you have to remove a braided line, you can't cut it with a razor blade. You would have to use a small cut off wheel on a Dremel tool. Speciality tools have their place for special applications.
This is exactly correct.
Razor blade up the side. Works every time. Of course you'll need a new hose.
Thanks for your input.
Fuel hose is cheap. Breaking that brass fitting isn't worth the risk. Slit the hose lengthwise with a razor, peel it off like a banana peel and replace it.
😇💩... A Japanese [Keihin] made carburetor for Harley!!!
They did it best always have.
Another pointless tool for the mechanic that don't know s***
Thanks for your input.
Take a tiny pick tool, point it down so the point is hitting the the metal bib. Push towards hose, it will put a tiny bump up in the hose/bib joint. hit with WD40, Repeat 180 degree away. Hose will twist of with your hand in many cases....but this iusally works too, but not always..........
Good info!
Bro just use a regular small set of channellocks
Thanks for your input.
If hose is all crimped in from clamp, like this one, ITS JUNK! Don't be so lazy and cheap, replace the freekin hose!
That’s not always the case.
tools to open a jar are very similar :D
That’s literally basically the same thing as using regular pliers. I grab the hose and wiggle back and forth. You don’t need to grab it super hard so u don’t damage it. Only difference with this tool is the pliers are curled a little bit.
The difference is this tool is designed for removing hoses.
Inventing tools to do things that are easily done without that tool. Nice pliers, but totally not needed.
@@willcountypowersports6338 So all I have to do is say that this piece of paper is designed to be folded. All other pieces of paper will fold, but this piece is designed to fold.
Always heard wd40 on rubber is just prepping it to fail.
Yeah, overtime it can make the rubber swell. It’s best to clean the line out afterwards anyways. Or you can use the silicone base WD-40
@willcountypowersports6338 real silly question about the wd40 with silicone. If I got a squeaky belt could a TINY bit of that be ok? Obviously you don't want a belt slipping but I was thinking a little on the non grooved side might be ok?
@@s.a.dtactical378 I don’t see it being too much of a problem as long as you’re using a silicone base lubricant too much would cause slipping, but I don’t see it being a problem.
if you consider that hose stuck then you need more time in the garage.
@@burtreynolds3143 If you consider that a legitimate comment, then you should probably make a video on how to “remove” it the right way.
Weve always used indian head.works great and isn’t a pain in the ass to clean up.
Good to know I’ll keep that in mind!
Bro i went with the fxr 94 pulley.Just like this!
Awesome! Did everything work out the way it should?
Thats a good tip thanks! For general average riding how long do they last?
Around 20k miles I would be checking them/replacing if needed. Or if the bikes been sitting for years dry rot will start to happen.
Hey man you got ig? I’m doing this right now on a twin cam efi Dyna chopper I’m building and have a few questions about everything I cut out and how I ran it to the new ignition switch

Nice work what did you use?
1/8” tungsten bit on a Dremel
so does that mean at 10% water or 5% water it boils at that what’s the percentage?
That’s a good question. I’m not 100% sure on that. I just know what the difference is between wet and dry.
Great idea!!
Turning clockwise is less fuel**
My bleeder broke off so I just bleed through the fitting on the line.
I haven't checked mine on my 07 dyna in over 25k miles
Thank you man. Just showed me how AutoZone always gives bad parts. I knew my original was bad so I replaced w an AutoZone one and it stayed revving on high rpms. So I went on UA-cam cuz ik it’s the valve and I seen ur video so I decided to open up the new one and I seen how it was stuck and malfunctioning. It wasn’t fully spinning or closing. Just ordered a new one thanks to you!
Excellent
You literally ruined whatever those fasters are holding
That would be a rotor that’s going in the garbage can. Hence why I said you can do this as long as the rotor is going in the garbage.
