Mesa Boogie 400+ Rehab & Restoration
Переглядів 2933 роки тому
A Mesa Boogie 400 bass amp that a client recently purchased second hand. He wanted it gone through and the standby switch replaced. Little did he know what half-asses butchering lurked inside. When it arrived only 4 of the 12 6L6 output tubes were conducting!! I ended up replacing all of the electrolytic caps, diodes in the HT rectification, standby switch, AC mains cable and all the tubes.

We got the head out of the case and I was looking for the Rev on the board when I noticed the exact thing you show here. Screen Grid Resistor totally Fried and Same position and everything. old vide but exactly what I needed. Can you tell me the correct resistor to get? Don't ask for exclusive EF86 input mod if you don't want whole video disappear. They say EF86 is too noisy for guitar inputs, despite Vox, smaller companies, diy crowd and others using it with great success in a typical 18W or 30W combos, others too. Shock mount with O rings.

    Sounds great!I just purchased this amp in the head version.I am very happy with it except for the very weak reverb.I have to put the reverb on 10 to get the level of reverb i get on my PRRI and DRRI at about 5 or so.I have heard that the reverb circuit is a different circuit being that this is a higher gain amp.Is your reverb weak?

    • @Ri-Ci
      @Ri-Ci 2 роки тому

      I have the combo version of this amp and the reverb is quite huge sounding. The cable going to the reverb tank is extremely short and can pull off easily which happened to mine during shipping. The pin actually broke so I had to replace it and I used a longer cable as well to prevent further issues. It’s a pretty easy check to do and you won’t need to break into the upper chassis.

    Running bias at 40%?! You'll starve your output tubes! The general rule is to run 70%-80% of max plate wattage of your output tubes.

    • @racmusiccom
      @racmusiccom 4 роки тому

      Agreed. Which is why I adjusted the bias on this unit by adding a 33k parallel to the stock 22k resistor to make the negative fixed bias voltage more positive. Which increased it to 60% idle plate dissipation. While most tubes produced 60 years ago could handle biasing for increased idle plate dissipation in excess of 70%, I’ve found current production tubes become less reliable at these increased operation. In addition I personally have found most players don’t notice a significant tone / response difference to justify the increased idle plate current. In fact more have found they prefer the more moderate 60% IPD which allows for greater swing positive and negative without reaching saturation or clipping.

    I bought a brand new pair of gt el84s grade 5 for my blues jr but when I put them on and turned on the amp I noticed quiet hum that wasn't there with the older tubes so I checked the grade o f the old tubes and they were number 1. Is this bad? Did i damage the amp or tubes?

    • @racmusiccom
      @racmusiccom 4 роки тому

      Sorry for the slow reply. I obviously don’t check UA-cam account often. There is a chance you have a damaged resistor in the filament supply that is causing the hum. You should really have a qualified tech check it out. And these amps routinely average 90-110% max plate dissipation at idle. IE wayyyyy to hot. The short of it is that every Blues Jr really needs to have the negative bias voltage increased so the tubes will run cooler and not flame out like they often do.

    Just bought one, love it. It is what I've been looking for. This time around Marshalls aren't doing it for me. Had a 27 year break from guitar playing. What I like is it sounds great with various guitars. Like Joe I switch guitars often. I've been doing the impedance mismatch thing for many years with stereo equipment, sometimes it works other times it don't. This Z-master mismatch made in heaven. Everyone is talking about a 1957 Bandmaster, I believe it was a 1959. Anyways an original Bandmaster goes for $6000 and the Zmaster goes for less than half that and it's a new amplifier. This was the first brand new amplifier I have ever bought was a little scared from the new smell of it burning off some paint or chemicals. I had that smell from new ham radio amplifiers too. That's another thing look up to Joe for. Mike

    " The Blues Jr is a fixed, non-adjustable bias amp (like Mesa). This means that the bias supply was set at the factory, and changing it requires removing and replacing a resistor on the PCB to adjust it (or modifying the amp to make it adjustable).'

    • @racmusiccom
      @racmusiccom 5 років тому

      Phillip Holmes yep, factory circuit in the Blues Jr is fixed negative bias. And my preference is to mod the bias circuit and add a 10k bias pot to the chassis so it is easily adjustable in the future. But adding a resistor parallel to R51 or R52, depending if more or less negative bias voltage is needed, will get it done without having to pull the main pcb.

      @@MAP448 the output section of most recent revision Blues Jr (IE black pcb) is drastically different than earlier v4 green pcb revision. The most recent black pcb revision has a cathode biased output section. Generally this type of circuit is very forgiving as far as the bias point varying little regardless of the operating rating of the tube. Where as a fixed negative voltage biased output section (all Blues Jr revisions leading up to the current black pcb) is not as forgiving. So in fact the engineers have “reinvented the wheel” with your Blues Jr ;)

      @racmusiccom 3 роки тому

      @@MAP448 the handful of early tweeds, a few brown tolex models, the black champ and bronco…and I’m sure a few more after that escape me at the moment. Let’s say “several” other Fender amp designs have utilized a cathode bias output section as to not be mis-lead and mis-inform others. My point was that you said “reinvent the wheel” as if to imply that adjusting fixed negative bias voltage for an idle plate dissipation around 60% would negatively impact the performance of the amp. More times than not, adjusting the bias will actually improve performance of most units with the non-adjustable fixed negative voltage bias circuit as with the one shown in this video. In fact most units typically operate in excess of 100% idle plate dissipation and eventually fail catastrophically causing excessive damage to the amp if such adjustment to the bias voltage is not done.
