Alex picked up a special order 92' Cutlass Supreme International with the 3.1 bored out to a 3.4, dual overhead cams, and a Getrag 5 speed manual. 7k redline and super sweet.

    I was 9 months old when the the W platform Regal came out. My parents bought one, it was blue and a dealer's sample dad got for a good price because he worked for GM in Oshawa at the time. We sold it in '91 when my youngest brother was born and my parents drove GMC Safari vans from then on. I always love your videos❤

    I think GM would have been better off with the original plan of having the N bodies replace the G bodies instead of spending $7 billion on this program. GM could have just restyled the A body sedans. I guess it was hard to predict that the personal luxury coupe market would plummet after around 1986.

    A few details: * The 1977-1996 B-Body sedan chassis is based on a the 1973-1977 A-Body frame and rear suspension, with the 2nd Gen F-Body front suspension. The wider 1977-1996 B-Body wagon rear suspension is closely related to the 1971-1976 B-Body sedan. * OBDII wasn't introduced until the 1996 model year US market B-Bodies. * The LB4 V6 was a 9C6 Taxi option for 1992 & 1993 only. * 1996 B-Bodies were produced until mid-December 1996 at GM Arlington, TX. * Other than being optional only the 9C1, all other 1991 B-Bodies were powered by the L03. For 1992, the Caprice and Custom Cruiser wagons had the L05 as an option, and standard on all Roadmasters. For 1993, the L05 became the standard engine on the Caprice Classic LTZ. * Chevrolet didn't use the "Estate" name on this generation of Caprice wagon. Also, woodgrain sides weren't available until 1993 on the Caprice, and then it was an extra cost option. * The 1994-1996 Caprice Classic 9C1 came standard with rear disc brakes, same as the Impala SS. * The 1960s Vista Roof was found on both the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser and Buick Sport Wagon of the era. * Woodgrain sides was standard equipment on the Roadmaster wagon, with the RPO WB4 wood delete becoming available later. * The 1991 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser used the shorter Roadmaster wagon quarter glass and thicker C-Pillar. The 1992 Custom Cruiser used the longer Caprice quarter glass ans thinner C-Pillar.

    I had a new LT1 96 Caprice and loved it (mostly). It’s interesting to think that they were basically 77 B bodies which were really just the 73 A body platform. My caprice had a wonderful ride, a nice powertrain with the LT1 and it was so roomy, quiet and comfortable. It also had a lot of suspension travel, positraction and ride height so rough roads or snowy conditions were no problem. Weaknesses included a Tupperware interior with cheap bland plastic everywhere. Btw, the reason I bought a LT1 Caprice instead of the better looking Impala SS is ride quality. The harder, lower suspension and low profile (by 96 standards anyway) tires were too much for the 70’s tech body on frame chassis. Even brand new they creamed and rattled throughout the dash and door panels.

  • @johnhall8364
    @johnhall8364 День тому

    They weren’t terrible cars but were nothing worthy of much praise. They had an awful stance that made them look dumpy. Rear brakes were a persistent problem. I’d agree that the Pontiac version seemed to be the most sorted out. The Buick had the least offensive styling and the olds version hammered in the first nail coffin for olds. The olds wasn’t a bad car but had zero appeal to the millions of existing cutlass owners.

    I agree with pretty much everything you said. This FWD GP fit Pontiacs sporty image much better than the G Body GP which had become kind of oddly styled from 81-87. I came across a 1988 Regal Custom for sale a few weeks ago. Only had 22K miles on it. Guy was trying to flip it. Exactly like the one shown at 9:34 with those ugly wire wheel covers. It was fun checking it out. I remember reading about the GM10's in the car magazines back then. It was a big gamble replacing the G Bodies with these, but I think it had to be done. Unfortunately, they suffered from the typical build quality issues of the time. Rear disc brakes were poorly designed and always seized up and as usual GM looked the other way a peeved off a lot of owners. My Dad bought a 91, 4 door Cutlass Supreme, I inherited it in 97 and kept it for another 6 years. I still think they are really nice looking.

    You're right, it did feel like it needed to happen at the time looking at the market, and the rest of GM's line. Certainly disappointing in hindsight though. From pretty timeless designs to FWD throwaway cars. Although, I believe the 3.1 and 3.8 cars ended up being pretty durable and unkillable.

    • @rporestorations
      @rporestorations 20 годин тому

      Yeah. The 3.1 and 3.8s lasted. It was necessary to finally retire the RWD models, even though they were selling, but it seems like GM just couldn't get FWD cars 100% right at the time.

    I was a 12 yr old kid when these came out. They were very cool at the time. A friend’s mom has a white Grand Prix (with white wheels) and one of my teachers had a ‘88 Cutlass Supreme. They made my mom’s ‘86 Cutlass seem primitive in comparison. I also thought they looked better than the Ford Taurus and Thunderbird. GM was their own worst enemy. Mismanagement and hubris are why development was so expensive. One hand didn’t know what the other was doing. I’m surprised it all didn’t collapse much sooner!

    I absolutely MISS my Pontiac Grand PRIX and my Grand AM's. I have owned 4 Grand Am's and 1 Grand Prix. FACT: The Buick Regal and Century never sold as many units as the Grand Prix but yet they Shut down Pontiac to keep making Buick's. That really pissed me off. I still see some nice Grand Prix on the road even now in 2024. If I had money to blow I would buy another late model Grand Prix or Grand Am. I would take care of them this time because i drove all my Pontiac's hard blew a head gasket in each Grand Am I owned and through a rod in the Grand Prix racing them around.

    I only recently noticed the family resemblance to the '89-95 Geo Metro, particularly the wagon with the hatchbacks that were styled by GM Design (the Swift sedan was derived in-house by Suzuki) . The rounded look worked better in size S than XXL. It's easier to style a small car than a big one, or at least harder to screw one up, because the packaging constraints rule out excess.

  • @nlpnt

    I'd love to know how much of the insane development cost was from reorgs and robotization being written off to the GM10 program. Roger Smith-era GM had a remarkable knack of spending record-smashing amounts of money on process to deliver meh products that look and feel penny pinched. Nothing was too expensive if the costs promised to scale, nothing was too cheap on a per-unit basis. The exact opposite of putting the money where the customer can see it.

    9:27 - Did GM get it right with these? Yes and (mostly) no. They understood the market was FWD, and they got the size kinda right. They also didn't make them all look the same. In typical GM fashion, though, all the variants were introduced with awful interior design and embarrassing quality. The powertrains should have been all-new for the money they spent on these cars, but...nah. And they were unchanged for 10 years, during which time the competitors went through 3 generations. Side note... Where was the Lumina in this conversation?

  • @michaeltutty1540

    This platform was the GM-10 Prigram. A friend worked at Magna International developing these cars. He was due for a new company car in 1989, and since it has to be a GM-10, he chose a fully loaded, top of the line Grand Prix. I had just purchased a Mercury Grand Marquis with the 351W and Trailer Tow III Package. His Pontiac listed for $3,000 more, waa slower in a straight line, could not keep up in the twisties, and used more fuel. It was also less comfortable. It also ate back brakes. Every 2 years it needed an $800 rear brake job. When he was due for another new company car he refused to let anyone he knew buy the thing.

    • @stepheng3667

      Yes, rear brakes were a poor design, they would always seize up if not lubricated regularly. Should have been a recall on that but as usual GM looked the other way and peeved off a lot of owners. Alternators were another sore spot. They did ride nice for a FWD car.

      Also, the Lumina was the first 4 door W Body, and it replaced the Celebrity in the Chevy lineup. The 2 door Lumina replaced the Monte Carlo. The Lumina's main purpose was to challenge the very popular Ford Taurus, which sadly never did, at least when it came to sales numbers. Ironically, the Monte Carlo name returned in 1995 to replace the 2 door Lumina.

    In retrospect, these were exactly what GM needed for that time. They were stylish and sold well when they came out. Yes, like most everything, they were more style than substance. No, looking back, they were not the cars they replaced but they needed not be! They had smaller, front wheel drive engines and tons of tech compared to what they replaced … but, that was exactly what customers wanted; a fuel efficient, powerful (for the time), high tech, modern, stylish yet smaller new cars most of which were wearing the same name badges of the cars they replaced which had become disappointing since the performance models of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Typical of GM, these cars were manufactured for far too long, exceeding demand, flooding the used and rental return markets, and generally looking out of date by the mid 1990s However, back in the fall of 1987, these were GMs new “dream machines”! Everybody had a favorite that they genuinely wanted to own! People had once loved the mid 1980s downsized larger models from Oldsmobile and Buick as well as the Taurus and Sable from Ford, but they were already looking dated by 1990 (and, in the case of the larger Olds and Buicks, boxy as well). These cars led to the modernization of those larger GM cars in 1991 and influenced all GM cars well into the 2000s. Today, these cars are probably just now getting some sentimental resurgence in popularity after years of being outdated, older used cars and most of them have now disappeared from the roadways. They were, much like the Ford Mustang II was in the early 1970s, the right right car for the time. In typical GM fashion of the past 50 years, they were not the best, but not the worst either! Whether or not they start to appear at antique car events as one of the next “big things” isn’t clear (but doesn’t appear to be giving the Fox body Mustangs much competition, so far). They don’t seem to still exist in a large enough numbers anymore to allow that to happen, so reproduction restoration parts may never be produced in a large enough quantity to make restoration feasible (particularly interior parts, which were much more “molded in” and specialized than previous GM cars). I have fond memories of these cars. They were futuristic and exciting in a way that even the best foreign cars were not in 1987 and, with what had already gotten to be a rare occurrence back then, they were (along with the Ford Taurus) setting the standard for styling and beating the Japanese at the styling game, if only for a short while and maybe never again.

    I like the video. What about the Chevrolet Lumina? It too was a W Body. It arrived in 1990 model year. The W bodies got better over time. They were not ready for prime time in 1988. I heard that GM was develping its W body cars the same time Ford was with Taurus and Sable, but Ford beat them to the market. I know for a fact Mercury Sable and Cutlass Supreme had that rear window design at the same time, but Mercury beat them to the market. I know the thing that set GM back was when they downsized the C, H and E Bodies and had to start up sizing them in 1989. There were otyher factors you mentioned too. This was around the time the W Bodies came out. The sad thing they were underpowered when they came out in 1988. Things improved by the second generation. They all started using the 3800 V6. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme never offered the 3800 V6 sadly. The Oldsmobile Intrigue did before it switch the the twin cam 3.5 liter V6. The Regal Limited with the 3800 was really nice. The sad thing is they never got close to replacing the Grand National until the second generation . What was interesting is when the Century went to the W Body and joined Regalin 1997. You had two Buick sedans and one had bucket seats and one did not. Regal was like Park Avenue and Century was like LeSabre. That second generation Grand Prix really took off. I like the looks of the 1988 coupe, but the 1990 sedan like the Regal sedan was missing something stylistically. I admit it was nice when the STE sedan existed. Great idea. I was pulling for Oldsmobile W Body. The Chevrolet brand got smart and came back with Monte Carlo in 1995, but got it right for 2000. I know the platfom made them money later because of Impala in 2000, and the second generation. Oldsmobile Intrigue should have been branded Cutlass Supreme. They should have had a bench seatr model called Ciera and make the Supreme the upper level as it was for years. The big thing at the end was after all the years, they offered V8's again. LaCrosse as we know replaced Regal and Century at Buick. I do not know if that was a good idea. One thing I did not like was that the 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and Buick Regal had the same instrumentation panel. They were no longer unique to each brand. I do like all the information you shared about development. You are correct the G and A Bodies were supposed to be consolidated, but as we know, it did not happen as the A body ran until 1996 model year and was still selling well. I used to think what if they put the A Bodies on this platform and left the G Bodies rear drive with a new design to better compete with the Ford Thundbird and Mercury Cougar. Ford did things right. I liked the digital gauges in the early W Bodies. I wil tell you over time in the first generation, they took options out of the cars and stripped them. Just my thoughts.

But then again, my father bought a '90 Regal brand new dressed up with the "presidential" package with the 3800 v6. GM got their moneys worth out of the W body. Last one made was in 2016.

    I was 18 when these came out. The worst of these has to be the Regal. Only because it confirmed the true fact that the beloved Grand National was done. I also remember the magazines in 88 saying it's not over yet because there's a rwd 3.8 turbo Reata coming. Well we all know that never happened. At least we got an 89 turbo TA. I hated this platform.

    I alwau thought the w bodies of all generations hit the ball out of the park with styling on the top trim sporty models. They also seem to have been better made than the taurus they were trying to compete with as I see way more of them than I do tauruses nowdays

      I'm a little confused by your comment. The Quadrajet is set on the 6 cylinder scale of the dwell meter, doesn't matter what size engine its attached to.

    I loved the quad 4 I worked at an Oldsmobile dealer and would do 2 a day for head gaskets because of lack of maintenance. I thought they were a wonderful engine and once used to them maintenance was easy. The w41 was a beast it could show its tail lights to Camaros firebirds and mustangs if they weren’t paying attention.

    You said grand prix I think you meant grand am. I never knew it to be standard in the grandprix.

    They didn't call it the iron puke for no reason. Had GM upped the compression and gave it some power, they might have had something. 85? HP out of a 151 engine is pathetic.

    96 Buick RMW owner. I liked the 77-90 box style, but I like the 91-96 whale style even more. Bigger and roomier.

    Had 2 SS MCSS, in mid 00's. My first one was a white with Grey interior, column shift, original carpet, in really good. Only used that car as a DRIVING/SHOW CAR!. I Won alot of awards indoor& outdoors car shows over about 5 years time frame. Never drove it other than car shows!. So I missed driving the white monte!! So I bought another MCSS That was a stock burgundy 85' with maroon int. With buckets, floor shift All stock! I did have it painted same color no stripes. Sold it in 2016, was a great driver!!!..

      Still haven't gotten around to it. I'm guessing it's a bearing clearance issue. Castrol 5W-50 seems to work well.

    I had an old 90s Camaro RS with the 305 that was one of the biggest piece of s*** I ever owned. 3 transmissions constantly repairing the motor it wasn't worth what it was made out of. I should have just yank that 305 through 350 in. That 305 was a money pit from hell.
