he crushed it perfectly fluently soulfully
I actually didn't know John Mayer could shred like this
Voodoo Child was also covered by SRV. Originally done by Jimi Hendrix
John is a monster but his playing just shows that Stevie was a guitar god! He is 4 steps down the ladder on this tune than Stevie 🎸
My guitar hero ❤
🔥
John comes close to the Stevie feel and playing , supergreat!
Im a Catholic Child
😂
Yer machine gun with bits other stuff nice though her plays well
Bet he can't play it behind his back.
Nice try...
Srv is one artist that is impossible to replicate. Many have tried none have succeeded
Agree, but John sure captures the spirit of his playing as well as just about anyone I've heard try.
@@alexcorll90 so so true. I'm a huge srv fan.
Hey, now we're talkin' Mayer.. This is where you're really coming from.. Don' t you ever forget!! This blues has got it all. A real MASTERPIECE. ❤
Sounds Like Robin Trower To Me
SRV IS THE MASTER!!!!😈
This is pretty Badass sounding. It sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughan and he even sings very similar to Stevie Ray Vaughan. He definitely has Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone and style down on the guitar. Stevie Ray Vaughan would be impressed. It is like when Stevie Ray Vaughan played with Albert King for the first time he was very impressed by his playing. Stevie Ray Vaughan knew Albert King's guitar licks very well and so does John Mayer. John Mayer gets a bad rap from some people and some guitar players that probably don't play as well as John Nice job John.
I notice the Jimi Hendrix Artwork on the white Strat Just as Jimi Hendrix Did. Not his ha ds though 😂. Jimi would've made a MINT partnering with Fender. He was well known for tooling around and customizing them to suit him as it was. There's a Badass Flying V he so put a beautiful design on.
1:26 a little slip up from his back up band there..😀
Doesn't sound anything like SRV. Sounds more like Buddy Guy, with band-aids on his fingers.
No one said it did? Like no shit a dude that isn't srv isn't going to sound like srv. Take the stick out of your ass and go enjoy some music.
@@BrendanOriginal I do enjoy music. Just not this guy, whoever he is.
@@whyis45stillalive whoever he is? You haven’t heard of John Mayer?
I’m not a fan of this guy but he definitely has that srv sound. Quit hating just cause your jealous he can play better than you.
@@hendrixj9901 His attack is way too weak. His tone is shallow. He plays technically well, he just has no 'soul'.
The thing about covers is when done well no comments need to be made. SRV played this differently each time he took the stage. He would be grinning if he were here to see John play it. SRV said the same thing when he was on the other end. Larry Davis and Albert King loved his versions of their songs. I bet if they were still here they would love John as well.
He’s one of the top blues guitarist of this generation. Don’t let his “pop” hits fool you. Dude’s badass! Not quite SRV but as close as it gets nowadays.
Does anyone know the date/venue that this was performed?
Wow wish there was video of this
It is a kind of weird Jimi Hendrix cover that is a cross between Machine Gun and Voodoo Child (Slight Return). The music sounds something like Machine Gun but the lyrics are from Voodoo Child (so both Hendrix songs). I assume that it really is John Mayer but IDK. SRV merely covered it - Hendrix Created it.
He covers his version.... same as when people cover All along the watchtower, some play the Hendrix version, some the Dylan version... please calm down
@@frenkie_music Right you are, my bad. He does a good job with it.

Nice version with plenty of soul. John's singing serves to show just how great SRV was...always centered and on-key.
Cool 😎 but no SRV.
Bs he's nowhere near hendrix and srv people now do not know great guitar players were
Mayer is an amazing guitar player
@@Senorzilchnzero bs
@@brucebanner3130 not bs at all you clearly don't know alot about guitars since you don't understand that he is very talented. It's easy to understand why guitarists like clapton and Jimmy page etc considers john one of the all time greatest
you can be an amazing guitar player and still be nowhere near hendrix and srv. I consider JM among the very best in the world today. but you can't listen to srv's version of vodoo child and then this and honestly think that they are of equal quality.
An artist's greatness can be measured in several ways such as their originality, songwriting, their abilities with the instrument, and so on. Mayer holds his own in each of these categories. Plus, as RedDevilDK86 said, legends like Clapton believe Mayer is a musical genius. He is respected in/out of the industry. Mayer's guitar playing is one thing, but his songwriting abilities have put him in a category of his own. Have some respect.
Damn Mayer can imitate Hendrix so well
Fun fact: this is the first show that the BLK one was played at publicly.
That’s pretty cool. Wish there was video footage
Good job but I feel you only 29 seconds at a time for srv baby
Stevie grinnin' ... oh yeah, play it brotha!
Did he exit or excite 🤔
Listen to stevie off live at the mocambo an burn your Mayer records
That’s a bit aggressive don’t you think? Mayer is a phenomenal guitarist. No reason to bash him.
The hate spewed towards JM usually stems from emotion or distaste for the type of music he puts out. Emotional feelings aside, no one can genuinely disregard JM's genius level mastery of the instrument. His musical knowledge and overskill is unmatched by 99% of fellow guitar players. Once in a generation kinda player no question. If Eric Clapton refers to JM as a masterclass guitarist, then that's saying a lot!
Interesting comment..if you played this for me blindfolded,...I would have said srv in the intro...but then would have said..wait....no.,..that ain't srv,..but.,.not bad,...but,...again....do we really need jm to cover srv...?.…..not really..,.
This is an excellent cover of my favorite version of 'So Excited' by SRV - nice job JM! And FYI, 'Testify' from El Mocambo is another great song from that show.
No shit he isn't going to sound like Stevie. But to say burn all of your mayer records lmao that's like saying burn all your Stevie records because he tried to sound like Hendrix.
I could swear this is actually Stevie.
Uau demais ....🎸👑🥰
I went to high school with John and Stevie was his favorite since he was a kid. This is freaking incredible to hear, he nailed the guitar, even Stevie’s tone which is hard to replicate
Aniston
what do you remember about john when you were in highschool with him?
Did he ever perform live at school? And didn't he work at Exxon?
stevie's tone? LOL ... only SRV has that and no other else. in fairness though, Mayer has his own great guitar playing style and tone.
This did not happen💀
THE BEGINNING SOUNDS JUST LIKE STEVIE!
A strat plugged into a cooking Fender amp will get you about 95% of the way there
@@imCurveee i know but his intensity, timing and vibrato was on point aswell
@@imCurveee Its all about attack and inflection. Anyone can play the licks but its truly about how you articulate them and carry momentum through them
Somebody get the song right, this is Machine Gun, not Voodoo Chile.
Oh but it is voodoo child. It’s just the first minute or 2 that’s machine gun
sounds like srv.
It’s so SRV , yet so JM at the same time. Such brilliant blend of personal style and influences. Even his singing voice does the same thing
♥♥3
As someone who if given one wish would consider 10 more years of Stevie at his prime (Damn helicopter crash!), this version of a talented artist only confirms to me that SRV was truly in a league of his own. Compared to Stevie, Mayor's guitar work lacks the power, grit, and seemingly spontaneous expression emotion ablaze. When listening to Stevie it is almost as if the guitar is singing lead vocals, and his voice is back up.
I'm a huge John Mayer fan, but even John himself admits that he cannot match the energy and brutality of SRV. SRV played at full throttle all the time for hours, which is extremely hard to match and takes a great level of physical stamina. You can have the chops, the soul, the gear, etc, but your body might not be able to hold up. John Mayer is more like a luxury car capable of high performance, while Stevie Ray Vaughn is an actual sports car made to go all out every time you start the vehicle up.
anyone know the song?
It's called "So Excited"
Definitely go look at Stevie’s version from el mocambo. John does Stevie great justice but ain’t no one ever gonna do it like Stevie did
Stevie was the greatest, the smoothest, vocally and instrumentally, but I give thumbs up to John Mayer for taking the chance and taking it seriously Bc you can tell he did. Anyone who dares try this ought to never try it half assed and mayer did not.
Before he hit the mainstream, John was covering SRV regularly in his shows which is how he was ultimately discovered. His chops are fire!
