Oh ! I didn’t know you needed to let it set for that long. I normally just kind of rinse it with my hot water. It keeps it hot until about 2 if i do that but I wonder if it would stay hotter longer if i did that haha
I don’t think you have to do anything but I like doing it first then letting it heat up while I do other things! I figure it’ll last longer?
Nice!! I live in Finland so raw eggs are safe to eat, I heard it's the only EU country like that because there is strict control against salmonella. In the stores I even saw protein smoothies with raw egg. Personally I don't really wanna eat raw egg whites specifically but eating raw egg yolk with rice is a must-try! Yesterday I made salt-cured egg yolks, they will be ready in a few days but I'm very excited haha
That sounds delicious! I know people get nervous with raw eggs but I mean eggs and rice and even tiramisu… 😋
I remember years ago I tried natto for the first time when I was maybe 18 or 19, I knew how good it is for you so I wanted to try it and I have always had a fascination with Korean and Japanese foods (I’m from the US). I had no issue with the flavor, I struggled with the smell and texture most. It makes sense about the texture since American cuisine doesn’t really use slimy/mucilaginous texture and is associated with foods that are not safe to eat (besides okra, but where I live it is uncommon for people to eat okra). Suddenly now I’m 26 and CRAVING natto, funny how your brain can change preferences after time passes. Thank you for mentioning about keeping each serving in the freezer, I think I made a mistake when I tried it back then because I bought it in Seattle (the closest city that sells natto, and it’s still hours away from me). I brought it home and re-froze it, then thawed in the fridge which now I understand may have significantly changed the smell and flavor. It had a somewhat ammonia scent which I don’t think is there when it’s kept temperature controlled.
Sorry you had that experience! I’ve been ok with sticking it in the freezer when I get home but it does still get dried out if it’s been TOO long in there.
@ thanks for the tip!
💛...american's are so paranoid about raw egg...i've never had any problems... this, i'd try if/when i find it...
I got it at mitsuwa but I know it’s not available everywhere in the US. I was so excited to see it here! Do you use raw with regular US eggs? I’m definitely choosy about which ones I eat raw
I also remember all the cookie dough/cake batter paddle licking I did as a kid 😆 I wasn’t supposed to though… 🤫
I have watched the pitera's face mask guide, i thought that you were supposed to rinse your face right after using the mask. Could you please help me with what to do? 🤷♀️
Don’t wash it off because that has some good serum in there! Rub it in and leave it on!
Very helpful ❤
Thank you! Planning a trip?
I like traveling by green car. It's not that much more expensive for the added luxury. Seats are bigger, better reclining, and almost never crowded so you can spread out to the next seat if traveling alone. IIRC, the only time the green car was nearly full was on the Osaka to Hiroshima run using the JR pass which was didn't allow travel on the fastest and most frequent Nozomi trains. With the new JR pass, you can travel on the Nozomi but have to pay extra fees.
I agree the less crowded is really nice!! Thanks for sharing
Hi Amy! Was so excited to see this video from you! Alex and I are planning our first big international trip ever since having Chase and now Lana. We'll be traveling with grandparents and my sister/husband to Taiwan and Japan so this video was super helpful :)
Awwww yay! I’m glad it was helpful, you all will have a blast! Congrats btw!!
Please speak properly
Anything specific?
I've always used Botan Calrose and Nishiki, and I'm wondering if it's the reason I don't like rice, going to try the more premium brands.
You don’t like any rice? Or those? They are pretty standard ones and i wouldn’t say the other Japanese rices are drastically different if you don’t like those
As a diabetic I like using both in my coffee
Any preference for either?
This is a perfect video to help me decide. Thank you! One question to help me choose... Did it ever get cooler in the cabin? if it did, how long did it take for it to cool off? Thank you in advance!
Yes it got cooler! But I’m also always cold…
I just found out that ZipAir only allows passengers over 7 in the lay flat. One of my two children is 5, which means one adult is required to sit next to the standard non lay flat and the other adult gets to enjoy lay flat with our older child. In this case, can I know if the standard (which I suppose is “economy” in other airlines) arm rest can be lifted allowing my younger child to lay down on my lap? The premium economy of the SQ arm rest does not lift up which caused my children fatigue.
I saw the person next to me lift the arm! Maybe the parents can switch half way? 😆 yes I have a friend that waited until their youngest was old enough to go lie flat to go!
@ I was thinking the parents swap, one gets to enjoy the flight outgoing and the other gets to enjoy on the return flight. 😀😀
Good point! One is shorter than the other though so be careful 😉
Thank you for bring us to this Ultimate Oahu, really gorgeous.
It’s so pretty!! And so much more I still want to do! Have you been?
Just started this video! Very informative and interesting. Please remember we are guests in Hawaii! Stay on trails, observe warnings and prohibitions, pick up your trash, extend courtesy, especially on trails and if driving. If someone flashes you the Shaka to say thank you or hello, return the Shaka!🤙🏽 For tourists like me at first it might feel ackward but the locals appreciate/expect it in return. Also always keep it Aloha! Looks great, Amy!
Yesssss great points! It drives me crazy when people leave trash or don’t treat things with respect!
Your question in the end of the video about how I wash my rice is an entire procedure of a mix from an old japanese rice chef cook master (YT: 五ツ星お米マイスター西島 豊造さんに教わる「美味しいお米の研ぎ方」 ), stumbling about some japanese forums and some, believe it or not, old animes. So I've learned a lot and so I do my rice: First 10 seconds are crucial and I "wash" the rice twice in that time using my beloved Inomata.0800 Rice Wash Bowl. I guess you know why. Then I polish the rice with my fingers 120 turns. I repeat this 3-4 times or 'til the water is clear. Then I put the rice in a pot of water (between 1.3 and 1.5 times as much water as rice and ... how my mood is) for at least an hour or over night or I do this procedure before I go to work. So I have the best rice ever when I get home. Bring it to boil in a thick walled pot (I have an electric stove) and turn off the heat completely. After 15 minutes I "quarter" the rice and flip it over. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. That's also crucial, too. Done! Just try it. It is totally worth it. Oh, I usually buy Basmati Rice, coz I'm totally in love with the smell and taste of it. Real (original) Japanese rice is hard to get where I live and Basmati is the best to buy here. Have a good time! ♥
Oh I forgot to mention: If you put more water to Basmati rice (1.5 up to 1.8), it also "sticks together" and tastes much chewier/smoother - not so "dry" like 1.3 ratio, but of course not like orig. jap. rice. Just interesting what I've learned over my past decades of life. ^-^

Love your joy and transparency! This is a huge achievement well done to you!
Thank you so much! Appreciate it!
can you buy water on the flight??
Yes but everything depends on availability- if you order a meal it comes with water.
Thanks so much for posting this and being transparent about being a YT content creator. I've toyed with the idea of trying to turn YT into a revenue-generating channel myself, but know my limitations as a video maker (as you point out, the time and expertise required to edit video!). Planning, editing, getting all the equipment, worrying about audio, etc. has kept me from tackling this as a "job." I work hard enough as a self-employed writer covering AANHPI and JA and Japan-related topics as it is..... Writing is my skillset, not being a filmmaker. I totally appreciate your efforts and your directness and honesty. Keep doing what you do! Regarding your numbers I first came across your channel after I went down the Zip Air rabbit hole a few months back, and I saw you're a kindred JA spirit. Here's to a kickass 2025 for you!
Awww thanks so much! I honestly did it for fun for so long and finally started taking it more seriously last year as we were contemplating big moves. I appreciate you and if we have a chance to collab on something I’d love that! At the heart of it we have to still enjoy doing it or any job is not worth it.

I love natto. I will eat it as is without toppings. However, if I'm feeling fancy I will serve it over rice with an egg and green onions.
Raw egg! That’s popular in Japan but I need to find raw eatable eggs here! I did find a great natto version of this though - short coming soon!
