    Hello Darren, Greetings from Plessala France. My word for the day is Serenity. Great vlog and thank you for sharing and the still photo of the toadstool was beautiful. Glad that you have pheasants around also. Since arriving back in France in late June I have concentrated on cleaning up the yard which is quite a big . Most of the yard was covered in 10 foot high brambles in places and some of the canes where around 6 years old and very thick and tough to deal with. This winter I have concentrated on filling up the bird feeders and it has certainly helped sustain the birdlife in the yard over the winter as like you we have had temperatures at minus 5. My greatest love is the Little Red Robins and the little blue tits. The yard is going to be full of bird song come the spring. Can't wait. Have a great week and stay warm.

  • @PhilG0BVD

    Darren, could the brambles be cut with a flailed machine more expense for the woodland owner but it would keep the brambles under control. May I say where you keep your mobile phone is not good. An engineer I worked with thought he was having a heart attack turned out after tests it was the mobile phone! which he kept in his top shirt pocket causing the problem! trust the family are keeping well. I have recently bought the stihl gt26 mini battery chainsaw , so useful for hedge , pruning and coppice work , get some spare batteries to keep you going , takes the grunt out of hand saw work and more practical than a conventional chainsaw for branches upto 3-4 inches .

    Hi Darren. Really love the videos and find them very inspiring. Currently learning the skills, whilst looking for my own woodland to manage. I have my chainsaw course in a couple of weeks (up to 380mm) and a bit bamboozled by the choice. Which model Stihl do you use? Any info would be appreciated and keep up the good work!

    • @AbellTo
      @AbellTo 21 годину тому

      Thanks so much, all the best with your course and woodland search. The Stihl brand has always been good for me. I use an MS261 and it’s been the best saw I’ve ever had. But for occasional use or small stuff some have gone the battery route or a simple MS180/181. Echo saws have a good reputation too and husqvarna but I’ve not used either regularly

Spring is coming and I am looking for the hedgehogs coming out in the spring. Just love them and after living in Australia having grown up in NZ where we have them, I really missed them. I'm not sure if they are here in France, (I hope so) but I am yet to see one. Have a great week and I look forward to the next vlog.😊

    I generally cut scrap timber for the wood burner with my left arm, just to balance my effort etc.... stacked a few bits up and they were within literally a millinetre of each other and juuuust small enough to fit in the burner. Guess it's just repetition.

    That is a slick trick! Your billhook is that a fiskars brand or another? Our billhooks are low quality here in USA. LOL, I whacked something using the blade like a hammer on the flat of it and the damn thing almost wrapped around the item I was wacking! LOL, I guess they work fine if you use them correctly, but I was a bit shocked I folded over this billhook I had been using for years. Started looking on ebay and such for good old ones and they are pricey! We are buried in snow here so not much getting done but in a week or so it should be game on.

  • @fraseranderson217
    @fraseranderson217 9 днів тому

    I have a problem with the billhook because it has the tendency to turn in your hand, so you hit with blunt topside or the side.its a bit annoying. I see you use your index finger to correct this.

    Thanks for that. I'm new to woodland management, having bought a 50-acre ancient oak wood with a couple of beech plantations. It's been left to its own devices for decades so we have climax oak and beech woods with not much underneath and little biodiversity. I decided to mark the trees L for legacy (protect and leave standing); V for veteran (damage to create habitat niches but leave standing); M for milling (cut for the sawmill when there's demand); and a number to indicate the year (5 =2025) when it should be cut for firewood or any other use in order to thin the canopy. I hope this helps =:D

    I have replaced several wattle and daub panels in a few 16th and 17th century houses, good work when it comes along, have also planted cider apple orchards and various other trees and it is indeed special to see them grown and baring fruit, I got my qualification, in hedge laying in about 74, and have done quite a bit since, got some to start on next week, all very satisfying but doesn't beat having children and grand children. Very best wishes to you and your family in 2025.

      Yes this is a fiskars, not available in the UK anymore but if you search for the Wilkinson Sword version it’s identical and made by Fiskars. It’s brilliant for hazel dressing and small coppice work. Hope that helps, they’re pretty rare now

    I planted oak tree in Windsor Great Park in 1976 and yes what a please , the are amazingly big. Have you tried a Japanese forestry pull saw not cheap but cut fast and last, I made a wooded saw case to hang from the belt.

    Happy New Year Darren. I look forward to your regular updates. One thing that puzzles me is that you never seem to use a tape measure when you are cutting the branches to various sizes with the billhook. How do you do it and what are the different lengths you cut to?

    Hello thanks for the video it’s so great watching you work. I just wondered whether you can do/have a video on how you built your customer/client base? Who you work for and why? How do you sell/who buys the things you make? As someone who’s just starting their forestry career and would love to buy a woodland these videos have been very inspiring and hearing you talk about where you first worked in this video made me wonder how you got from then to today.

    • @AbellTo
      @AbellTo 15 днів тому

      Thank you. I haven’t got a video about that but I’ve been planning a video or maybe a couple about starting out in coppice and also some ideas about products and selling them.

    a car trailer acts as a good anchor.if your going to do alot of woodland work may i suggest a tractor preferably a 4wd one.

    Hi Darren, Greeting from France. Happy New Year to you and yours. Great vlog, thank you for keeping things real. Look forward to a great 2025 and wishing you some great growth in your followers. Have you seen the new electric cutter out? I think it might be made by Fisckers who make great pruning tools, I'm going to investigate Best wishes and cheers for the coming year.😊👍
