Detati Art Studio is home to mixed media artist Roberta Kiphuth. On this channel I will share my art journey, explorations and art processes with the hope of encouraging others to experiment and "play" as a part of the creative and art making process. I am primarily a mixed media artist with an abstract or expressionist style.
I also teach drawing, watercolor and acrylic painting.
My online gallery can be found at www.robertakiphuth.com.

Painting over a Messy, Abandoned Mixed Media Piece
This short video show my process for trying to rework a piece that I used for a demo in a mixed media class. It was clearly not a finished piece or one that I even liked. Rather than gesso over it I decided to try to work out a more finished piece. It was too red and I wanted to soften the colors and blend a bit more together.
Although I like the end result much better than what I started with, this is not a masterpiece or even something that I would likely sell, but I wanted to see if I could push it to a better end than just completely start over.

Mixed Media: With Copper Metallic Paint
Переглядів 604День тому
This was an unplanned experiment because I had a watercolor block that had a page with some black marks on it. Of course not wanting to waste paper, I just grabbed a bottle of metallic paint and some black and white acrylic paint to do an abstract painting of some sort. After the initial stage, I realized that I wanted to add some collage, stenciling or other marks to make it more interesting. ...

Abstract Landscape - with 4 Colors
Переглядів 8 тис.21 день тому
In this page from my sketchbook I started with the idea of painting a landscape to work out using the four colors listed below. I had done some smaller sample abstracts and liked the colors together and wanted to keep the landscape loose in the style that I really like to do. Paint colors - Lukas Paint: • Raw Sienna • Yellow Ochre • Burnt Sienna (Liquid) • Green Earth Also used vine charcoal an...

This is the part of my series of small collages using BLUE as the primary color. In this video I talk through my thinking while creating two small 5" collages in a sketchbook. I limited the colors and the number of pieces as well as make sure I have variation in size and edges while thinking about leaving white or negative space. Sometimes I come across an image when I am looking for reference images for classes I teach that I just want to paint myself. With this scene I loved the light coming through and hitting the hills, even though it had dark skies. I decided to do a quick sketchbook painting but keep it loose and semi-abstract. (Sorry for the typo in the subtitles, did not want to re-render the video. Should be "b...

This is a 2.5-3X speed time lapse of a page created in my sketchbook. I wanted to try out the NOVA color paints. They are easy to mix and paint with and have strong, vibrant color. They are not quite as thick as heavy body acrylics and I love that they are in jars which makes them easier to open then tube of paint. I use the light green metallic NOVA paint in this painting to add some sparkle. ...
Creating a Mixed Media Book - Part 1

This video walks through my process for creating a mixed media booklet by starting with a large sheet of watercolor paper. This is one of my favorite mixed media projects because each spread can be it's own art piece. I also have many tell me it is fun to look through because it is different format that a 2D painting and people can touch and feel the texture on the pages. For a gallery of my ar...

This is a flip through of a sketchbook that is roughly 9 x 12. The pages are experiments in color and texture. I work in multiple sketchbooks at a time, this one I started in 2023. What does the Unalome Symbol mean? (from www.wikihow.com/Unalome-Meaning) The unalome is an ancient Buddhist and Hindu symbol that’s said to represent the journey to enlightenment. Recently, it’s become popular as a ...

Is this acrylic? I'm guessing so. Looks so fun and loose.
Yes acrylics!
you brought clarity to the chaos xxx
Thanks for watching.
4 colours and it looks lke crap. A monkey would do better.
These really did turned out great. So much fun and instructive to watch you decide what goes where. Thanks so much! Your voice is so calming. 🫠
Thanks so much I am glad you enjoy them.
Hi! It’s so beautiful! What can I do if oil pastels never dry?
I am not sure what you mean. Are you talking about if you want to frame it?
So beautiful. I love your collage papers. Do you have any videos showing you making them? I'd love to watch...
Well, I will put that on my list...thanks for the suggestion.
This was fun! Thanks for sharing and Happy Holidays! 🎄
Happy holidays!
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you create another set of collage pieces and I really love ❤❤❤❤these too. And I really appreciate your talking us through the process. Yes I agree with another person that has commented please 🙏 can we have more of this kind of video. xxxx Mags ❤❤
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you create these two stunningly amazing collage pieces. I absolutely love ❤❤❤ and adore them. I’m very impressed by your style and creativity too, so I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up two.
For awhile, it was snow in a muddy puddle.
Love the colours and composition
Thanks!
Mind blowing 😮
So beautiful!
Glad you liked it!
This is absolutely amazing! More like this please.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it. I love doing landscapes and trying different color combinations. Hoping to have more videos coming....
Wow!
I am a fan of raw umber, yellow ochre, burnt sienna and cerrulean blue. I can mix the greens. I also love the transparent red and yellow oxides which can replace the yellow ochre and burnt sienna. Thanks for your generous sharing.
I love transparent red and yellow oxides too!
when is the art world going to move on from 1930s abstract art?
I really enjoy your thought process as your painting develops. Thanks for sharing
Thanks, it's all about the journey!
Sure. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think it turned out great Do you do abstract watercolor Glad I tuned in
Yes, but I find it harder to do abstract landscapes since I can't really paint over stuff I don't like. Let me know if you would like me to post some images of my older watercolors which were abstract/expressive landscapes.
I find collage very generic usually so I shy away from it. I have to say some of these were much better than a lot. The lines, dots etc just really bore me but I live in hope that one day I might get something out of it. I keep watching collage in hope and certainly this is one of the better ones,
Thanks so much for your kind words. For me it is about the shapes and layers - making sure that ir feels balanced and harmonious.
I enjoyed hearing your thought process as you paint. I have such a hard time videoing myself paint. 😅
Most of the time I do the the art and then add the narration to the video since it is hard to think, do art and talk at the same time. :)
I watched this again because I love the green you used. Did you mean Lukas Green Earth?
@@HaynesMerittArt Yes, I may have said earth green, but that is the one.
@@detatiartthanks!
@@HaynesMerittArt I double checked the colors and I think I was wrong. It looks more like Cactus Green, which is a more muted color. Both those greens are nice though.
Looks great, but what is a color shaper?
The color shaper is the tool I use at the beginning of the process with a silicone end. Sometimes it is called different things.
“Abstract” is a confusing term for me. There’s abstract that are designs rather than painting, they look good as decorations of spaces. And there’s abstract in that all painting is an abstraction, realistic images are created from abstract representations.
Yes, it is a subjective term but I think there is a difference between abstract (as a description) and abstraction (as a noun).
I get to a point where I think, don’t do any more you are going to ruin it!! It’s turning to mud😮. But it keeps getting better 😊. Your creative vision is inspiring 😊
Yes, knowing when to stop is key....I say the same thing sometimes when I watch other artists...
Su problema es que no sabe lo que quiere, y nunca ve terminado su cuadro, desde que empezo ha pintado 4-5 cuadros diferentes tapando colores con nuevos colores sin aportar nada, creatividad no es improbisacion.
I liked the hint of blue in the green at the “sky.” It popped and would have reflected in the areas that had streaks of blue in the green. Turned out very nice, though.
Yes, it is always a balance of keeping some things and moving things forward at the same time...
These are lovely! Thanks for sharing. Off to see if you have a tutorial on making painted papers. Yours are gorgeous! 🌻
I don't have a video on making collage paper as there are tons already available. I recommend looking up Jackie Bernardi and Marabeth Quin as they do some great papers. But I may add a video later about the ones I make. Thanks!
New subscriber... If those are your "failed" paintings, your successes must be unreal! Great ideas to not waste materials. Thank you for sharing! Off to explore some of your other videos. 🌻
Welcome aboard, thanks for checking out the channel!
Why not put paste pot on your right instead of constantly reaching across the screen?
I have all my collage papers and scissors on the right and have just always had the medium on the left. I could try it on the right as long as the papers and scraps don't get stuck in it...
Do your thing, and forget the rest. @detatiart
When you began, you had no photo image or reference in mind? This was all improvised?
I had no photo reference, just the idea of a landscape type composition. Thanks for the question.
Please do more vids like this! Extremely helpful. Thanks
I am so glad you found it helpful, more are coming!
Very beautifully done!
Thanks!
Looks lovely colourwise and full of atmosphere. So thanx for sharing with us all
Glad you enjoyed the piece!
Great lesson Thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Beautiful!
Thanks! I really liked this one too!
Thank you 😊
Love the ink pieces! Something new to play with!!
Your abstract is beautiful ❤️!!!
Thanks so much!
Wonderful. I never thought 2 big boxes would look right on a page. How big are those boxes? And it is interesting that the edges that correspond to a box side are cut with a scissors and the insides are ripped. I like that look. Contained, well blended color chaos. Thanks.
They are small about 5.5". I am trying to figure out how to scale up to larger ones but keep the simplicity of the smaller ones. Thanks for you comment!
Super nice ❤
Thanks 🤗
Even without narration (which I would prefer), I'd rather not have the music. Love the collages, however.
Thanks for you comments, I will add narration to future video. As for the music, at least you can just turn it off :)
I thoroughly enjoy your videos of you creating your beautiful art, thankyou for sharing!
Thanks, it's fascinating watching you work out the placement. Finished item is beautiful.
I really appreciate the comment.
I appreciate your talking about your thought process as you go through. That’s helpful!
So happy it helps. I want to make doing collage less scary for people who may not know how to start. It is one of my favorite type of art pieces to do.
@ I still haven’t done any really, but I watch a lot of videos. I feel like I have to know what I’m doing before I start. I’m learning that you need to start because that’s the way you learn.😆
@@connieebinger6343 Yep, just best to dig in!
Sorry, but I'd much rather hear you narrate than listen to music.
Please watch the #1 video in the series as it has narration. If I narrate these all they would be similar since the process is the same.
@detatiart I have watched video#1, but these are different pieces. I'd still prefer to hear your thoughts on the how and why of what you're making.
@@SophieKae Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. Going forward I will make sure I include some narration with the videos!
@@detatiart Thanks! I really love your work.
Beautiful Work.
Glad you enjoyed it. Did you have a favorite?
Really enjoyed your line work with the white and especially your blending. Glad I found your channel ☀️
