Performance test comparing two Rupert R8:s equipped with Volvo Penta V6 280hp vs Outboard 4-stroke 300hp. The test was executed on the Swedish west coast outside of Gothenburg on August 14th 2018.

    The outboard they tested looks to be a Yamaha. It seems like with the Volvo, you get better acceleration and fuel economy, while with the outboard you get better top end speed, and easier maintenance.

    The loss of the outboard is in the T-Top.....slows down by 7-8 knots

    We have a1996 23' proline 351 Windsor with Volvo duoprops absolutely wonderful and last forever. Fast take offs and stops on a dime. Love, love ,love.

    Outboard had a higher top speed. I'm assuming they used a lower end Outboard for this test. Something like an E-tec would have been game over.

    many outboard makers used to make duoprop outboards but nobody wanted to sacrifice top speed for better acceleration. duoprop is great if you have a diesel engine and a heavy boat. but over 40 knots you just loose speed

    This is about Comparing a single prop to a duo prop. Of course the duo prop will accelerate faster.

    the comparisons are like this ... it is clear that with the DP the grip is better, the yamaha is not the best in the category, otherwise, they would not have compared it, in the end the maintenance costs of the DP, too high, wear out everything soon, especially the cones of the gearbox

    This vedio is so true. I can confirm that I did same thing .I was on a centre console 18ft with Evinrude 150 ficht ram top speed 36 knots and my friend on a Sealine Ambassador 260 with 2x Volvo penta v6 vortec 205hp each. Out of the hole the centre console was 1st and in the first 3 minute run but the Sealine continued to advance more end passes and continued Going .when I push the throttle back the sealine was 50 metre ahead

    But will the Volvo penta go 2-3 thousand hours with basic maintenance over a 10-20 year period while being used in saltwater? Maybe? Maybe not. Modern 4 stroke outboards do this on the regular.

      The inboard will last longer, as it has a closed cooling system.

    It’s be good if you showed the max revs for each engine and associated speed that way we would know if the outboard had the correct pitch.....just sayin.... 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🇦🇺🇦🇺

    I own a boat with a Volvo Duo prop and will agree with everything here except the very last statement. An I/O having more room in the boat for fun??? You guys are reaching on this one. So many great points and one stretch reduces the validity of the whole vid. Anyone whose ever been in both an outboard and a I/O boat knows that the outboard has more room in it for fishing, or lumber, or anything else you use a boat for. Even if you need a sundeck for your super hot wife... I mean, who here doesn't... one can be installed just forward of the outboard motor with concessions made for the tilt.

      After 6 blown Bravo 3x and 2xs over 4 years and 1,400hrs, I can attest Mercs are absolute complete and total garbage.

    Suzuki now makes a Dual Prop outboard , that might be a better comparison. This is like testing AWD vs RWD acceleration on a car.. the one with better traction always pulls ahead first

      And t he VP has a arch, That is not that much difference in weight! I am confident the VP still weighed more, I/Os are usually heavier than O/Bs!
