Why I’m Ditching the Leica M11 for Good
After nearly two years with the Leica M11, I’ve decided to part ways with it. In this video, I explain why it no longer fits in my setup and what led me to move on.

Vienna Street Photography with Leica M11
I'm enjoying my array of Canon VT Deluxe rangefinders. *Digital is for fun *Film is forever.
not so concerned about autofocus as I am with the camera not having an EVF.
Yeah, an M is designed to be MF and that’s fine.
I agree with every word.
Every excitement wears out and we look for a new one …..
straight to the point, short and sweet, informative, thank you
I'm looking for a homeless M11 if you would like to donate.
Autofocus these days is more accurate than man's eyesight.
It is very stupid that Leica only make M cameras with OVF, a "M" with EVF or a "Q" camera with M mount will be great. But I am very happy with my Sony "Leica" A7RV which have the 60 megapixels Sony that Leica uses, but the Sony "Leica" Camera are half the price with better specs !
not sure I understand why you need to use Leica glass. it does have some advantages, mainly 6 bit coding. but some voigtlander stuff is as good or better than the leica stuff, and vice versa. the apo lanthars and ultron 2 lenses are fantastic, definitely good for the 60MP. and I own some nice Leica lenses, including the 50 APO and 35 FLE (I own more Leica lenses than any other brand as it happens). someone else mentioned the X2D, Ive got one of those too, and it's a great camera. but that and the Q3 43 are not what I'd consider "modern", the real modern experience is a Sony A7RV or Fuji GFX 100 II IMO.
Maybe "have to" was a bit too strong, I do own VL lenses and have taken some of my favorite photos (mainly because of their character) on the M11, still I think if you're buying a ~$9k body you will eventually gravitate to buying Leica glass, its one of the main reasons to buy a Leica anyway.
Most Voigtlander/Zeiss glass is absolutely fine for use with a 60mp digital M for significantly less cash. I used to work for Leica and have used almost every Leica M lens. Leica lenses have their (somewhat) unique characteristics which you need to decide if they are worth the premium for you, but resolution is not necessarily one of them.
Agreed, some VL lenses are just incredible, but still, if you're buying a ~$9k body you will eventually gravitate to buying Leica glass, its one of the main reasons to buy a Leica anyway.
@@BernardGatt agree to disagree. I buy the best lens for the output and budget. For example the Voigtlander 28/1.5 is superior to the 28/1.4 Summilux for my purposes. The Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM Distagon is superior to the 35mm Summilux ASPH. etc.
Thats basically it! Im back on the sl2 s manually. M12 needs a high res evf otherwise there no point.
Love the SL2-S, I also use it to scan negatives 😄
I stopped after the M240 , i have now a Q43, ill but again a M if they get a real built in EVF , i dont need AF , i use MF with the Q nearly all the time
Yeah, AF on an M is unnatural, that should stay as is, but a hybrid RF/EVF would definitely be a nice addition.
Why u haven’t had these feelings by picking up the normal Q2 or Q3? Dont think its your fantastic M11s fault mate 😂
I had a Q2, fantastic camera but really hated the focal length. I’m always shooting 35 or 50 so 28 is too wide for me. I still shoot on the M system btw, I almost exclusively shoot on the M6/MP, it’s just that when I need a digital camera, I need a proper digital camera.
I ditched the M11 for the Hasselblad X2D. A photography only camera with the best colours I’ve ever seen from a digital file, an excellent EVF, the best UI ever, better AF than the Leica M (!!😂), huge built in storage, lenses at least as good as any Leica I’ve ever used (including the 35 Apo) and it’s actually cheaper…
It’s been popping up very frequently recently, it’s certainly a beautiful camera and the UI, fantastic ❤️
The Hasselblad is beautiful. I went with GFX. I loved my M11 but old age caught with my ability to accurately focus with a rangefinder.
Very very good points.
Les prix flambent de plus en plus .cela devient fou .que les fabricants se calment d autant que les appareils ne tiendront pas durant 10 ans comme des années 70/ 90
Leica will probably make the sensor optional on their next camera.
Where did you get this lenshood to remedy the no filter in the standard lenshood situation please? Link? (in Europe preferably).
It’s one of the standard Q3 accessories, the round hood, see: leica-camera.com/en-AT/photography/accessories/lens-hoods/lens-hood-q-black
Using the Meta Ray-Ban glasses for the first person POV, love it!
Thank you! It’s not my usual setup so I had to improvise, turned out well!
That was informative thanks! I love the idea of pushing kentmere this much and still getting pretty good results. I am looking to find a good solution for low light photography and it's one of the best solutions so far. The only thing that bothers me is the developing times. I heard it's possible to push by using a higher temperature instead of longer times but I need to read up on this.
Glad you found it useful! Yeah, development times are the only reason I don’t do this more often. I haven’t tried using higher temperatures but wouldn’t mind experimenting to find the sweet spot.
I love Leica and I love my Q2 but boy, Leica's really cutting back on costs here. This camera costs $600 more than the regular Q3 but doesn't come with a charger and you can't use a filter with the square lens hood. At least they could have kept the drawers and accessory pouches in the packaging!
I thnk they also really messed up not adding some level of internal memory like the M11s to further justify that price bump.
Yeah, internal memory should be standard, especially on the Q.
@simonbnyc I haven’t tried, but you should still be able to put a filter on the standard square hood, there should be enough space. I’ll check it out and get back to you. Edit: You’re right, it doesn’t fit. That’s not cool.
You can’t put a filter on with the standard lens hood. The lens cap they give you also relies on a felt material inside to hold it in place. Over time it wears off and is very easy to dislodge. This is why many people use the wider round lens hood instead.
Nicely done and congratulations on the new q3 43. With that new lens hood, what do you use for a lens cap?
Thank you 🙏 I don’t use anything for a lens cap (not sure if anything exists), it offers a lot of protection but it is bothering me to be completely honest, I do have a clear lens filter though.
No charger?
No charger, just USB C cable.
@@BernardGatt expensive gut punch!
Yeah, especially considering that it was included with the Q2. They’re taking pages from the Apple playbook.
no gharger ?
No charger, just USB C cable.
Great unboxing, huge thumbs up to the watch to. love the all black !
Thank you Liam ❤️
Hey enjoy the new toy ✌
Thank you ❤️
Great unboxing. Thanks!
Thank you Jason!
I'm a basic bitch ... portra - sorry not sorry :D
I was really pleasantly surprised by Kodak ProImage 100 this summer
Very cool. I'm super into that Gold 200 at 100! Great shots.
Thank you Jason! Its great cos its also one of the cheaper stocks from Kodak.
Ektar, Gold and Portra
Ektar is beautiful
Diggin' these!
Thank you Jason ♥️
That's it?
Interesting
I have a Kodak dye sublimination photo printer from the 90s that prints just like this.
Dye sublimation printer? Didnt realise they still existed outside of platic card printing
That's what I was just thinking. I have a dye sub photo printer from the 90s... The print quality is amazing, but they are so excruciatingly slow...
They’ve definitely improved, there are several models like this and they’re all quite cheap as well.
All that color for a grayscale photo. Feels mega wasteful
Yeah 😂 but this printer works a bit different than usual. You get the ink and paper together, once you’re out of paper, you’re out of ink.
The printing process is called dye sublimation. It uses 3 colors anyway and a fourth that is the top coat. The paper that cones with it is counted along the ini required for the number of paper aheets. So no waste
I'm curious how the negatives looked unscanned. Which had the better density and tonal range. Very interested in trying some Kentmere 400 pushed now though.
The dark areas on Kentmere really pop. You should get better range on Delta but at the cost of larger grain. Same here, the only thing which keeps me from doing it more often is the longer dev time.
Ohhhh, right off the bat, 0:12 just hits so good! Superior work! Keep on keepin' on.
Thank you Jason! ❤️
Nice shots man!
Thank you ❤🙇♂
Damn
What type of lens do you have to acquire that type of photo?
It’s a vintage 50mm lens, I don’t know the exact year. I’ll check for you though!
@@BernardGattI guess my reply was deleted, but I saw a listing that has the same exact camera with a Nikkor 50mm lens. Do you know what you did to achieve the grain too? Like setting wise on the camera?
That’s a film camera, any grain you see comes natural from the film.
@@BernardGatt So the film the Kodak Tri-X 400 has the grain?
In analog photography it’s the grain that makes the picture. It’s not a “look” it’s what captures light.
Love this! I just got several rolls of kentmere pan 400 and I look forward to pushing them to 3200 sometime soon. Have you uploaded these to Flickr or somewhere else where we could see the full files? That would be appreciated if you could, please.
Thank you, really happy you found this video useful. I didn’t yet, but I will sort it out and send you the link.
I just uploaded the files on Dropbox, check the video description.
@@BernardGatt Thanks for the upload, it is interesting to see the difference in the grain between them. I much prefer the contrast of the Kentmere 400 pushed to 3200.
Yeah, and the scans are directly out of camera. I’m sure if you play around with contrast you can get a similar result on the Delta, the biggest difference is grain. I do prefer the look of Kentmere overall. Especially on the couch shot.
The process plays a big part in the satisfaction you get with the end results. Definitely worth it. Nice shots man!
Kentmere 400 @ 3200 has been my go-to solution for all low-light situations. I always have a camera loaded and ready this way for indoor shots of the family. I have also very good experience with developing in XT3 1:1 --> 1 min pre-rinse, then XT3 for 20 min total. 1st min constant agitation, then 10 sec every minute. 1 min stop bath (Water) followed by fixing. Keep up the good videos!
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video! I’ve never tried XT3. If you managed to get good results in 20min it’s definitely worth a try!
As much as I love the square hood look of the Q series, sometimes they don’t sit perfectly square and it drives me nuts. Love that this one is an option.
I think I had the same problem until I realize I just needed to twist it in a little harder, it will screw right into the right space
Money doesn't buy taste
What’s so distasteful about it though?
@@BernardGatt Black - Bronze - Olive Green plus a red dot doesn't really work, way too many colours that don't mesh.
@@davec8153 yeah, that’s how they had it on display. I’m not a big fan of half cases either, that gold thumb rest is nice though.
@@BernardGatt Fair enough. I didn't get the case either because they block the USB-C port. Weird/poor design.
Nice vidd 👌Been editing for a while and I want to pick up the camera as well to make a vid like yours. Wondering what you think of my edit so far🔥
Thanks for your comment! Really appreciate it. I checked out your channel, you’re doing some really cool stuff! Subbed ♥️
Oh, I just love the shot at 0:34 - such cool composition!
Thank you Jason, I tried to go for movie feeling 😊
