This track has a lot of great potential. The chord progression is really good. The combination of the strong breakbeat drumkit over a 3/4 old-school-midi sound is unique and interesting. And the use of automation and sliding notes gives it a lot of character. A few things you should look at for improving the piece: - It's a little busy, and it's difficult to grab onto anything memorable. The one exception is the pattern named "plucks" which is easier to pick out and follow, because it's the only pattern that uses rests between musical phrases. It's cliche but remember that "less is more". Remove lots of notes and the remaining ones will have more personality. - Another way to reduce the busyness of the song is to vary your melodic tempo. Have some instruments that play much much slower to build a base. You could even pick one of your instruments to speed up to have fast runs and trills. The important thing is to not have too many instruments playing the same quarter notes over each other, like at 1:22. When the layers all overlap like that it can be really exhausting for a listener. - If you want to stick with the more old-school-midi sound, you should lean into it. Remove some of the effects like reverb from most instruments. Put a harsh EQ squeeze (both low and high pass) on the drumkit. Maybe replace one of the more realistic instruments with something lo-fidelity like a square wave. And use strong single-band compression like Fruity Limiter to get the levels of each instrument consistent. - If you want a more "bardcore" kind of sound, you need a lot more fidelity. For the "real" instruments, use Fruity Convolver to give them realistic reverb and Soundgoodizer to give multiband compression, also remember to give them slightly random velocity and timing so that they sound a little more natural. Imagine a real person is playing the instruments and giving them expression, taking breaths at certain parts, and playing some notes a little too loud or too quiet. - Lastly, in either case, make more use of the L and R channels to space out your sound. Whichever instrument is the main melody should be front and center, everything else should either have some width on it (you can use the free Ozone Imager plugin to widen an instrument or if you dont want to download anything use Fruity Stereo Shaper on the "Stereoize" preset) or should be sent between 70-100% towards one side. Keep doing what your doing, and remember to try listening to your track without looking at the patterns onscreen!
