The term Culturally Modified Trees actually refers to those trees that bear the marks of ancient people. This episode specifically discusses the evidence of where the bark was peeled by the people to harvest the inner bark for food and medicine. They were not cultivating or cross-breeding species, only gathering food and medicine, and the practice did not kill the trees.
