Erie Canal Lock 25

Lock 25 of the Erie Canal (aka the NY State Barge Canal) at May's Point NY. This is adjacent to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (Hence I had to stay NORTH of the Canal. I find the signal arch here interesting, as it is different than all the rest I've seen
Erie Canal Lock 26 -Three boats lock through
Переглядів 13614 днів тому
Erie Canal (NY State Barge Canal) lock 26. So far, my favorite lock. Not large, not the highest lift, not a lot going on (unlike Lock 28a), but it is cute, and quite relaxing. You have to drive down a gravel road to get there. I got lucky as when I got there (had to walk do to construction) there were just 3 boats entering the lock.
CSX At Laird Farms

CSX Train (B705?) morning of 24 Aug, 2024 at Laird Farm, Palmyra NY. Am I the only person who thinks that with a bit of selective compression the grain bins would make a good model railroad industry?

Bushnell's Basin Guard Gate
Переглядів 139Місяць тому
Erie Canal (NY State Barge Canal) Bushnell's Basin Guard Gate. One of those spots where you actually have to walk a bit to get there. Outside of NY State, and even in Modern NY State (particularly in NYC) the Erie Canal isn't much appreciated. Oh so many years ago, even in NYC we were taught how it opened up the Midwest, and made NY the "Empire State". The growth of NYC and its place in the wor...
Erie Canal Enlarged Lock 56

Erie Canal Enlarged Lock 56 This lock is JUST west of lock 28a, and is obviously no longer in use. It is behind the old store, which is currently a private house. I'd like to thank Jim DeNearing for his time, and information on this. The next few weeks will be concentrating on the Lock 28A area, which is the Westernmost Service area on the canal. We'll have some interviews with Jim, come covera...

Ralph Wilson Park Bridge Teaser
Переглядів 6642 місяці тому
In early July, 2024, the largest commercial traffic move on the Western Erie Canal since 2017 took place. Two barges carried the new Ralph Wilson Park Bridge to Buffalo. This move is still going on as I write this. On Sunday July 14, they started with one barge up above lock 32, and one down in Macedon. The tug slightly moved the barge above 32, and went down to Macedon, came back with the seco...
Erie Canal Lock 28a Boat Transit
Переглядів 2012 місяці тому
Boat transit, morning if June 22, 2024. The timeline has been compressed, and the transit actually took significantly longer. The Erie Canal, aka the NY State Barge Canal is part of the NY State Canal system. The current canal, as opposed to the original "Clinton's Ditch" or the Enlarged Canal was started in 1905, and finished in 1918. In 2024, there is very little commercial traffic, with almo...

Erie Canal Spencerport Control Structure

Spencerport Control Structure on the Erie (NY State Barge) Canal. These structures don't get nearly the attention the locks and lift bridges do, as most of the season, they are left open. Still, they are very important structures for the canal. Also included in the Gillet Rd Bridge Please like and subscribe

Nice drone footage. I was there last year, it is a really neat area to see.
Thank you. Please like and share if you will
Beautiful view of 25, thanks!
Thank you. Heading for 23 and 24 today
Loved the whole interview. Great job.
Cool to watch!!
Very cool. Keep it going.
@@burtont3773 part 4 (last part) next Sunday
Very Nice Jim!! Thank you. Waiting to see part 3.
Nice interviews. I am enjoying them.
@@burtont3773 another one next Sunday (tug Syracuse), and the week after (the dredges)
Very well done interview, and interesting. I visited this area last fall but did not talk with anyone.
@@burtont3773 part 2 next Sunday
Fun fact: if you put your kayak in at Pittsford Crew dock and turn here and go back, it’s almost exactly 10 miles. I owned the Strava segment for the return trip for several years until a rower took it from me.
Thank you for sharing!
You’re welcome. Nice watching a professional crew doing boat handling (when I lived in NYC, used to watch the tugs work sometimes)
@@carvercompanies535 btw, ever need drone coverage here in Western NY, get in touch (yes, I have my 107)
Lock 32 (or rather, the boat launch beside Pittsford Crew) is one of my favourite places to launch my kayak, and I've droned there a few times as well.
That lock is so narrow. Is that what they all were like before they rebuilt the canal?
@@PaulTomblin yes. The museum at Port Byron has a whole bunch of info, and two dry locks. Worth the trip
Btw, did you notice there is actually TWO side by side chambers there? Just closer to ABX, the green trench is the second chamber. Most of the enlarged locks (all?) were double
@@CharlesGalloI thought that might be a second lock. Those boats must have been incredibly narrow.

I always wondered what would happen if both gates were open at the same time. Japan had plans to do so to the Panama Canal in WWII.
@@TheGregstorm happened in the UK recently. I can’t find the one from like 70 years or more ago in the USA (want to say Ohio, but). Took a long time for them to stop that one. One the Erie, the would close the relevant guard gates. They actually drain large parts of the canal very winter! In the case of 28a, they would probably just make sure 28b stayed closed (upstream by something like 1.5 miles ), and let it drain. The depth of the canal is like 14 feet.
There have been at least 2 breaches in the Bushnell's Basin area since the seventies and one just four years ago in Palmyra. The BB breaches caused significant flooding. The one above 29 in Palmyra happened during the overnight and went unnoticed until the lock operator showed up for his shift the next morning. Imagine his surprise when he discovered most of his water gone from the upper level. In the BB breach they lowered the guard gates to isolate the breach. In Palmyra it was such a a relatively short distance to Macedon lock 30 that no further action was needed. And fortunately the volume of the breach was small enough that the overflow at Swift's Landing took care of it and no significant flooding issues were reported.
@@jamesdenearing1557 Thanks for that info!
I drive by that everyday, I work at ABX. I had no idea that was there. Looking like I'm going adventuring this afternoon.
Enjoy
