Dear Friends,
As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over Amsterdam, we set out on a quiet Thursday evening for a boat ride through the city’s winding canals. It's around 8:00 PM, and the remnants of a hot summer day still linger in the air. The city, though busy with visitors, has taken on a calmer rhythm, the frantic energy of the day giving way to a more relaxed pace as night falls.
We begin our journey at the Eastern Harbour Islands, where the old industrial buildings stand tall against the fading light. Passing the iconic 't IJ Brewery, a symbol of Amsterdam’s brewing history, we glide past Artis, the city’s beloved zoo, its grounds now quiet under the evening sky.
As we enter the Amstel River, the scene becomes livelier. The grand Amstel Hotel rises on our left, its stately façade reflecting in the water. The riverbanks are alive with the chatter of people gathered at bars, while small boats drift lazily, their occupants soaking in the last rays of the setting sun. The water, now tinged with the colors of dusk, mirrors the vibrant life that continues on its shores.
We steer towards the downtown area, passing by the elegant Hotel De L’Europe and the bustling Rokin, where the heart of the city beats steadily. Our journey then leads us into De Wallen, the Red Light District, where the night is just beginning to stir. Here, the canals narrow, and the reflections of neon lights dance on the water’s surface, adding a surreal touch to the ancient brick buildings that line the streets.
