Yeah, the naked cousin from glastobury 1995- there's a professionaly recorded video on UA-cam. Wonder where one could fine the rest? This was one of her best, incredible during this era- the voice, the movements, the outfits. But of course- it's all just copying Diamanda Galas. Long Snake Moan could be a Diamanda Galas song, I think I'm a Mother isn't influenced by Beefheart- it's Diamanda.

sar For sure Naked Cousin, DBTW and a third song (SHLTM, I think.. haven't seen it available on youtube in a while) were captured professionally and used for TV programming somewhere. But I've never seen any evidence that any of the other songs were ever broadcast, despite the presence of cameramen for other songs too. Which might tragically suggest that whatever else was being filmed here is no longer available. Quick note: Beefheart has a definite connection to ITIAM, as some of the lyrics in PJ's song can be found in the Beefheart song, 'Dropout Boogie'. That's not to say Diamanda couldn't also have been a stylistic influence, of course.

Oh, I was just kidding about the Diamanda- since she claimed PJ was copying her. I know how similar it is to Beefheart- I own Safe As Milk. I was just making a point as to how most people completly miss out on people who are actually similar and have influenced Harvey- who are almost all male and instead make superficial comparisons to only female artists like Smith. I've seen her compared to Kate Bush, and the two aren't even sort of similar. I've seen her compared to Bjork, once again there is no similarity other than being women. Rarely do I actually see people make smart comparisons- like Howling Wolf, Beefheart, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan. Esp. the first three albums those are the main influences. She did LATER on learn about Smith and now lists her as an influence, but her only album with a hint of Smith is Stories, and barely. Otherwise, I see very little influence of female artists in Polly's work. The Beefheart influence is so obvious in TBYML, it's just insane that she gets compared to Smith or other women. The first line of Safe as Milk is " I was born in the desert" and the first line of TbYML is the same. Teclo shares part of the melody with Her eyes are ablue million miles from Beefheart, I think I'm A Mother is influenced by Dropout Boogie. Otherwise. that album is mostly influenced by blues and country. Diamanda may of had some influence on her singing, but it's small.

sar Blues certainly, but I don't any hear country. Unless the strumming acoustic of C'mon Billy is what you're referring to. Anyway, you're correct on the reference thing. For whatever reason, when it's a woman, the comparisons usually remain limited to other women. Where as you state, PJ's influences have mainly been men. Which made the comments from Galas all the more curious given their total lack of understanding. But as she has since gone on to delete them on her own, perhaps she had a change of heart/mind on the matter. As far as her possible influence, I can totally imagine PJ's vocals on the title track to have been directly inspired from Galas.
