The Wild Calling
Приєднався 21 лип 2022
We've all got something deep down inside that defines us. Some may call it a hobby, some call it a passion, but to the rare few it's much deeper than that. It's a purpose, an innate drive, the reason we are who we are. If you took this purpose away, we'd be lost; a shadow of our former selves, and a shell of what we once were. For the rare few, this calling is their identity.
My name is Jacob Sklenar and I was born to be in the outdoors. I was born to help and guide others to experiencing my purpose. I was born to be wild. This is my life. This is my journey. This is my wild calling.

The 8 Steps to Harvesting a Mature Buck: Process Based Scouting
Here are the eight steps I use every time I go out scouting to identify where, when, and how to target a mature buck. In this video you'll see a real life breakdown of a buck bed in which I explain all the factors necessary to finding out which buck beds here, why he is bedding here, and how I can create a trap to get him!

So what do you think the magic number is to get away from a parking area or easy access? Like half mile like you said or maybe less or more ?
@@BackMountainOutdoors I think it changes depending on where you go and who hunts your area. I’d say a half mile away gets you away from most in fairly rugged terrain. Sometimes it’s 1-2 miles and sometimes you’re better off being close to the lot. The hunter sign will tell you that particularly for your area
Erbody know dat!
Here’s another tip … don’t buy over a grand of Scentlok and never use it lol
😂😂👌🏼

@@zekeoutdoors more or less than 2? 😂
I watched this a few times and listen to your podcast. You got soakers and cell cameras in deep are you going in a month before season checking the soakers or just when you hunt.? Second question you seen the bucks jump up and run confirming that good bucks bed there yet still hung cameras I’m confused on why risking more damage to the area ? I’m 4 years in on this all out mobile hunting with one buck on the wall and tag soup mostly I’m soaking in everything you feed. Thanks
@@Hopeknives13 a month before season the vast majority of the deer in my area are doing something completely different than during the season. The food sources change a bunch and they shift bedding a lot. I’m not worried about bumping deer out of there. I hung cameras in there because I’ve never hunted the area. The buck I saw in velvet would turn into a 120” or so deer most likely. The survey knowledge I got from this area told me about multiple 150+” deer I wouldn’t have known about without them. I learned that the deer use this area far more during the rut than the early season, and if I went just off of that observation I’d consider this an early season area. When I let all these cams soak for the season, they’re doing very little damage. Especially on such a central location with a scrape, the deer typically want to be there anyways and have few other options that line up the same. I don’t think bumping a deer or spooking them does nearly the damage people say it does. Keep in mind this is just from my experience, it might not apply the complete same as other areas. But for highly pressured Wisconsin swamps, this stuff has worked for me.
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling awesome dude! Thanks for replying! I’m up in the yoop hunting with stick and string in the big woods. I feel your correct on the pressure i seen and confirmed the pressure part. It’s like one sit and you can move your set another spot and still have results. They avoid the area you hunted previously but might shift yards to another trail. I left soakers for 2 years in one area now to gain knowledge on area. This year I’m going in for the kill. I should have last year but now I have 2 years of running cameras in the area. I was worried about putting to much pressure on the spot. I got my buck close to the spot. This year I’m going to pound the bedding areas with my daughter and I place her in the best spot and I’ll place myself in her wind the best I can so we have one wind. Placed mock scrapes on the down wind side of doe bedding and gaining knowledge from the bucks coming in and out. Noting wind and time and direction of travel. Any who thanks for your knowledge I love every podcast and video you post you’re a young ball of knowledge. Good luck this year !
@@Hopeknives13 thank you so much man!! It sounds like you’ve put in the work and are on track to have a killer year!! Wish you all the luck in the world and send me a picture when you or your daughter get out hunting and when yall put one down! Rooting for you!!
Is there a good website or place I can find weather data to show common winds in an area?
@@reallifehunters I think Spartan Forge has some tools that allow you to see wind data for certain time periods. You may be able to check weather underground for historical weather data and just record what it has been over the course of some time. It’s a longer manual approach that way but it’ll be accurate data

Hey its the copycat lone wolf stands that cost 3 times as much😂
@@Digglerdirk79-l4y remember, you only know what someone has told you. A lot of people forget Dan designed the original Lone Wolf stands with Andre. The 22” tall .75 (which is shorter) is literally the exact same price. No reason to spread hate man. Both good stands, and we’re all hunters helping people get in a tree and do what they love.
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling if they wanted to help people tree they wouldn't sell a stand that cost more than my fucking rifle lol. Wtf you talking about.
@@tl1635 lifetime warranty on it and every part. The stand costs a lot to manufacture. It’s not like they could sell it for $100. I don’t work for them and can’t answer for their pricing decisions but I’ll tell you that they’re doing a hell of a lot more than people just hunting🤷🏼♂️
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling Id rather not have the warranty. Unless you leave the stand in the woods it will never break.. if you do leave it in the woods it will be stolen so the warranty doesn't amount to anything.. That looks like Aspen ?
Aspen’s are in the poplar family of trees
I'd love to hear you discuss this process from the hill country setting. I have a buck that I'm pretty sure is 6 yrs old that I finally found a bedding area that he likely uses. I've had 2 years of mostly daylight pictures of him, but never had a camera close to the beds I've discovered. I haven't been able to come up with a good plan yet.
You should check out my kill video from 2022 and the hill country e-scouting breakdowns. They give a lot of similar process based breakdowns like this. Might have to make a hill country video like this
This is a duck hunting story but its a near death experience story. When I was in the military is was stationed in Norfolk, VA near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. After I got a place and got settled in, I went out and bought a 14ft long 36 in wide jon boat with a mercury 9.9 for the upcoming duck season (remember this). I had a friend on the same ship that was just as into waterfowl as I was, so we timed the migration just right and we ended up taking a weekend and went to the eastern shore. The first morning was crazy soon as the sun came up, we launched off of chincoteage island and went into the atlantic for sea ducks and brant. There were birds everywhere and all was great until we started picking up, the tide started to come in and the waves were probably 8-10ft swells and we were about a mile into the atlantic. As we had the boat packed with decoys and dead birds the boat sat pretty low in the water and we had let the waves push us back to the launch once we got inside the mouth of the chesapeake. So that was day 1 and we both said lets not do that again, we will go inland on day 2. So we hunted on the coast of the chesapeake, Saxis wildlife area to be specific. Saxis is kinda like a large marsh with a lot of channels like horicon marsh except saltwater. We were setup on this pond in a grassy area and the day was just slow the day was calm and if you know about waterfowl hunting bad weather is usually good for duck hunting. Suddently clouds rolled in and im not joking when i say the winds were like 50 mph, the grassy area was bone dry we had the boat beached on it and everything. When the storm started there was 2ft of water after 3 minutes, the boat would have float away if we didnt tie it. So we had to get out of there and we packed up and got in the boat, as we would push the boat off the bank the wind would over power the motor and push us back into the bank and kill the motor. Finally we had a small break in wind and we were able to get moving in the boat. We had to cross this little cove to get back to the launch and the waves inland were about 5 foot. Couple days after we got home I found out there was a body found where we were hunting on the second day which hit me hard because that could have been us.
That’s wild!! Awesome story Nolan it’d be cool to have you on and talk about that
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling let me know when your available
Had two bucks fighting ten yards away on my way in before daylight, then about 30 seconds another buck came in full bore and took them off their feet !! Grunted the big boy in at first light , WV 14 pt mountain buck
That’s freakin awesome man!
Do you think they enter the bedding area on one trail and exit on a different one? I know wind based but being they j hook in to watch that trail they came in on. So if they did use different trails for entering and exiting you’d have a morning set and evening.
I think they can enter on either trail and just hook in depending on the wind at the end. Their exit is much more consistent but they’ll loop downwind when entering and those trails aren’t as defined. This buck isn’t very mature so there wasn’t much for j-hooks in the area.
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling thank you. I’ve been monitoring a couple buck bedding areas and trying to dial them in. One spot they enter it late in morning once the thermals rise they enter it high to catch both wind and thermals and a cross wind from doe bedding. Basically they catch two doe bedding by splitting them in half. Thermals with one wind with the other in their favor. Neat setup for them but I got busted twice. Any who great stuff you’re putting out.
@@Hopeknives13 that can be really tough! Sometimes you gotta be on the same level as them and shoot them before they get your wind in those scenarios. But getting there undetected is the hard part! Appreciate the kind words man 👊🏼 good luck this year!
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling you to bud
If you go to Ohio this year, could you do a scouting video for there if possible? Maybe go over funnels, travel edges, and some good bedding. Similar to the video you just did in the marsh. I know it's all relatable, but for a beginner learning how to hunt the hills would be good.
I’d love to do that! Not sure if I’ll make it down for a scout trip tho. If I kill early I’ll spend an extra day doing that. I don’t have much vacation time lol
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling I understand that. I have a wedding and honeymoon this year. I’m going to try to go a couple of weekends instead of one whole week I did this past season. I’m hoping to get lucky on the first weekend I go so I can focus on Tennessee more.

Can you do this in a big woods setting?
There’s not a lot of big woods by me but I can tell you it applies very similarly. Do you hunt big woods with any topography at all?
@@JacobSklenarTheWildCalling Very little topography at all. Where I'm at I would categorize it as gently rolling hills with a bench or two here and there. I have found beds overlooking the benches but i've been focusing on clearcuts because of the edge and type of habitat they create.
@@whitewood2000 I gotcha! I’ve hunted big woods a bunch but with a lot of topography. I’ve hunted big woods without topography but not a lot. I would say they utilize transitions in cover quite a bit. Anything that breaks up the monotony is good
Great video, really well done. Love your process approach. Would love to see how you approach direction of travel in hill country.
Thank you!! I have some e-scouting videos that I explain a little bit of travel direction with hill country but I haven’t yet to do a full process video breaking down everything
The explanation on what direction he will travel in, with wind direction, and how far he may make it during daylight, and what tree you will climb and why is brilliant! Even though it’s not your class buck, that was a good spot to show your breakdown and it all makes sense. Great video!

Thanks Anthony!
Nice work! I hope you do more breakdowns like this and explain more about your buck maturity scale.
Thank you! I’ll keep that in mind. I think the #1 factor that makes me think a bed belongs to a mature buck is how intelligent the bedding is. If he’s really hard to setup on, I think he’ll reach maturity in that area
