Todoist and Google Calendar. (Benefits, Setup and Examples) I recently discovered Todoist's integration with Google Calendar and after getting it set up the way I like it I decided I would walk through my workflow and show you how to set it up. I find that this combination of apps actually makes the other better in many ways. If you are into scheduling and increasing your productivity then this...

I'm going to go into the details of What Readwise is and what it does and give you an example of how I use it within my workflow. Great video!! Pro tip, when using ANKI every time you flip a card and see the kanji and keyword, write down the kanji on paper, this helps you get better and writing kanji, and helps reinforce the meaning with the writing.

    I am against using ANKI or any kind of flashcards. There are many disadvantages with flashcards: 1. They are time-consuming. It may take a long time just to write them. Then you have to read and keep repeating until you get the answers correctly. That can also take a long time. 2. They are boring, tedious, you may lose motivation. 3. They take the words out of context. It is much harder to memorize and understand them. Flashcards are completely inefficient compared to just reading. 4. The fact that you can answer all flashcards correctly doesn't mean you have learned the subject. Why not just read a book? In the same time you create and read flashcards you could just read a book. In one hour you can read several pages of a book. In the same hour how many flashcards can you write (and read)? Flashcards are much more time-consuming than just reading. Or, if you are studying something like Physics or Mathematics, you should just solve a bunch of exercises from a textbook. Most textbooks have plenty of exercises for you to practice. All you have to do is solve them. The book author already prepared all the exercises for you, you don't need to write them, unlike flashcards. If you are learning a foreign language you should read as much as possible. Reading is the best way to acquire vocabulary. You consult the dictionary for the words necessary to understand the text. Reading is much more fun, entertaining, engaging and pleasant than using flashcards. By reading you always see the words in context. In the case of JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) you should buy specific books for it. There are books on sale that specifically help you for the test, offering a bunch of exercises similar to the JLPT questions. It is a much more efficient way to study than flashcards created by someone you don't know. Even if you nailed all the ANKI flashcards, there is no way to know if the flashcards are actually related to the JLPT. Textbooks on the other hand will base their exercises on the actual questions that appear in the exam. I have been studying Swedish for 3 years now mostly by translating song lyrics. I have translated almost 500 songs. I listen to the songs while reading the lyrics, I get vocabulary and pronunciation at the same time. It is a lot of fun and pleasant, I never get bored. I don't worry about memorization, I only care about understanding the lyrics. In the beginning I was barely translating one song in one hour. Now I can translate more than 8 songs in one hour. And I never study more than one hour per day.

      @@punchgod Yep. But it's interesting to see someone still thinking that Anki isn't helpful in 2024. Well, kind of expected under a video of a guy only learning 700 Kanji in 3 Months. You really get a good idea why DJT is as "elitist" as they are made out to be.

    Great video but Anki seems really complicated for no real reason and you have to create these decks and notes with many tabs. Maybe this is just me, everyone else seems to love the design of the app.

    Thanks for the video as I’ve been very confused by the sheer number of mobile apps related to Anki. It appears that AnkiMobile is the official app (the 25 dollars/pounds going towards development of the whole). Was that the mobile app in use in your phone? Thanks again. Cheers. Lee

    Hey do you think it’s useful to put personal stuff not business ones into Todoist such as dentist? I personally use apple reminders for that but I’m thinking of using your method. What’s your thoughts? Also why GCal?

    • @thegreatestdancer
      @thegreatestdancer Рік тому

      I personally like it for appointments to serve as a reminder. I check the upcoming view daily and it's good for seeing anything that's coming up. But if you have a tool for that then maybe it's not necessary for you. Also I'm an Android guy which is probably why I use GCal.

      I did rewatch your video now and I enjoyed it. Really good production there. Thanks for replying back. Yes I’m confused if events should be also added into a task manager. I do like Todoist but the limitation it has with different calendar + projects limit + reminders makes me think twice. I did try fantastical also but left it. Apple reminders is good and does what’s needed but it has no calendar integration or universal capture shortcut as Todoist. (All apps are good for desktops but on iPad not really which is a main device for me).yea so it’s confusing which app to use till this moment. By the way what mail app do you use also?

    After I watched your videos i'm been using and loving this integration between these two apps, it has definitely helped me. After some time using this integration I think the down side of this is that we can't connect more than one calendar in Todoist and it bothers me a little bit because I have to put all of my different tasks in the same calendar and it's not good for visualization. Anyway, thanks for your video, it was very helpful!

    NOT RECOMMENDED. While the idea behind this app is great, you cant unsubscribe from the service, should you change your mind or wish to pause it for a while. Contrary to other subscription based online services there is no way to manage your subscription yourself, I have emailed them but to no aavail, so I will have to cancel my bank card and get a new one so that they stop charging me.

    Hey, I wanted to add a recurring task "vitamin tablet everyday at 11pm". I don't this to show in google calender as it is a quick task and irrelevant to schedule. But if I delete the task from Gcal it gets deleted from the todoist also...how to make a recurring task only show in todoist and not in Gcal after integration?

    • @thegreatestdancer
      @thegreatestdancer Рік тому

      For stuff like this. I generally do them as an "all day event" which is nice just because it doesn't take up space in Google calendar. Maybe that helps. I know it's not perfect but works ok for my purposes.

  • @isabellelissel-erhard8521

    Hi Dale, thanks for your video, which brought me to Readwise. In principle I find readwise not bad but see as a central problem that web version and app each sync with e.g. Kindle but not with each other. Say: I have edited my Kindle highlights on readwise web (edit mode), e.g. to make whole sentences out of marked sentence fragments for the repeat mode, to add headings etc.. Exactly these edits, which are the essence after all, are not synchronized between readwise web and readwise app, but the original highlights from Kindle are. Another issue for me is that a CSV export only works for all highlights at once, but when reimporting, these are then no longer differentiated by books etc. (this was my attempt at a workaround: export from readwise web version as csv and then reimport into readwise iPad app). Do you know a solution for this maybe after all? Thanks a lot, Isabelle

    I don't know why it was so much harder to learn the kana characters for me, but it took me a whole week to really get those down. I learned so many more Kanji in that same time. I guess remembering the idea of things is easier than random sounds.

      For me hiragana and kanji is fine. Learned all joyo kanji in a year. But katakana haunts me though, not knowing the characters, but reading it out, super unintuitive, especially if it's some rare loan word. Take solace in that many japanese people struggle with that aswell at times.
