'Il tenero momento' from Mozart's Lucio Silla by soprano Greta Feeney

Thank you for watching my video! This aria was written by Mozart, and first performed in 1772 when he was still writing for male soprano castrato. It features specialized techniques like mess di voce, sforzandi, and fioratura that require me to adapt a bit. I have to lighten up to sing this way. I'm grateful to Maestro Nicolas Giusti for being my coach, and for encouraging me to start singing a...

Thank you for watching my video! This is probably the hardest aria I have ever sung. Conservatively, it took me about 40 hours to learn and get up to speed. I think of that as an entire workweek, but my student (who is 11) told me this morning that this means it took me less than 2 days Lol! Anyway, it's incredibly athletic and rangy with the 'goat trills', etc., which no one teaches you how to...
'In uomini, in soldati' from Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte by soprano Greta Feeney

Thank you for watching my video! I LOVE this aria. It pokes fun at the empty promises men make regarding fidelity, but somehow it's not in the least bit cynical. Here Despina suggests that women should 'pay men in their own coin', and make love for their own vanity, their own pleasure. Mozart endows all the maids in his operas with wit and charm. They are usually the smartest and most resourcef...
'Thy hand Belinda' from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas by soprano Greta Feeney

Thank you for watching my video! In this scene in PurcelI's profound 1683 operatic master piece, Dido, impales herself on Aeneas' sword after he makes love to her and then leaves her on her private island in the middle of a sea of loneliness. This sentiment echoes that of so many operas, especially Madama Butterfly, whose heartbreaking suicide is rooted in the Japanese Samurai ethic- 'Those who...
'Ombra mai fu' from Handel's Serse by soprano Greta Feeney
Переглядів 5365 років тому
Thank you for watching my video! I feel that this is on of the most sublime arias ever written- it shows Handel's genius in how he can create the most noble and heavenly mood with just a few instruments and even fewer actual notes. The first phrase is terrifying because it is so long, but I was diligent about practicing it only as slowly as I could and then the duration increased over time. It ...
