Wild Camping Scotland | Passing Place
In this video, I am away camping in some rare warm summer days. Spending my time looking about the undergrowth finding little creatures, enjoying some whisky, fishing, swimming etc, in between the dreaded hoards of midgies (wee biting flies) in the South West of Scotland.
Ye need to get yersel oot n aboot when it's warm in Scotland.. it might be all ye get!

I am up in the moors behind the village I grew up in with a minimalist set up (Axe, knife, saw, stainless steel mug, titanium canteen set, army poncho, army wool blanket and enough food for a few days) all packed into the 58 British army webbing system. With no real plan of how long I will be out for, and just see how the flow goes. I made a bushcraft style bed for the in some spruce woods, one...

      Thank you kindly. Still filming and editing on my phone.. maybe one day I'll have some cash to invest in a decent camera.. I caught 5 fish all similar sizes that day, and didn't get a bite the test of the time ahha.. just right spot and time fir it Aye, the woods were alive with little creatures.. midgies were a plenty ahha.. but, didnt find a single tick! Which made the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.. I find midgies muuuch more predictable and easier to manage.. Lookin forward ty yer next video mate.. the last one with the canoe was a cracker.. iv not been out on mine in a while now.. hoping the wind and rain will let up for a wee venture..

    Great stuff. As a kid and into my teens I used to live in 58 pattern webbing, you simply cannot kill it, if packed correctly it turns into a comfortable chair when you sit down. My only regret is I gave it away. Glad you are using it for camp outs.

    Looks like I've found my new favourite channel. Love the simple and natural approach you take to camping and your gear looks well smart, especially the webbing. Was looking at the US LC2 webbing myself but might get the one you have instead. All the best from Lancashire 🌹

    • @Ronoc_finn
      @Ronoc_finn 2 місяці тому

      Welcome to the channel bud. The 58 is a crackin system to have. Pretty simple, modular and well made. The quality of the stitching is fantastic, which I have found to be a big let down in most modern gear. It's been around fir a looong time and it looks like it has had quite a life before I got it. But it still holds up. Having all the weight so low down and close to my body makes walking feel more natural and more balanced over rougher terrain One thing I keep reading about is how heavy the material gets when it's wet, and how it will "tighten" the wetter it gets. I havent found that to be the case yet, but I do my best to keep it dry.. I accidentally ordered a new cadet belt, which was the only disappointing part. I had to reshape the metal clip and really work the material before it felt comfortable.. but other than that. Very happy with it I was interested in the PLCE, ALICE, MOLLE systems.. and i think they do have some features that this system lacks due to its simplicity.. but, the simplicity and lack of plastic is what I really appreciate about it. Different strokes! Glad ye enjoyed the video mate! Cọnọr

      @@Ronoc_finn It's definitely the case that things aren't made like they used to be, if at all! I feel drawn to all things canvas and metal buckles are certainly preferable to plastic. I try to minimise plastic when it comes to my camping gear as it feels out of place in that environment. I'll invest in the 58 webbing soon and pair it with my 20L pack for summer camping. Nice one for the reply, look forward to more content from ya 👍🏼

    Great video mate love the basic gear ... The 58 webbing brought back memories and made me comment as a wee tip, have you tried strapping the poncho across the top of the kidney pouches? It will stop it bouncing about! Great work though look forward to seeing more.

    • @Ronoc_finn
      @Ronoc_finn 2 місяці тому

      Thanks mate! I haven’t experimented with it set up like that yet.. I’ll give it a wee shot. I like the weight being so low and close to the hips but I’m always open to changing if there is a better way. I think the next time I’m out, it’s going to be too hot to be wearing all those layers on the move. So i was thinking of rolling up the jackets and popping them on top of the kidney pouches.. I also really appreciate not having the sweaty back from lugging a pack. Was there any wee tips and tricks you picked up from using the 58 webbing? I love the gear, it’s been used and abused and still feels bomb proof, but wondering if you found they need any specific maintenance so it stays that way? Thanks for the feedback and I’m glad ye enjoyed the video

    👍👍👍 .. nice .. and it brought back some memories. Whilst serving in the SADF (South African Defence Force) from the late 60's into the 80's, we used the RSA version of the '58 Pattern. Very practical kit although, if the Web Belt was not tight around the hips .. the hips then taking a large % of the load, the load was then transferred to the Yolk which tended to make it uncomfortable on the shoulders. This was mostly the case because of the the amount of Ammo and Water that we carried, we were thus forced to make the Web Belt larger than the Waist in order to be able to accommodate the number of Pouches and Water Bottle Holders required. If required, for extras .. water and food, I carried the little Patrol Pack on my back. Back then, the Plastic Two Litre Coca Cola Bottles were absolutely 'Bomb Proof'. We used to remove the black plastic bottom flat base (it was just spot-glued on) with hot water, leaving the rounded bottom. This made for easier storage in the kit. Apologies for the diversion .. just felt like sharing it with someone 😊. One tends to overlook the older gear, thinking that 'newer must be better', which is not always the case .. especially if the older stuff has already been paid for and tends to last. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

    • @Ronoc_finn
      @Ronoc_finn 3 місяці тому

      Gid to hear from ye mate.. Yno, I am really enjoying the gear from that time. I found most modern equipment, as light as it is, just doesn't feel hardy.. where as it's impressive how tough and resilient older gear is, and how much you can do with good simple gear. Other than being a wee bit heavier when wet.. I really can't beat it for this environment.. It's gid to hear from someone who has used the gear extensively.. I'm 6'6" and 120kg odd.. it would be handy if the belt was a bit bigger. At least over the jackets. I have yet to find that weight distribution you are talking about. Its wasnt uncomfortable.. but i know it could sit better. Will see what could be done Do you have any standout kit you could recommend? Especially when it comes to damp environments.. And do ye have any advice for maintaining that rubberised coating?

  • @ulperformance4087
    @ulperformance4087 3 місяці тому

    I believe that your gear rig is too low, sitting over your butt. Were you to modify it so that you carry a portion of the load at the upper center of your back, above your hips and put some critical gear - gear that you deem needed quickly such as a medical kit, fire kit, balaclava, folding hat, energy bars, gloves, etc. in a pouch at your chest, I'm confident you could move faster with less fatigue and greater comfort.

    • @Ronoc_finn
      @Ronoc_finn 3 місяці тому

      I agree with what you are saying there bud.. The issue I have is the belt won't wrap around my jackets when I am layered up like that. So the rig will generally need to sit on my jumper layer with jackets on top. So, if I wear the rig too high with this particular set up, the jackets will tend to ride up and become quite uncomfortable.. I am 6'6" and around 120kg, so most things like belts etc are already on the small side and need a bit of customisation, one way or another As it moves into spring, I'll begin to wear less clothes and definitely lift the webbing for a more suited fit.. I have never owned a chest rig.. but the surplus bits n bobs have caught my interest in the past. Do you have a model yea could recommend?
