Tedding Hay with the Sitrex RT/5800H tedder
Tedding hay is crucial to the dry down process of making dry hay. By "fluffing up" the swaths from the discbine, slows air to circulate around the freshly mowed grass and speed up the drying process to allow us to achieve the goal of around 8-16% moisture content. This is our first season with this Sitrex tedder ... an upgrade from our older New Holland 163 manual fold tedder.

The 4066R is repaired and back in service! And the work and abuse will continue to try and finish out this hay season! And then maybe start looking for a larger tractor to ease the pain on the 4066. John Deere 5 or 6 series might be in play. Remember ... you aint farming if your not breaking stuff!

    My Dad and I ran a custom hay baling operation back in the 60's and 70's, He bought a new New Holland 256 rake, basically the same as you have, and it came with the rubber mounted teeth. The rubber ones were designed for those farmers who raised all alfalfa hay and they did a great job raking it up. We eventually changed all of ours out to the spring tooth ones after the rubber ones cracked and broke off. The spring tooth ones are much better to rake heavy thick hay than the rubber ones. One tip you might consider, after making the first round and then turn around to rake the second side together, you need to turn the completed windrow completely over on the second pass. Your baler will leave the hay that is laying under the windrow if you don't turn it completely over. The reason I know that is because I have raked a lot of hay, we ran every day it wasn't raining.

  • @mikecubes1642

    the spring teeth are much better and cost less. I have a rake that had all rubber teeth on it and right after I got it 1 fell off and was sticking in the field so I stopped and picked it up and checked the others. I found 11 more bad teeth and pulled them off. then put all new spring teeth on after that. also the rubber teeth hold dust between the hanger and the bar and make the bar rust and break. I have fixed a lot of them for other farmers that were rusted and broke on a bolt hole because of the rubber teeth. they are the best rake made

    • @Schafferfarms

    Sweet disc mower, the impeller conditioner helps dry faster than the rollers

    • @Schafferfarms
      @Schafferfarms 3 місяці тому

      Yeah was thinkin about gettin one to help with dry down time!

    • @edwinschwartz2472
      @edwinschwartz2472 3 місяці тому

      Yes I have a disc mower conditioner with impeller. It takes more horsepower than a roller machine, but it saves sometimes a whole day’s curing, which sometimes because of the weather can mean the difference between a good quality hay crop, or a poor quality crop. Also rollers are of little help in 2nd or 3rd cutting of grass hay. The impeller bruises the blades of grass breaking down the wax coating which gives a much shorter curing time than with using rollers.

    Nice tractor. How does it do in steep terrain? I have a 3046r with loaded tires but no cab right now. Love it, but wish I had something bigger and with a cab to compliment it for snow removal and days when I want to sit in the AC. The 4066r has been on my wish list, but then a skid steer with tracks is another potential route to go. My property is mostly wooded and has a decent slope to it. Thanks!

      I do have very steep slopes on my property and can get up and down there no problem, especially in the A range. I pull a 630 moco Discbine up and down and she gets the job done! I do try to avoid side sloping because it’s sketchy as hell !
