    what why doesnt this have more than 100 subs ? this looks so high quality wtf its got a great visual style, im already hooked on the lore, and clever usage of input methods is exactly what im looking for in games nowadays. the masses truly have no taste

    The Lackluster Character Models and Janky Animations might set a lot people back from this rather potential game. Needs a fix while the iron is hot

      Oh no, super sad you see it that way. We poured soooo much love and care into creating these characters so there certainly wasn't any lackluster approach. We love them, sad you don't like them. We will be improving everything we can as we go along so hopefully more people will find something they like. Take care. 👍

      Amazing! Very interesting, it does relate but is a coincidence. What is your language? The writer of our project is from a city called Belfast which is very divided both religiously and politically for many years, and ONAR is a fictional name for the planet in this game where people are born into division and fight based on that division, the writer Kris Kelly is exploring some of those real subjects close to his experiences in the story of ONAR which also touches on the themes / words you have mentioned that mean ONAR in your language. Excited to hear what the language is.

      @@onaroffworldfighter That's what i thought too, a fighting game called ONAR, and i thought, this can't be a coincidence, but damn. I'm from Indonesia btw, so it's Indonesian language, and i understand it's commonly unknown, but maybe if i say Bali and The Raid movies, then it's probably more relatable. And nice plot, the background stories alone would be fire. Excited to know much more of the story from a mind of North Ireland writer. And the developers are from where? Not same country? ONAR have instagram page btw?

      Hi ROcheater. Yeah we set the channel up to show people our game. We have been developing it for a few years and it went through many names and styles before we settled on what we wanted to put out there. Its our first game, and we are small team of 3.

    The game looks very interesting! I love when games innovate core mechanics! The art direction is also superb! However, i gotta say your animations need much work. It looks very janky right now. The feet are constantly going through the floor and the hitstops are distracting. The crossfade between the animation states is also a bit jarring. I only say this because i wish to see your vision fully realized without these things impeding on your success. Best of luck.

    This looks so awesome, reminds me of those fights in Dune using the personal shields. I'm no developer, just a fighting game player/viewer so take my comments with a bag of salt. 1. I think the heavy hit stop should be reserved for larger beefy attacks. Or maybe just less of it for average strikes. 2. different hit sparks colour or type could show the defender which side he is being hit on when the opponent strikes the shield. 3. I think you should play more to your strengths with the unique ideas of depth guard and shields. Work it into the gameplay more. Maybe something like separate shield HP for each side. So if the opponent is favouring one side more, its obvious where u need to be guarding. 4. Lore wise, since it reminds me of Dune, maybe incorporate small hand weapons like energy daggers, or fist attachments for variety while still keeping your hand to hand style. Keep up the awesome work, wishlisted on steam.

    The directional blocking mechanic reminds me a ton of the way combat works in For Honor. This looks like it has immense potential, I hope to see more as this develops!!

    This looks awesome! I have a suggestion: This game looks like it could have a couple characters that do different versions of Wing Chun: Traditional (even stance) and modified (what you usually see on TV and in games). I think it would really look cool to see them together on the screen.

    I'm a grappler main in all the games I tend to go for. I've noticed that there is no jumping, which is concerning. Normally grabs are avoided by jumping. I'm worried that no jumps will either make grapplers way too strong, or the grabs will have to be weak. EDIT: I kinda hate that ring out mechanic, with how its currently implemented. I want walls.

      Thanks @VaSoapman I agree, we are currently developing a mechanic for grappling in which you can cancel the grapple. Once its feeling good I will tag you. Yhe game is free to play so feedback from people like you is invaluable.

      Yeah ring out can be a pain, we have tried to give people a window to get back in and we have made it flow straight into gameplaybso there is no waiting or break in action. Unfortunately walls where just outside our capabilites as a team. Fighters kept getting stuck or glitching. Maybe in the future as we develop and learn.

    Thanks for making this! It gave some good insights into what you have currently. I had some questions after watching this: 1. You have attack speeds on display but how do we know how this relates to the frame data? (what is safe/punishable) 2. How do you block fireballs if you can only block left/right? 3. Will you be implementing any sort of parry/armor mechanic? 4. Will there be throws? 5. Around the characters name there are some bars that seem to pertain to left/right attack. What do they mean? 6. Does blocking/dashing/side-stepping drain stamina? 7. Is the ring out mechanic a punishment or reward? It seems to stop all of the momentum for the winning side. 8. Attack start-up and impact animations could use some work (imo). It is very difficult to tell what is happening in an actual fight. The visual feedback needs improvement. 9. To my eyes, all of the attacks come out instantly. There doesn't appear to be weight or wind-up to the attacks. 10. If you had the budget, what would be the first thing you would implement? I hope this isn't too critical! I'm just a person who enjoys watching fighting games at a professional level and these are questions that popped into my head while watching the walk-through.       Thanks! @Yhoshua_B these are really amazing comments and questions. I'll try and answer. 1. Yeah, the value is a multiplier so if an attack was 14 frames when at 1 then it would be 28 if the stamina was low and the value was 0.5. But I also think you are saying this is maybe too hard to calculate on the fly. So we will look at presenting this data better or reconsidering. 2. You can only dodge fireballs they can't be blocked. As part of play testing we are trying to evaluate if this is fun. So far seem to be..... 3. Yes, parry is on our list, I LOVE third strike parry. Looking at this possibly. 4. Yes, we are currently testing this ahead of a future build we are trying to find a satisfying and intuitive cancel to accompany it. 5. That's stamina for left and right which seems to work as way of forcing a player to mix thier moves. 6. Currently no. But this a good idea. So will try. 7. Ring out punishes any fighter put of the ring more than 1.5 seconds. Gives you time to get back in. 8. I agree this is one of the challenges with a small team. Noted. 9. This probably could do with addressing the animation, as all attacks have a warm up period where the attack colliders aren't active, heavier hits have a longer warm up so riskier to use, and you can't cancel an attack mid attack so one needs to be careful when selecting. 10. More budget for us would mean more focus currently I am financing the game by the film project I work on to support development, this is just the reality of an indie journey without a publisher / VC. The plus side is we can take our time, make mistakes then improve as we go. Gives us time to hear great feedback and questions like yours. So thank you.

    There is a catastrophic lack of 3D Fighting games right now, so I sincerely hope that you will be successful. Just don't forget that animation is one of the main, and maybe even the main, aspect of a quality fighting game.

    This looks sick. Hey so, can you provide a process video for how you made the assets of the cinematics part? I want to support this project, but it'd be a hard pass if you're using generative AI.

      @adamwlove Thank you for the kind words! Will absolutely do a making of video, and one focused on the cinematics. Before making games I worked in the film industry and for our ONAR cut scenes I use Maya, sometimes Blender, and sometimes Houdini for like the space shape smoke and things like that. I basically made a poor mans version of Meta Human in Maya so I could create different characters. I sometimes render in Arnold and sometimes Octane, and I use Rokoko or Cascadeur to animate, though most animations are done by Kyle who does the combat animation in game too, once rendered I comp in Nuke or AE then put them together in Davinci Resolve and make some sounds in garage band or download from artlist.io. I have experimented with the video AI stuff, its very impressive, but currently it would take quite a bit of luck to make coherent cut scene or a cut scene that wasn't post rationalized. Stable diffusion is kinda cool as it could improve render times, I have tried that, as rendering can be only for the rich and big studios, so the AI can help a bit there without taking away from your creative human vision. I have a script for the story so I don't have that luxury randomly stitch images. I'll make a walking though of my storyboard / Maya / render process.....

      Thank you @AndreOliveira-qq5nk as I was explaining to another person commenting I am a big fan of older fighting games, starting with my first 'the way of the exploding fist" on the ZX spectrum........ We are only a team of 3 so we must do something different as we cannot compete with the BIG AAA games even if we pick only a fraction of what they offer. Lore and content is big on my list of to do's..... And look forward to sharing the story. Again thank you for the kind words

    The hit-stop looks gratuitous, and the sharp snapping of the animations seems janky. Frankly, this trailer gives me no idea of how this game actually plays :/

      thanks @wewserlethaldude9 , yeah, you are right we have a hit stop and its possibly too extreme, we are at the start of early access so we going to be tweaking all these values so we can improve. Maybe one of the future trailers or dev walk throughs we have planned will give you a better sense of gameplay. Thank you for the feedback.

    Those video cut ins feel so generic and out of place with the gameplay. Were the generated by an algorithm or something? Either way, please consider focusing your work on the animations, those are incredibly crucial for a fighting game and these look really rough at the moment. Good luck!

      Thanks @paradiseegg2111 - No not an algorithm, created in Maya, Blender, Houdini, Unity, Nuke, AE, Davinci, Rokoko, Cascadeur, being the main apps...... I have experimented with Stable diffusion to improve render times, I think this is making some of the rendered look like an Algorithm as you say, so I am going to tone that down thanks to the feedback. Only rich poeple and big studios have render farms, so we need to think outside the box to keep our creativity and vision for a project alive. So I appreciate the feedback. I would agree there is a bit of disconnect between gameplay and cinematic that I hope converge soon..... I am going to be posting my art workflow from concept art to final render in Maya soon.

    I can see the blocking system being a point of contention for some. Maybe changing it to a high low party system with back or neutral being block would offset that though There also seems to be some conflicting ideas here. The hand to hand looks promising but the lack of any clear sidestepping mechanic leaves ranged attacks open to abuse if it's as shown here. All in all it's interesting though, looking forward to seeing how it develops

      I know, it will defo will be contentious, you are 100% right about the risk, you only have to look at the comments left by people to see we will never please everyone and some people just like a good out insult..... Some people HATED the street fighter III parry / block mechanic, which I love!! We do have side stepping but again you are correct we haven't highlighted it very well here and all is subject to improve asap..... We love fighting games, and we love comment like yous as we value the feedback (if constructive like yours) So Thank you.

This is a early access game, so the good news for you is that none of the budget has been spent on the story, all has been on the development of the game play. I (one of the 3 person team) create the story outside of the budget for pure passion and a love of scifi. I will pass on to the other 2 team members that their hard work and effort is atrocious. However, at the moment, all our focus is on the gameplay and we are doing our best to make as good as we can for people, especially those who have offered us encouragement and feedback.       Haha. Used to play Rise of the Robots on the Amiga. I remember the graphic being amazing at the time. Game play was a bit rough though. 😅

    I really would see side stepping like Tekken. Tekken is one of the best ever, it’s very understandable to take from it. Also ground game stuff iliie wake up attacks If you wanna go crazy. Nopefully no super armor supers, or armored attacks for everyone. This game looks like it needs a bear. I got clips on my channel.😂

      There are 3 of us making the game and we all LOVE Tekken. There is a side step in ONAR by tapping up or down. Will try and highlight it in a future video. However the Tekken side step is pretty amazing so the bar is high.

    I would be curious to know the history behind the game and the fighting games you grew up playing. At this time, I can't tell where your inspirations come from. Upon first glance, I'm reminded of Destiny (design), Absolver, and UFC fighting games (in terms of mechanics/gameplay). Regardless, great job so far! I'd be curious to hear what your development plans are for the future.

      @Yhoshua_B Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. My love for fighting games dates back to the "Way of the Exploding Fist" on the 128k ZX Spectrum. I think that's where my use of Cyan and similar limited pallet colours comes from. From there was a big Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct and Street Fighter 2 fan in both the Arcade then later at home on the SNES and the the Game Gear. Once the PS1 came out I played a lot of Tekken, Virtua Fighter on a friends Saturn, then got into Soulcalibur on the Dreamcast. Outside of the big 4 fighting games that dominate the fighting game market (which I play quite often) I think the games that inspired me the most while developing the game are, Rival Schools, Tekken2, Virtua Fighter 2, Street Fighter Third Strike, and KOF 98. I play them almost daily. I love the parry mechanic in Third Strike, its what inspired me to reconsider the blocking axis to depth rather than away. And I test the game on the Steamdeck, it reminds me of the gamegear experience from child hood then I also test on retro controllers and Xarcade sticks, I want it to be a contemporary game with a touch of retro in its feel. Regarding design, I really love the Alejandro Jodorowsky scifi aesthetic and Andrei Tarkovsky style of colour and lighting, and often look at fashion shows for design ideas. The team size is small, its only me doing 99% of design, and I work with 1 programmer and 1 Animator, they specialise in thier fields and I sometimes do some animating and coding when I am not designing so our last 18 months have all been about the playability of the core archetypes. In the future I want to expand on the supporting story and grow the roster of fighters and arena.

      :) Thank you for asking. We are 3 person team, 1 Generalist (Kris), 1 Programmer (Gary), 1 Animator (Kyle). We set out to make new fighting game, keeping it simple to begin with, care about the core mechanics and gameplay and supported with a compelling story. We have the core archetypes complete, and playable, we are taking to GDC this month to see if we can secure a publisher to help gain exposure. Do you think we should do vlogs explaining more.     The laggy trailer should be deleted and redirected to this. Although the concept looks interesting, the animations might need smoothening and there might me light sparkling effects adjustments. Tekken 8 already got a note for it's hit effects being so flashy that it is hard for an average person to keep track on what is happening on the screen

      Thanks for the feedback. I agree, animations do need improved, we are a team of 3 people making the game and really value this sort of constructive criticism. We have already improved 20 of the animations since posting this video, we are attending GDC with it and wanted to get some responses early so we could adjust before showing publishers. It's early access and we will be focusing on polishing our 4 main archetypes before adding anymore characters. I though I should leave our outdated videos online so people could track our progress and see that we listen to the fighting game community. But maybe you are correct. Thanks again.

      Thanks for the comment. We have done a pretty poor job of capturing our game, but also we are only a team 3 people so we have limits to what we can achieve. So I think there will be plenty of people used to games that have been made by 100s of people with budgets stratospheric compared to ours..... so if we want to make a game we are gonna disappoint a few people. 🤷🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️ but really appreciate your comment as it's helpful as we finish the game. ❤❤
