The lyrical content itself is enough to give you goosebumps, whether or not you are aware of Jonathan's tragic loss. The personification of grief as "it", a child, during the verses, makes it all the more harrowing - this feeling, this ghost-like child, is ever-present and has a life of its own that the vocalist is separating it from himself to try and nurture it and avoid the pain it brings him. "Can You Hear Me" was originally revealed on 14 May 2015 on the UA-cam channel of music equipment company Antelope Audio. The song was initially intended as a solo work by Davis but was eventually included in "The Nothing" after Nick Raskulinecz heard it. Davis told Kerrang: "That was originally one of my solo songs, but the band took it - just like "Take Me" on the last record was one of my solo songs. Nick loved that song, and the band went back, and did it and I really like how it came out. That's one of the songs with 20-something vocals on it. There are so many harmonies that it's like ABBA or some shit. I love it."

According to guitarist Munky, the title of the song was based on the death of Deven Davis, Jonathan Davis' wife, after a considerably long battle with drug addiction. Many songs on "The Nothing" deal heavily with loss, reflecting Davis' experience with the death with his wife Deven and his mother in quick succession. This is lyrically alluded to in "Finally Free", hinting at someone dealing with what has been described as "perhaps the deepest, most confounding loss of his life". The song is dedicated to Deven and her battle with addiction, serving as an elegy and a celebration of her life due to being "finally free" from the torment. “It’s totally relating to his wife and her death. She went through so much. Him and her together as a family went through so much, and if you know anybody who has battled with addiction, like I have and like so many of us in this band have, you sometimes feel like you can’t shake those demons. "The Seduction of Indulgence" is a metaphor for the temptations of life that can lead to unhealthy habits and choices. The lyrics describe someone taking a risk, being confined, and feeling overwhelmed by the desire to indulge in something. At just under two minutes long, this could be viewed as an interlude in the album, built on a military style drum tattoo and a whole bunch of unsettling electronics. Davis croons for the first minute before seething ‘Killing me, raping me, touching me, stabbing me’ under his breath as the song climaxes. Short, and certainly not very sweet.

"Idiosyncrasy" is an exploration of life's struggles, as Jonathan navigates through dark and unforgiving times. The song speaks of pain and frustration, as he is forced to confront the futility of his attempts to make sense of his reality. One of the heaviest songs in the recent history of Korn’s back catalogue. Starting with a classic sounding, swirling, mud thick riff attack from Head and Munky, it’s an intense, smash in the face to open the song. Jonathan Davis then enters and quickly showcases the death metal growl he has been perfecting over the last decade, before the catchiest of choruses knocks you sideways. The track's real MVP moment is definitely the mid-section where an industrial riff batters you and JD winces ‘God is making fun of me, he’s laughing up there, I can see’ through gritted teeth.

Echoing the propulsive riffs of songs like "Rotting in Vain" from last album "The Serenity of Suffering" and peaking with Jonathan’s rapid-fire vocal delivery in the bridge, this song is a candid document of grief. It’s like hearing a diary read aloud, as Jonathan asks the difficult question: ‘How does one start healing, the darkness is revealing.’ “That’s one of the questions in my mind,” he tells us. “You just take it a day at a time, it never really does go away. I mean, now I don’t cry every day. I was crying every day forever. But now, a lot of crying, and that helps at least get whatever’s out, but it never really, truly goes away. It sucks.” "The Darkness Is Revealing" poignantly explores the journey of self-discovery, healing, and the necessary pain that comes with facing and accepting one's hidden emotions.

Davis told Kerrang: "'Cold' was about that dark feeling. It's like I'm channeling some dark thing inside of me, that was the vibe. I love how heavy it is and then it gets all fucking happy: 'I'm on my way...' There are so many different types of emotion going on at the same time. I really dig that one."

“The End Begins” is the intro to Korn’s thirteenth studio album, The Nothing. It starts with the sound of bagpipes, which can be compared to the introduction of another Korn album, Issues. This is the first album recorded after the deaths of Davis' wife Deven and mother Holly Marie Chavez, which is reflected in the lyrics of songs such as "Finally Free". This affected Davis during the recording of the album, which he treated as a form of personal therapy. We come up with these different chord voicings that are kind of unsettling. What Jonathan Davis is singing about is kind of like the way he receives and gives love and is different from other people. It's different for me, then it's different for you watching..."

When Jonathan grabbed hold of it, it went to another place. I have been through so many things where everything has fallen apart in my life. I mean I can go on and on, my marriage, my band (when I left the band), losing my house and all this stuff. I love the way John took those lyrics and just made it his own. The verses are really emotional and just sounds like a broken relationship or something."
