I'm a software engineer and amateur violist in Houston, Texas. When I was graduating from high-school, I had to decide between pursuing a career in music and pursing a career in the sciences (at the time, physics was my science of choice). My teacher told me that I should only do music if I *had* to do music. I didn't understand what she meant at the time, in fact, I was a bit offended that she'd think I couldn't also do other things. It wasn't until years later I understood she meant I should only do music if I *needed* to do music because I wouldn't feel okay with my life without doing it. I ended up choosing science because I figured I could do science, and do music on the side much more easily than I could do music, and do science on the side. While I still look at professional musicians with a bit of jealousy, I do enjoy that I can continue to make music despite my chosen profession.

Such Great Heights - The Postal Service - viola arrangement
This was a lot of fun to figure out how to arrange. I really love this song, and have for years. I was very lucky to see The Postal Service @PostalServiceBand from backstage in Houston at Free Press Summer Fest (a sadly defunct festival). For the recording, I played the cello part on viola and used software to drop it an octave. On Musescore, I have parts available for both viola and cello for the bass line. I hope you enjoy, I know it's not perfect, but, I'm a) not a audio engineer and b) there's only so much time I want to spend before the fun starts to diminish. :)

I always associate this with the movie True Lies: I'm sure I'd heard it before then, but, the movie made a big impression on me and I can't help but think of it when I hear the piece. It was fun to come up with a gimmick for the video, a great opportunity to wear my uncle's vintage powder blue tux. :) I hope you enjoy! arrangement: musescore.com/user/33311356/scores/20070808?share=copy_link

For the fourth of July this year, I wanted to play this piece, a hymn popularized during the Civil Rights movement of the mid-20th century and often referred to as "The Black National Anthem". The song was written to accompany lyrics written by John's brother, James Weldon Johnson, and I think the cry to march on till victory is won remains true in our world today. This is Elegy: Song Of Mourning, by @heathergoodchildwade2030 She wrote it as “a commentary on the devastating invasion of Ukraine. … an elegy to, and a prayer for, peace.” I was also deeply moved by that unjust invasion by Russia But I found the piece looking for music that would speak to my deep sorrow over the suffering in Palestine and Israel. Notes from when I transcribed this are below. I transcribed this in 2022, and while it was a lot of work, it was so much fun. I decided more recently that I should share on here, after watching some other youtube videos of other transcriptions other people have shared. I love this song, and I wanted to try to do a recording on my own, so I started to transcribe it to then arrange for multiple v...

For Black History Month, I wanted to explore some music written by black composers. Finding viola music is always a challenge, regardless of the criteria you're looking for, so I'm never shy about stealing music written for solo violin and playing it on viola, and this is one such piece, by @leapyearmusiconline . My first recording of this piece is far and away my most viewed piece here on UA-cam ua-cam.com/video/lRWR1t6jNec/v-deo.html. Which I find interesting b/c as was noted by at least a couple commenters, it "needs work". I've been wanted to get back to it and record a better version for a while. This still "needs work", but I think it's a more credible effort. As with my earlier recording, this is...

Recorded and posted to celebrate Burns Night 2023 for my Scottish friends. Niel Gow was a hugely important and famous Scottish fiddle player from the 18th century, and his second wife was Margaret Urquhart, who died in 1805, only 2 years before Niel Gow himself died at the age of 80.

Bravo! Which score are you using? a specific "diteggiatura"? I like it
So I have a couple editions but I pretty much always play from the one I got from my teacher when I was about 13, the Svećenski version. It's gotten a lot of markings over the years, both my teacher's original edits and things I've changed since. :) I know it's not always the most highly regarded, but, it feels like home
I play viola and Star Trek voyager is my favorite show so this means a lot.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it, it really is a song that just gives you goosebumps!
Hey where do you find the sheets
@@Lyenin-vyelikii I didn't have sheet music, most Christmas songs I just know well enough to play from ear
@@eyrieowl well that's incredible, I hope I can reach that level one day
@@Lyenin-vyelikii I'm sure you can, just listen to music a lot and try playing it by ear. It'll be a lot of trial-and-error at first, but, you'll get better. Also, I went ahead and wrote down the music for you, put it online here: musescore.com/user/33311356/scores/21241084
Awesome
Thanks!
This made me teary-eyed. I'm still in the beginner violist stages of my journey, but this is a piece I resolve to play. One day.
@@aeltillialhae6805 I hope you have lots of fun on that journey! One of my main goals in recording these different covers was to show what a fun instrument the viola can be!
Very nice👌🏽
Thank you!

@@Eponine_Sandon it was so much fun to do! So glad you enjoyed it!
As a child I played the violin, and at the age of 11 my late grandfather gave me a bigger "violin", as my 3/4 was getting difficult to use, but he passed away that year, and I didn't find the "violin" he had. gave me, recently I was looking at some old things, and I found a very old and dusty case, and when I opened it I saw this "violin" and I thought and remembered the old one, so I decided to play it again, and I realized that it was a viola, my grandfather bought it a viola thinking it was a violin, but that wasn't a problem, I'm very happy to return to playing, even if using the C clef, I'm still happy to return, and the instrument itself has a more serious and "melancholy" sound ", it reminds me of the music my grandfather liked, with Jazz and that really moves me, I wish he could hear it.
That's a great story. I always encourage people, especially when they had music as a part of their childhood, to try to return to it. So many people are wary of doing so because they know they won't be as good as they used to be, but, there's so much joy in making music and in the progress that you can make as you remember how to play the songs you learned so many years ago. I'm glad you found that old instrument, especially with its connection to your grandfather, and I hope it continues to bring you joy!
super creative

beautiful! glad you felt like "you needed to play the viola"
Thank you, I'm glad I chose viola as well!
love the shirt too😊
Thanks!
Why does it sounds a little bit like a guitar or harp?😅
Pizzicato, or plucking the strings, does create a similar type sound. If you want to see something really interesting, find a video of someone using a device called an "EBow” on their guitar. The mechanism of creating a sound (plucked, bowed, struck) really changes the quality and type of tone produced a lot
@@eyrieowl I will.😇

Hi, i'm an amateur violist in Houston, TX, who just wants to share my love and appreciation for the instrument with the world.
It's amazing that I'm exchanging messages with you in Houston through UA-cam. Anyway, your performance by accident is great. Take care. I live in Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province, Korea. Hi.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's truly great how technology shows ya to interact across the world. Also, one of my very favorite videos of a violist is from Korea, you might enjoy it also: ua-cam.com/video/nnOoAnLL7vY/v-deo.htmlsi=A9UGQ0adYj5oKcpM

Thank you for this performance and for your very moving sentiments. I could not agree with you more. ❤️
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely piece, and for publishing it so that I had the opportunity to find it! Apologies for the less than excellent playing, I know it needs more work but I really wanted to put it out there sooner than later. Thanks again!
@eyrieowl I think your playing shows your depth of feeling. This is what sharing music is all about! If we want perfection, then we ask the computer to play, which is never interesting. I am very grateful and humbled that this music speaks to you in some way.
❤
perfeito
Grácias!
The sound you can produce with this instrument is incredible. How big is this viola?
Thanks! It's a 17.25" (43.8 cm) viola
Also, I just wanted to note that I recognize that the quad-tuple measures are a little strange. If I could, I'd have done those measures in 4/4, but the musescore app makes it difficult to have one part in 4/4 and the others remaining in 12/8. So, quad-tuples were the better option, I felt; otherwise the other parts would switch from 12/8 to suddenly having a lot of triplet figures in 4/4.

👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
Lovely
Thank you!
viola is what i play
Thanks man i can play along that and i love it
Woooow ❤❤❤ 🙌🏻
Thanks!
Hi nice playing but i have a question. why is your bow so short?
Thanks, not sure what to say, though? It's a standard length viola bow. The viola is on the long end, though (17.25 inches / 43.8 cm), so perhaps the larger instrument makes the bow appear smaller?
Every time I hear this, I think of the end of that one TNG episode "The Wounded" with O'Brien singing this.
Beautiful cover of my favorite Trek show theme.
Thank you, it's my favorite as well, still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it.
This is a masterpiece❤
