Hi Gary hi Susan could you please do an episode on the various Blood orange varieties in Australia. I’ve had some frustrating experiences over the last few years trying to find the one with sticky red blush on the outside of the skin. I’ve been left with one that produces red flesh but no blush and one that is just like a standard small orange, both bear extremely small fruit even after thinning and tiny trees. I would like a large 4+ metre blood orange tree with copious amounts of the deeply red blushing skinned fruit. Any ideas on variety and rootstock to achieve that ?

Thanks for excellent information. I understand reasons not to grow trees from cuttings, but what about rootstocks themselves? Can/should rootstocks such as Flying Dragon, Trifolata etc. be grown from cuttings?

This episode was on one of my favourite Citrus Men citrus, Finger limes. The first ones I ever tasted were native to an area Northern New South Wales and this got me totally hoooked on these great citrus. As you said, they really vary and the next ones I tasted were in a supermarket and were quite large in size and cost more than gold by kg., and they were terrible! If that had been my first experience, I do not think I would have tried them again. So, if your first experience isn't great, do not be turned off and maybe just buy one of the Citrus Mens plants, as yoiu know all the hard work of selecting the best varieties has been done for you. I have planted five of your finger limes in the ground and they have just taken off, I have another three or four to go and will be excited to see them get going. I have two desert limes and another great idea with them, is putting them in your beers, especially beer like Corona. Any beers that you use a slice of lemon or lime in, you can use the Desert Lime. I just give the fruit a tiny slit with a knife and then push it into the bottle. I also squish the contents of other finger limes into my gin and tonics.....ahhhhhh bliss!!!!!!!!!!!! I also eat them just by themselves, for a citus explosion in my mouth. I love all my other Finger Limes such as my Astonville, Judy's Everbearing and D'Emerald, but after listening to you two, I may just have to add a few more varieties to my collection. My Red Centre Lime is currently dripping with fruit and I cannot wait to start harvesting. Every house needs a finger lime in my opinion, and now with the dwarf varieties, even apartment dwellers can have one. If your eat seafood, and especailly oysters, there is nothing like those little little balls of citrus caviar , exploding in your mouth, while downing a dozen good oysters, or any seafood , or anywhere you use citrus for taste........as I said, on of my favourites

Well, you guys are not helping my citrus addiction at all....such a wonderful range of new and favourites available for Christmas....I have used The Citrus Men to do my Christmas shopping, for a few years now, since I found you. Everyone loves a beautiful citus plant and even more so when it gives such wonderful fruit. Each year I send your wonderful trees as gifts, and every year people are just so delighted.......one year a friend gave me a gift certificate from you and it was my best present! I will have to get one of the new Pokemondins.......that sounds so exciting Well, I am going, so I can do my Christmas shopping with you. Another great and informative session. I have inherited some old, neglected citrus on country property, that look quiet poorly. I was going to pull them out, but am now going to try a good slash / skeletonize cut back and see how they go. If they bounce back great, if not, time to put some new healthy, Citrus Men plants in. It always amazes me when driving around this country area, and seeing large , old citrus trees, in the middle of nowhere, maybe where a house existed years ago, in full fruit. No water, except rain, no one feeding, spraying or pruning and they are just beautiful and so hardy to be existing and fruiting so well without any care. I am off to slash the old citus.......will let you know how I go.

Another great one guys......I will stop peeing on my lemon! I had heard nearly all of those myths and now know why not to do them. Boy, cannot wait to get my hands on one of those Pokenome Mandarins, they sound just fantastic and you know how I need another citrus plant.......Can never have too many citrus!!!!

Which potting mix do you recommend ?

Such a pity they can't send a parcel properly wrapped and with adequate labelling so it actually arrives in one piece. Instead they try to cut corners by not using strong wide sticky tape to thoroughly wrap all boxes tightly together. A few pieces of thin plastic webbing and no labels are not good enough to withstand the rigors of the Australian Postal system! Citrus men Please respond to my numerous emails.

After watching this the opinion is that they are against self watering pots. I disagree with this. I have all my Citrus trees in Waterups Self Watering pots and they are all thriving. My children also have all different fruit trees including Citrus trees and they are also all thriving. I would totally recommend using Waterups Self Watering Pots.

Thanks guys for another informative citrus episode. I loved when you were talking about the perfume. At the moment my yard is heavy with delicious aroma of citrus...... nothing like it. I go out first thing in the morning, or on a warm night and it is absolute heaven. I think people concentrate on citrus being a "purpose plant'.....eg, fruiting and forget all the other benefits. When thinking about perfumes for the garden, they think gardenias, roses, murrays..( mock orange), daphne, etc, but forget about citrus. What other plants give you beautiful, dark glossy leaves, versatility of use...feature tree, hedges etc., then the most indescribable and delicious perfume, and to top it all off, a wonderful gift of home grown produce, that can be used in so many different ways. Citrus are truly an amazing plants. When you were talking about pest..... I try not to spray and most bugs are seasonal and come and go and the plant survives.....this Winter, there wasn't much food around for the poor old possums and they decided my little grove of citrus in the there pots were the perfect...all you can eat buffet! Some of my plants that werre fruiting, I brought inside at night, while others were left outside to be totally mown down....I was a bit devastated by the damage the possums did, but the resilient little citus have busrt back with fury, and exploded into new growth. The 'possum pruning' has done the plants a favour and they are bushing up. Citrus are just so forgiving.

Im thrilled for this podcast! i've been putting up with American ones which can be very difficult to apply to Australian conditions; so having something based in Australia talking about Australian conditions is invaluable.

Congratulations on your first Citrus Experience podcast.....so informative and such a delight to listen to and watch. Just wanted to let you guys know, I was really interested about the citrus hedge, because I planted one in my first house in Qld., and it was the best hedge I have ever had. People thought I was mad. The shiny deep green leaves, were spectacular, the scent during flowering time filled the entire neighbourhood on a warm Brizzie night, and then the fruit!!!!!!! I was able to supply everyone I knew with lemons and in return, I had an enless supply of marmalades, lemonades, lemon curd and my favourite, lemon delicious.......I think all this started my love affair with citrus. I agree about planting distance, I did 1M apart and that gave me a beautiful dense hedge. I also pruned fairly often in the first two years of their grown, which made me sacrifice fruiting, but gave me a good, dense framework, and more fruit in the end....almost too much fruit, if you can ever have two much citrus fruit. I cannot remember the variety I used, but thing it could have been a Prior Lisbon, which didn't have many thorns and in Qld got two lots a fruitiing a year, and I kept the hedge to about 1 1/2 -2M wide with very little maintenance......so it was lovely to hear and brought back many fond memories. If anyone reading this is hesitating about growing a citus as a hedge......just do it! Also, after a bumper crop of the most delicious Sugar Bubba mandarins, from my small plant growing in a pot, I bought off you two years ago......(sadly just ate my last one), I am looking to see where I can gown a line of these as a backdrop plant, or an avenue of them panted on both side of a garden or road on my property.....I think they would look spectacular. Just different ways to think about using citrus, rather than the lonely lemon tree at the back of the garden, and the idea of espaliering citus is very exciting. thanks again and looking forward too your next podcast.

By the time it gets to landfill it could possibly hatch. Put in plastic bag or burn 😊

Is it possible to root cuttings from a finger lime plant?

This is by far the worst advice I've seen yet. Sure, you'll get rid of the wasps from these branches, but you haven't killed them at all

citrus gall wasp is in Queensland, NSW Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. do not throw into the bin burn or boil them to kill larvae, the traps please be careful as the are not just designed for citrus gall wasp you could be killing any beneficial insects you have in and around your property.

Thanks for the video! I never cut off the galls, as it promotes new growth and the wasps only attack the new growth so its a catch 22 situation. Instead I go around with a blade and cut open the galls (only as far as the outer layer) to expose the lavae and let them dry out. I only cut the galls that don't already have holes in them from where the wasp came out. The ones with holes I ignore. The cut doesn't seem to hurt the tree at all and soon enough the branches have more leaves and fruit on them. I also don't need to put any oils or chemicals on the tree if I keep an eye on the new sprouts and cut any new galls early. I have just put some of the organic wasp traps on the tree. Hopefully this will keep the new wasps that blow in from neighbouring trees from laying eggs. cheers!
