Imaging The Sadr Region
Although astronomically dark skies returned a few weeks ago, the weather here in the north of Scotland has been really bad and so this is my first imaging session of the season (24/ 25)! Really happy to be back out imaging again and I thought I give the equipment (and myself!) a good shakedown by imaging the Sadr region of Cygnus the Swan! This is an area I have never imaged before so I was keen to see how things turned out...

Unboxing and Fitting The Gemini EAF to The Skymax 180: Unboxing, Fitting and Review (Part1 )
Переглядів 5332 місяці тому
Ive been looking for an electronic assisted focuser for the Skymax 180 Mak Cass for some time. Recently on Aliexpress, I saw The 'Gemini' EAF complete with accessories for over half the price of the popular ZWO unit. Having seen some very positive reviews I decided to buy one to use with the Skymax 180, which I use for solar system imaging and see how it performed. Part one of this review deals...

With no astronomical darkness here at 56 degrees north, I thought I'd try some solar imaging using the Daystar Quark Hydrogen Alpha filter. I haven't had much experience with solar imaging, so the long days here during this time of year present an opportunity to gain more - especially with the Daystar Quark. Given that the configuration of the kit I was using meant I could not get the whole dis...

After weeks of rain and storms here in the UK, there was finally a clear night!! As it was Galaxy season, I thought I would try and image 'The Silver Streak Galaxy' (aka NGC 4216), which is actually a complex of more than 20 Galaxies located in the Constellation of Virgo. In this first of two sessions, I review my newly acquired ASKAR 300 FRA Pro Astrograph. Those who follow the channel will realise I haven't posted much content recently. Apart from the fact it doesnt get astronomically dark here at this time of year, Ive also been busy buying a new house. First time in weeks Ive been able to get out and do some imaging. With the nights getting shorter, it will soon be continuous twilight here (at 55 degrees N) until August. Hi there. The visual back thread on the Skymax is a standard SCT visual back thread. The early versions of this scope are not apparently and it sounds that you have one of these. If this is the case, you can buy an adaptor to fit it to the scope. I suggest you contact the vendor and explain the situation and they should be able to sort you out!! I hope that helps!! Hello, Thank you for your review of the Skymax 180. Have you found when doing a star test from inner to outer focusing on a star that mirror flops causes the scope to go out of collimation, I found that with mine and it’s been mentioned on another reviews.

    Thanks Ray, great review of the 2600MC Pro. I am about to splurge on my first deep sky astro camera. I have the ASI-Air Plus, AM5 mount, and Televue 5"inch NP127 refractor. Fully agree that the IMX571 chip seems to be right up there with the mono-cameras. I'm wondering if I should go for the 2600MC Pro (about $2,500 AUD), or the 2600MC Duo which costs an extra $1,000 AUD. The Duo eliminates that extra guidescope/camera (albeit I have one), and also higher full well capacity of the chip, compared to the 2600MC Pro.

      Hi Larry, The 2600mc has a 3.75micron pixel ssize which under ok seeing is a great match for my Esprit 120 APO. A good resource is astronomy.tools/ calculators where you can plug in any telescope/camera combination to work out the degree of over or undersampling is present. From what I can tell 3.76 microns is a good compromise across a wide range of scopes. I suspect your scope wont be radically different to mine..but check it out using the 2 camera specs using these tools. I have to say ive never had any huge issues using the 120 with the 2600mc and any problems ive had have been down to my ineptitude. Hope that helps - thanks for watching!!! Cheers R

    Nice review. The one Con to this camera was dodged by your setup. It is that it works best with an OAG being connected to the camera first to maintain the 55mm backfocus. Unlike the other ZWO cameras with protruding threads these are recessed. As a result…if you use a filter wheel, one must disassemble the wheel, mount a special flange with a light leak seal and more or less permanently mount the wheel to the camera. It also eliminates any tilt adjustment as the filter wheel is in the way of the tilt screws. I could not find anyone…now 2 years later…come up with a wheel mount system that does not take apart the wheel…and very fine screws I might add that will wear down switching it. I had hoped to use the wheel with a series filters on other mono cameras but now it’s locked on to the 2600. I have given up and went with a filter drawer system that gives me the freedom to switch the camera around. I just lost the ASIAir filter automation routine. I think ZWO shot themselves in the proverbial filter foot not following their other camera styles. Especially caught this newbie by surprise. I thought staying in the ZWO ecosystem would avoid this problem. Boy was I wrong. Thanks for the review again.

    • @astrogadge2276

      Thanks for the info Todd. The only filter I use is the l extreme dual band so the filter drawer is perfect. In combo with the oag it gives correct backfocus system with my esprit 120. With the askar 300 fra this largely is irrelevant. Thanks for watching and for the useful comments! Cheers R

    At the end when you are setting the focus of the guide camera why is the lower left corner of the frame dark? Is the hole too small for the sensor? In the previous scene where you focus the main camera I see the branch you will use for the guide camera and there is nothing but sky in the back ground. Thanks.

    • @astrogadge2276
      @astrogadge2276 9 місяців тому

      Hi Thanks for watching! The dark area in the lower left is an exposure artifact as the background (sky) is widely overexposed - the OAG image covers the guider chip - there is no vignetting. Again, the background in the main camera is very overexposed. Remember that the main camera here is a a CCD and the guide camera is CMOS and they have different bit depths. Hope that helps! Cheers R

    Hi, thanks for the video. I have been gathering information to attemp this objetct again (last time was a disaster due to not using filter). Can i ask you about your sky quality? Im going to use the l-enhance filter this time, but i see everybody using the l-extreme for this object.

    • @astrogadge2276
      @astrogadge2276 9 місяців тому

      Hi there! That particular image was taken at a bortle5/6 site (I now live at a 4/5). Best to wait for a really dark night with good seeing. The L-enhance filter is good, and you should be able to get results, but if your funds allow it, I would upgrade to the L-extreme which has a better bandwidth. The image you refer to was taken with the L-extreme. Hope that helps, and many thanks for watching!! Cheers Ray

    Thumbs up for the start of the video. 🙂 Envious of your move to Scotland. I quite often used to spend half of my Scotland vacation at Nairn, but haven't been back since 2012. I'm currently stuck in bortle 6 Stoke-On-Trent and no longer have my bortle 3 and 4 skies in North Wales readily available after my father passed away. My small house is also now cluttered with the gear I used to keep at his house.😮 I miss them both.

    The tablet/ipad screen is no good for flat frames. The reason being the tablet has a refresh rate, so your flat frames will be inconsistent relative to overall brightness/exposure.

    • @astrogadge2276
      @astrogadge2276 10 місяців тому

      Hi..thanks for watching. You can mitigate/ overcome this by lowering the brightness of the screen and increse the length of the exposure. Doing this gives goid results . Hope that helps! Cheers, Ray.

      @@astrogadge2276 Hello. Thanks for the reply. I'm just getting into taking flats and the tablet trick was the first method I tried. I immediately noticed the subtle difference in brightness between frames. Then tested tshirt + sky and there was none differences in brightness. I concluded this was because of the tablet refresh rate, which is correct. I will now try again lowering the brightness with the tablet and increase the exposure. Makes sense, should work. Thanks!

      Hi!! Thanks for the kind remark. The issue I had was I was using the usb hub on the eq8-r mount and a faulty usb lead which caused the problem. I ended up using the hub on the camera with a better quality lead to connect to my laptop, which solved the problem. The camera does come with leads, but none were long enough to reach the laptop. Thanks for watching!!! Cheers Ray

    Thanks for the insights, especially on the focuser. I became serious with astro this year and purchased a William Optics APO for DS photography and this Mak180 for visual and planetary photography. Both are amazing tools which I am still learning to use session after session. I got the same "wow" effect as you yesterday on the Moon and Jupiter. But one day I’ll certainly want to motorize the focuser of this huge scope, that is why your video was so useful.

    Hello, and thanks for the informative video(s). A mount for the 180 Mak? This is my first scope. I'm told that the manufacturers' mount weight limits are far too optimistic. Some recommend to divide the weight limits by 2, especially for Maks which need very stable mounts. Others compare the OTA weight to the mount weight as another guideline. Are the mount specs really that far off?

      Hi!

    • @astrogadge2276
      @astrogadge2276 Рік тому

      Hi, I largely depends on whether you are going to use it for visual use or for photography. The general rule of thumb.is that the ota plus all accessories should not exceed 0.75 of the mound payload capacity. This scope has a long focal length and so will likely be more sudceptible to mount instability. I would say that to 'future proof' the scope somewhere between 0.5 and 0.75 would be prudent. An eq6-r or similar would be a good match imho. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!!! R

    Just ordered a Mak180 from FLO. Posponed the more expensive 9.25 SCT (my ultimate goal, when my observatory has been built). Was frustrated last winter when running a 560mm apo and a 8 inch Newtonian and a 10 inch Dobsonian, in minus 20 to 22 degrees celsius (in an open windy terrain), trying to keep my Newtonian´´s collimated. Hope my new Mak180 will perform in the cold winter, and I´´ll be ready for Beetlejuce if it explodes into a supernova.. Looking foreward to next fall (august/september) when astro-imaging becomes possible again here in Iceland..

      Yes, and double stars also ? I am currently investing in a summer-house on a 2 acre land, where I will be doing most of my imaging in the future (Bortle 4 zone) so I am currently not in the market for a very expensive SCT...(4 to 5 times the price)..
