Stewart was their road manager. That's not the same as obtaining gigs, having the Blues vision, naming the band, and being the band's spokesman.

@@TheaterPup First of all, In the beginning (which is what we are talking about) Stewart was a full member of the band and just as passionate about the music as anyone else by all accounts. And a very good piano player. He was still playing live with them through the 1981 tour. . On top of being a member of the band he was doing all the duties of being a road manager even in those earliest days. . Stewart only officially became road manager after he was fired from the band when Andrew Loog Oldham demanded that to be a pop band and they had to reduce the band size to five. Something that Jones was willing to go along with to achieve fame and fortune. Stewart was the nerd of the group and was seen as the odd man out. Secondly, Yeah, it's not the same as those things Jones was doing. It was more work even while it was more unglamorous. Secondly Stewart was helping finance the band in those early pre Loog Oldham days. He was the only one with a car to haul band equipment and he had money coming in from a day job. Allegedly he financed getting Charlie Watts to join the band who already had an established reputation and had a quota that bands needed to meet for him to play with them.

It's not my intention to downplay Stewart. It seems to be your intention to downplay Jones.@@RonnieLeeDuck

@@TheaterPup I'm not downplaying Jones at all. Indeed, I don't think it is appreciated enough that if any one person can be called the architect of the Stones sound, it is Jones. That sound basically being a level of mastery of the of the great Chicago blues bands of the 50s. Even some of the biggest Jones fans don't seem to appreciate it. Far too much focus of Jones' accomplishments is on him being a multi instrumentalist in later years. I just like trying to get to the truth about Brian Jones and the truth has always been slippery. It has always been buried in conspiracy theories. Because of that, over the years Jagger, Richards, and Andrew Loog Oldham have had to defend themselves from those conspiracies and emphasize what a nightmare it was to be in the trenches with him day in and day out. I did see the documentary a few days ago. I would say it is good and worth seeing, but not great. It actually does not diverge that much from everything Keith Richards has been on record as saying about Brian. However, this idea of Jones being a true "leader" Richards would (and does) disagree with. More generally what the documentary gets wrong is this focus on the idea that there was some battle for power in the band. But that is just Jones' mindset. The rest of the band in those days were happy to be in a R&R band get paid for it.

@@RonnieLeeDuck You actually have no idea if it was just his mindset. And you have no idea whether he was a “nightmare” or not. Brian’s friends outside the band repeatedly have a very different impression of him. That he wasn’t eager to brag about his work or grab credit. That he could be very sensitive and empathetic. I don’t consider Mick and Keith entirely reliable narrators. It’s more than a little ridiculous to paint them as long suffering victims of Brian. They certainly could be “nightmares” themselves by many accounts. But somehow that gets ignored by fans when it’s time to put Brian down. As far as leadership, it’s also quite obvious Mick and Keith always been ambitious. And it’s rather comical of you to paint them as merely happy to be there. It’s like some fans take all the things they’re clearly guilty of and push them on Brian.

Glad he didn't indulge in conspiracy theories.
