Yeah the frost hit us in Indiana too. Most our plants and flowers were messed up from it.

Same here, in zone 8 Carolinas border area, we mulched heavy so some looks semi alive, but few more below freezing mornings are coming so we aren't expecting much to stay alive. Our rosemary, sages some other herbs and red giant mustards are still hardy though!

Have you had any issues keeping your compost tumbler in full sun? Some say it helps heat up the compost too much, some say it helps to speed up the composting. What is your opinion, please. Thank you.

I just bought this tumbler. The instructions say to not put it in direct sunlight. Have you had issues with that?

I have a couple questions. You mentioned that you added some more kitchen scraps before the grass in month 2...can we continue to do this or does this slow down the composting process? Do you ever throw away kitchen scraps because of the compost stage? Can you take only a little compost out at a time or do you need to remove when done and store in a bucket somewhere else?

I think I’m the stupidest thornless blackberry bush gardner. I’ve followed all the rules the nursery gave me and used their nutrition and other products necessary. I’ve cut to the ground the stalk that had fruit and left the rest each time. I’ve tried cutting them to 16 inches and the next year they multiplied and grew 6 feet. But In 4 years all I’ve ever gotten was 12 berries. This year only one. I saw your site “The Stupid Gardner” and instantly thought “I finally found my people!” 😅 🌱

I read that if bluebird houses are within 300’ the males will fight each other for territory.

Will it be safe from squirrels?

Can you tell me how many yards of chips you have here? I have a load coming, but can’t imagine how far 20 yards will go!

I used to have my bluebird boxes on the fence (bluebirds wanted to nest on my fence in a statue I had so I got them legit bluebird boxes in a whim to help them out. Well.. I have cameras and at night a cat came and stared at the bluebird box. The next morning I moved it immediately away from the fence and so far it’s been easy breezy. Didn’t know cats can scale a fence of 6ft or so 😞. I moved away anything that was climbable and put the nests on my house instead. Against a very flat wall with no leverage. Or climbable surface.

-- Compost everything. Always put cardboard down and build sandy loamy soil on top of the cardboard.

The cardboard alone would have done the job.

You know what I just preferred the wooden bins behind you because I’m not putting that together with all of those screws and it’s so small and I need the worms to be helping to break down so this is a no I’m only three years old so I don’t mind using a pitchfork

I had Bermuda roots as deep as I could dig in my flower bed. There is no controlling it really. Good weed fabric helps but isn't 100%.

Does this work for roots in a planter box. I'm disabled and was given a planter box. I pulled out a dead huge bush. And I have all these roots at the bottom I can't pull up. I'm looking to see easier way. Do I do this. Or put plastic down and put my compost over it. Looking for easier solutions. Thanks

How long will the cardboard prevent weeds from growing? It seem like it would be only temporary remedy for weeds.

If the pallet wood has been treated I wouldn't use it, even the ashes.

Hi there, I’ve had a compost Tumblr for two months now. Adding all of my kitchen scrap produce, coffee, grounds, eggshells, etc. And then adding “browns“ that I’ve seen suggestions of online. No bad smells, has plenty of moisture, some liquid drips out the bottom all the time. However, two months later, no heat? Any suggestions about that?

dig a trench and put in a root barrier block. They use this for tree roots. Then, create a "DMZ" zone that the grass won't want to go on from above.. say, a foot wide stone path. The problem with the wood chip is that bermuda has more than one way to spread. the rhizomatic method means you need to stop the roots from invading or else, the moment it spreads to a nice area, it will pop up. Another way that maybe somebody can chime in on is introducing something that is desirable but equally aggressive that will deny the bermuda grass an opportunity to set up roots. Maybe strawberries? Or.. maybe a pH change? For example, planting acid loving plants that like a lower pH. Bermuda wouldn't find blueberry soil to be inviting. Honestly, I'd apply chemicals. They aren't all evil. If you engage in precision shots, you should have more control over the spread. Good luck.

I live in Charlotte and wish Bermuda grass was outlawed! As you said, it is so aggressive and the roots go so deep it seems impossible to get rid of. It has taken over my lawn and is a struggle to keep out of the garden and landscape beds.

I have managed to eliminate burmuda in my garden beds area. Just repeat pulling and repeat applications of compost (on my beds) and woodchips (on my paths). However, in my fruit tree/orchard area outside of my garden beds, I have a large mat of burmuda and johnson grass. I will be using sillage tarps this year while I aquire more wood chips and will keep it covered to weaken the grass roots. I am thinking that a couple years of this method will almost entirely eliminate it. The biggest thing is cutting off it's access to light. That is why the mulch works. Also, I plan to grow some crops through the sillage tarps (Like winter squash) so that the soil has something growing in it, which should discourage the grass from wanting to grow even further since the soil likes something growing in it.

I have been using wood chips 22 truck loads. And leaf's and pine needles. Collect bags of leaves from you neighbors or have them bring them to you. It makes fantastic mulch

Bermuda and Bahaiah grass are tough in my garden too so I feel your aggravation. Take care and have a blessed week my friend.

Definitely look for these second hand, the plastic can degrade horribly even I just one season that people give these away. And it's too expensive to make new plastic cover for it. But if you know how to be handy you can make it work with a plastic sheeting.
