Underrated content keep it up!
Same, I have always sat outside everyone looking for the biggest sets, yes I get less waves but at 56 I'm still doing the same thing; I do wish Florida got bigger surf more often, makes me miss Kauai a lot. ~ 🤙🤙
Go get 'em!
Nice work. Personally, I like the video editing.
Appreciate it!
Well said Gary! Basically it's in your Blood & Soul to do this thing.
Christy Davis has surfed legit Mavs (and bombing OB for that matter) at 69 years old. Hell, he had a heart attack while out at Mavs, had surgery, and surfed again after his recovery. I'm sure Lionel is a nice guy, he's not the oldest by quite a bit.
Lionel was the oldest surfer to surf Mavericks for the FIRST time. Full respect to Christy!
@@agelessathletepodcast Then please reflect that in your title, otherwise it's clickbait. BTW, I'm old and have surfed Mavs, it's right down the road from me.
@@humanbeing2796 where's the confusion? the thumbnail says it clearly that we are talking about his debut at Mavericks

Jeez the guys a stud ! Started surfing at 53 ! People razzing him for not getting a proper wave What wrong with people

Alex Honnold was the first person to free solo El Capitan
free climb is different from free SOLO climb. This lady was the first to free climb El Cap because she used the rocks to get on top, as opposed to aid(ed) climbing that had been done by previous climbers. We, climbers, put protection on the wall to catch us from falling far but we do NOT step on those artificial protections. Aid climbing is placing artificial protections and we either climb on those or webbing/fabric that's attached to those said pro(tection)s. So, yes you technically can AIDED SOLO climb too, but most climbers would not do that.
@ Yep. Climbing lingo is still confusing sadly.. Our sport could use better terminology
That's why I became a crack climber so that I could decide when to put pro in. It was one thing for a 20 year old, with no job, to risk it all for getting your name in the guide book. Then never climb it again. But if you had a job that you couldn't come in on crutches it wasn't worth it. Or it was well below your actual climbing level. This, I think, is why I never broke the 5.11s. Plus, in the early 1990s in Southern California there wasn't a whole lot of places to "train". You couldn't push your climbing without just top roping things, so I didn't.
Thanks for sharing!
This guy commented on John Rocker 😂 I wasn’t aware emotionally unstable and eagerly offended simps rock climb 😂😂😂
No, Steve McClure
True inspiration. I want to surf as long as I possibly can. Healthy diet and mind is key. And just don’t stop
Couldn't agree more. That's the key.
Brilliant and valuable observation. It is true for life also. Thank you for sharing. 1:28
Absolutely! Thanks for noticing that
Good on you again. Hope to surf with you and your crew ASAP. A Full English breakfast after and a chat. Cheers!
Sounds like a plan! Cheers!
1985 I surf Porto 10 feet. Yeah power. Pick the right ones.
Many alohas and best wishes. Hope to surf with you soon and get a few boards as well. A Malik Joyoux and Raimana Van Bastoloear style tow in boards would be sweet! Will try to get the funds to make this a reality and not just a coffee lark. Cheers!
Good on you mate. Watched you shape and got an order form for a custom board at a surf expo in Orlando back a few years . Still want to order 2 customs from you when I can afford it and test them at Pipe and many FUN WAVES regardless where they are. Maybe a 10'6" gun and a tow board for big barrels.
That's the dream, a 10'6" gun and a tow board for big barrels! 😎
outer reefs, not out of reach
sorry, auto generated. Removing for future videos
Your so right. But you need the motivation to compel you to change whatever the habit is. Got a sub from me!
Yes, I would have to agree with that!
400+ watts for 25 minutes??? That's otherworldly. Pro level.
Fake as it gets. Jeff Clark, who practically runs Mavericks is 67 in 2024 and lots of guys in the 60-70 plus age bracket still surf Mavericks on huge days. Surfing it on a mediocre day at 59 1/2 is par for the course. This guy is hyping himself for some reason, but certainly isn't even close to the oldest out here.
He was the oldest to do it for the first time. Emphasis on the last bit
Great comment about letting go of the rope - once you lose it, it’s extremely difficult to get it back. I’m over 60 now and I know that if I lose it again, it probably WON’T ever come back. It’s a good motivator.
Totally, that's SO on the money
So true. I have experienced this at age 51
Wow dude. Way to throw the sacred Cron, land of the LOKEIAM’s, under the bus to add some throb to your bulging surf hubris during your 15 min of UA-cam fame.

First time watching any of your videos and I must say this was an amazing episode. Mark was very insightful, I love interviews with obscure intellectuals/thinkers like him. thank you.
Appreciated! Pls stick around for more ☀️
Love ya Tinker!
Awesome conversation
Iam 69 nov18,2024! Started 1966. Tow me in tomorrow! I'll win the world title! I surfed 50ft faces 1975 North Birdrock San Diego ! The Monster from New Zealand! Paddled in!! Timed the sets! 10ft Guns!! Mahalo!
Christy Davis would like to have a word with you...
Christy cheered him on!
@@agelessathletepodcast Sorry man, Christy may have been cheering him on at 59 1/2 y.o. and as an older athlete/surfer myself, credit given. However, Christy charged into his late 60's (he's an amazing person and a friend), I kinda feel like the title is clickbait as "oldest person" is not the correct moniker.
@@humanbeing2796 not taking anything away from Christy, but read the caption again - Lionel was the oldest rookie at Mavericks

Fair play. Of course he didn't actually paddle out tho... that's a completely different story...
Huh?
@@agelessathletepodcast oh he paddled out? - even more impressive then. kudos.
These are interesting, valuable interviews and you obviously put a lot of work into them, but the many typos in your captions are distracting and take away from your presentation. An editor would help.
These are auto-generated captions. I don't have an editor to add manual captions. Better to have the captions removed? One can always take use the CC feature on YT?
@@agelessathletepodcast Definitely better to remove them if you have the option! (What I am seeing is embedded in the video, not chosen by the viewer as UA-cam generated closed caption).

He would paddle out on winter days at Ocean Beach when there were no takers but lots of guys watching..
Yep! That'd the indomitable Doc for you!
Great advice Dr Mark, much appreciated. For those of us on a tight budget though here is my elcheapo tack. Btw similar age as the Doc i.e. early 70s, surfed since whenever and still manage regular dawn patrols (getting out of bed real early ain't so easy at the time, but it's worth it once you're up). So, fifteen minutes stretching, a couple times a day, based on the salute to the sun yoga stretch, plus a few other tips from free youtube physios. Stretching lets you know by feel which joints to take particular care of and which to strengthen with a little careful weigh bearing exercise. Keeping your weight down definitely helps. As the good doctor says be careful with the risky moves, surf to surf another day. Keep absorbed in surf culture and probably the most important thing is to remember how lucky you are to get all salty, however you do it. Keep the stoke alive.
Love this! Glad you’re still getting after it
Love this topic more than just about anything else right now as someone who got back to surfing after only a dozen sessions or less a year in my 30s and 40s. At 52 now, I'm near the best shape since my early 20s. The part in the interview about diet really caught my attention as I've shifted to vegetarian nearly vegan part of the spectrum and at ideal weight/body fat now. The loss of excess fat cannot be ignored in terms of helping surfing and endurance. Makes you feel like a grom again... not just reducing weight you carry, but the reduction in inflammation makes joints operate so much better. Love the discussion in stretching too. I'm excited that a focus on yoga poses and various stretching like primal squatting and other poses during parts of my evening walks is clearly helping. So much motivation to keep it up so I can at least surf into my 70s if not ride small waves at 80. And a little more money than at 20 for surf travel 🙂
Great interview man thank you as a 66 year young surfer he inspires my journey Bigtime.
Stoked to hear that!
As some who picked up moonboarding recently and been totally addicted, this video is very welcome and eye-opening! Thank you for getting Ben Moon on & getting such insights out of him. Wishing you two all the best!
