The Making of Scrooge (1970)
RARE 16mm cine transfer unseen for years.
I found a reel of film on eBay that I took a chance on, got it transferred professionally (although it has discoloured over the years) and have since donated the original reel to British Film Institute for proper storage and archive.
This is a real family favourite and much loved film and Albert Finney is fantastic in this version.

So this is a thing. The concept was "Two people. Two dreams. How we pass strangers whose lives could easily be our own". The reality was "Let's throw a load of shots together that I quite like, and the narrative will come together at a later point". The subtext was "I'm secretly gay, so I think I'll project this through my friends on film".

Ah 1996. The Bluetones were riding high in the charts and a plucky young man was throwing together a soap opera project for Media Studies. Yes, both school VHS cameras and editing suites were limited in the 90s. No excuse for the script or direction though. Some game performances, however.

Oh jesus. They shouldn't let film students near film cameras. At least tuition fees weren't ludicrously expensive back in 1998.
Gosh, Albert Finney transformed so well. He was so handsome! Loved him in "Erin Brockovich".
The subtext comes through exquisitely.
Love this film. It would be great to meet someone who was in the film. Made the year I was born and I remember watching it on the tv with my grandad in about 1977. I try and watch it every year. Beautiful songs.
Musicals of the 1970s meant to all of us as kids
Years latar albert went on to do the movie erin brocavich in 2000 he must have given up his accent
Love it
My absolute favorite Christmas film. Finney is brilliant!
This movie and it's music are fantastic. But the TV musical Mr. McGoo's Christmas Carol also is wonderful and came out before this. None of the other Scrooges can hold a candle to these two.
Scrooge's Age = 35 years old Past's Age = 83 yeard old Present's Age = 57 years old Mr. Fezziwig's Age = 63 years old Harry's Age = 48 years old Bob Cratchit's Age = 31 years old Tom Jenkins' Age = 38 years old Isabel Fezziwig's Age = 32 years old
My favorite Scrooge - the Thank You Very Much song is so good and I find myself singing it off and on throughout the year! Wish they still made movies like this - no agenda, no revisionist woke nonsense. Just pure classic story telling by amazing actors and director.
Albert Finney was nothing less than superb in his role as Ebeneezer Scrooge. Ronald Neame was a great director….. I have always felt that his performance here was very underrated and that he did not get the credit he deserved.
Here, Here !!!
this was my favorite. 2022
Just got to see this in the theater on the large screen. I saw it for the first time 52 years ago when I was 8. It is the only Christmas Carol movie I watch. I love it! I can't believe they don't bring it to stage.
Just watched this in 4K. I remember in 1973 watching this on the IBM TV Christmas special and it is still my fave!
Thanks for posting. This should be restored and added to DVD releases
This is the best version of them all. A classic.🎀 ✨🕊️#MsWarriorSaint
I love this movie!!! The music and acting is amazing!!!:))) ❤😊
The best portrayal of Scrooge ever!
Love this film. Albert Finney, Alec Guinness, Anton Rodgers, Michael Medwin. Watch it every Christmas!
Thank you for preserving this forgotten documentary and sharing it here 👍
What a Wonderful Discovery! I’ve loved this film since first seeing it at the theater with my late father, and it holds a special place in my heart. I’ve always been curious about the dearth of archival material for “Scrooge” considering the wealth of talent involved, and the lavish production, but chalked it up to changing public tastes as well as the decline and fall of the big budget movie musical. Thank You Very Much!
A masterpiece and Albert Finney was the best Ebeneezer Scrooge. The entire musical production was a sterling one at that. Thank you for posting this video. 🎥🎞
My favorite version hands down!! Magical.
Thank you very much!
The greatest Christmas film of all time! If it wasn,t for Patton which is a slightly better film and the great Geo. C. Scott, Scrooge 1970 would have won Best Picture of 1970 no question, and Albert Finney would have won Best Actor of 1970 as well believe you me !!!!!
Absolutely the best Scrooge ever
When my dad was alive, we would watch this every year on vhs. I have alot of versions now on dvd that i enjoy every year.. ❤️
Today is Tuesday 8 June 2021 - 200 Days Until Christmas 2021
They all fit their part but Sir Alec Guinness and Sir Albert Finney both fit their part the best
This film is ingrained upon my family dynamic such to the point that it and we are inextricably bound to both its beauty and ugliness; terror and joy. Finney is a pure delight and his transformation is tear inducing.
Great upload and gift, @Stephen C Thank you Very much, Thank you very. very, very much! 🎶
Would like to add 'Thank You Very Much' for the song and dance at the end Mr Anton Rodgers (RIP) - perfectly done.
Loved this version! I know it backwards and forwards by heart. The characters are perfectly cast.
Underrated film. Underrated songs.
Today is Sunday 28 February 2021 - Only 300 Days Until Christmas 2021
Albert Finney's acting of Scrooge loosing Isabell and watching over Bob as he's knelt at tiny Tims grave talking to his buried son was **FANTASTIC** and heart wrenching! You SO felt the loss!...and brings more than a tear to your eye... Fantastic acting, fantastic sets and fantasticly portrayed you really believe it's THAT era! An all round *BRILLIANT* film and should be a tradition in every household at Christmas! 🎄 Just GREAT!
Pay Scrooge back you in debt sod's ;)
Thanks Stephen C for posting this! Brilliant!
actually the first would be Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol with songs by Styne and Merrill
I could understand this versen. The first time l saw this movie was when i ten years old. My seventh grade class. I enjoyed very much .
THANK YOU for sharing this!!!!!
Great mini-documentary, and thanks for posting. Leslie Bricusse wrote some of his best music for this film, and that's saying something - his music has appeared in many famous films, including James Bond movies and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I love "Thank You Very Much" and "Father Christmas", and I never tire of "December the 25th" and "Christmas Children". The soundtrack has become a regular part of my Christmas music. Bravo, Mr. Bricusse.
After seeing dozens of versions in my 50 + years, this has to be my favorite 😊
After 12 years of dialysis I got a kidney watch the lisa Baxter show on UA-cam share subscribe thanks blessings kidney awareness education Testimony resources
Wow interesting
I love this picture all of the scrooges
If someone cared ( and it's a big if ) this could be restored and color corrected to look pretty good.
"CLASSIC"!
The selection of the cast for the musical film "Scrooge" (1970) was absolutely brilliant! Albert Finney as Scrooge, Sir Alec Guinness as Jacob Marley, Anton Rogers as soup man Tom Jenkins, David Collings as Bob Cratchit , Laurence Naismith as Fezziwig and Suzanne Neve who played Fezziwig's daughter Isabel were all perfect for their respective roles in the film! Kudos to the director of the film for his superb choices for the cast of the film!
Great Find!
