The Precepts By Numbers
Continuing on from last week's talk, looking at the relationship of Bearing Witness and Aspiration, and of the way in which working with the precepts shows us how 'emptiness' and 'not-separate' show up as me: as this person, these feelings, theses thoughts, right here, right now.

'Holding' Tne Precepts
Переглядів 11214 днів тому
The Zen precepts offer us a structure for our investigation into the relationship of our awareness to our thoughts, feelings and actions, not as 'rules' or 'commandments', but as an open and ongoing process of development. They show us that we are not-separate with our world of impermanence and interconnection, but instead a part of its infinite possibility.
Not Separate: Introduction to the Zen Precepts
Переглядів 19314 днів тому
This is Malcolm's introduction to his set of commentaries on the individual precepts, and their place within Zen practice not as 'rules' or 'commandments', but as a structured investigation into the relationship of our awareness to our thoughts, feelings and actions in our world.
What Do We Do Now?
Переглядів 12921 день тому
The US election result offers us much food for thought: how did this happen? Traditionally, of course, although most Zen students have seen themselves personally as liberal or left-leaning, most Zen teachers have stressed that, fundamentally, politics has no relation to our practice, whatever the outcome. We can even understand some of Joko Beck’s comments in these terms… but is this really wha...
We Bodhisattvas

We chant the Bodhisattva Vows, we study the Bodhisattva Precepts: so who are the Bodhisattvas? I guess they must be us? But what does this mean? (You may hear some background noise on this one...fireworks for our national celebration of a failed terrorist coup 400 years ago...)
Caring
Переглядів 160Місяць тому
This is the commentary on the last of the Ten Applied (or 'Grave') Precepts of Zen. Often treated as a virtual afterthought for commentators, this is actually the key to the whole cycle. It's a modern discipline 'Care Ethics' that has allowed us to see this more clearly, in its move away from thinking of the Precepts in 'judicial' terms. Let's be clear: the Precepts are about how we care fro ea...
Caring Sunset
Переглядів 226Місяць тому
What does ethics have to do with sunsets? Is Zen something to do with 'not thinking?' And what can Henry James' writings about art tell us about a container port? If our sense of ethics begins and develops through our experiencing of the world, perhaps we can trace a thread...
Beauty?
Переглядів 225Місяць тому
Why don’t we talk much about beauty in Zen? Is 'beauty' an 'add on', something nice we can choose to indulge ourselves in, or is it instead the embodiment of our caring as it shows up in how we practice? Thich Nhat Hahn was never afraid to talk of the central place of beauty in Zen practice and in life, and this talk examines how this applies in such simple activities as walking meditation and ...
Caring: Beyond Fear
Переглядів 152Місяць тому
Why is it Kannon (Kanjizai) who speaks the Heart Sutra, and why is s/he said to offer the 'greatest gift', that of 'No Fear’? Can we imagine a society that pays true respect to the caring at its heart? The new discipline of Care Ethics offers insight into the relationship between care, violence, and fear, and starting from our own caring and being cared for, right here, right now.
Caring Kannon
Переглядів 211Місяць тому
This week: what's in a word? Does it matter whether we translate ‘karunā' as ‘care’ or ‘compassion’? I’ll suggest that it matters a lot, because caring is what we do (as caring-about and caring-for) the things that matter to us. Caring offers us the basis for an ethics that is about living rather than being ‘right or wrong’, about taking appropriate action, rather than passing judgement from on...
Generous!

What makes or prevents us from being 'generous'? Is this to do with 'letting go' (last week's talk) of our defences? Or trust in life itself? And what has this to do with experiencing our own vulnerability? Letting Go
Переглядів 3502 місяці тому
We're often told, in our practice and our everyday lives: 'just let go of that!'... but as letting go isn't something INTENTIONAL, something we can DECIDE to do... it ain't so easy... With our ideas of 'letting go' we are on the edge of what we think of as 'me' and 'not-me', and with our notions of control: control of myself, and control of our world. If you have found this talk helpful, please...

When I look in the mirror, who or what do I see? How does that relate to the difference between 'being' my body and 'having' a body? Good News! i discovered that the brain/body is capable of setting itself Totally Free of fear, anxiety, sorrow, despair, loneliness, shame, guilt, confusion, contradictions, addictions, and all other mental/emotional disturbances, in each and every moment of daily life, once and for all, now forever.

This gives birth to True Love, Peace, Happiness, Creativity, & Clarity, for the very first time. Not the love, peace, happiness, that the I, the me, the self, the thinker, the mind, imagines it to be, which is a limitation, imitation, and distortion. It is not temporary. It is happening in each & every moment of daily life, 24/7. It does not take time. It has nothing whatsoever to do with time, effort, or choice. It occurs faster than the speed of light. The children are ready to be set Totally Free at the earliest age so they don't waste their whole life with any mental/emotional disturbances.

I am a 30-year old Christian male from Finland. I like studying religions other than Christianity, as I have read the Bible 4 times (6000 pages total). I ordered a version of the Diamond Sutra and read it beside my bible. In old times, there was no clear distinction between religions. I think, putting religions and people into boxes started at the time of the French Revolution, maybe. Anyway, your voice is very relaxing, like the best ASMR video. "As a lamp, a cataract, a star in space / an illusion, a dewdrop, a bubble / a dream, a cloud, a flash of lightning / view all created things like this." - The Diamond Sutra The Diamond Sutra is one of the main texts of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. I think Thich Nhat Hanh also used it.

Thank you for showing the nuances and depth of judgement. It's easy to fall prey of easy and shallow understanding of much deeper concepts and ideias, I'll keep watching your videos in hopes of learning something. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this video! Because I am addicted to the feeling of emptiness 🤔 and I am wondering if meditation can help me drop the paradoxical adrenaline fuelled search to give life meaning while attempting to bear witness to the emptiness I seek? Strange concept.

Greetings from Finland. I like listening to Buddhist teaching (dharma). Some people call it Zen. It is very relaxing to me. First I listened to Thic Nhat Hanh (Vietnam). I am a Christian by identity (Finnish Lutheran). Siddharta Gautama (Buddha) was a king in India. It depends where Buddha originates from, depending of whom you ask. Some people say Buddha was from Nepal. In ancient times, kings were practicing wisdom. Siddharta Gautama (Buddha) shares some resemblance with the old Jewish King Solomon. He was very wise and rich. King Solomon ruled in ancient Israel according to Christian tradition. In Siddharta Gautamas time (600 BCE), kings were commonly competing in wisdom. Buddhism is 600 years older than Christianity. Peace. 1Kings 4:29 (Douay-Rheims Bible) And God gave to Solomon wisdom, and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, as the sand that is on the sea shore. 30 And the wisdom of Solomon surpassed the wisdom of all the Orientals, and of the Egyptians; 31 And he was wiser than all men: wiser than Ethan, the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Dorda, the sons of Mahol, and he was renowned in all nations round about.

Thank you Malcolm! I was reflecting on your comment about the tension on the realization of death - eventual death - but also the unknown time of it. We seem to be living 'in the gap' of these two realities. A funny memory came floating up of a past trip to London and using 'The Tube' to get into town from Heathrow. The automatic voice warning of "MIND THE GAP" coming over the intercom and printed on the floor tiles - reminded that perhaps this is a suggestion for use all! LOL! "Minding the Gap" is a powerful meditation and mantra for sure - that goes beyond safely using 'The Tube' - A metaphor nested in another metaphor perhaps? Thanks for getting my rusty brain moving! :-)
