Extraordinary 😮
Époustouflant et poétique. Merci encore.
Rest in peace
In addition to his incomparable skill at the piano, Andre was a kind and caring person, whose warmth and thoughtfulness made the world a better place. We were lucky to have him with us for a while.
This music is so much more difficult than Mr. Watts makes it seem. Wonderfully done.
Saw him 5 times
We saw Andre Watts at Tanglewood with the BSO many years ago. We were seated on the lawn and my little son, now 50, was determined to get closer where some adults lifted him up and brought him into the shed. I'll have to be sure to share this with him. Bravo!
Inimitable AW
From Chrome Gemini app: "Andre Watts appeared live on PBS playing from Lincoln Center in New York in 1976. This performance was a significant milestone as it was the first full-length piano recital broadcast nationally on television in the United States."
3:45 hypnosis kicks in, by 4:03, totally possessed until conclusion. A total music takeover
Sus manos son como dos lobos hambrientos. Para mí la mejor versión en directo.
obra maestra de George Gershwin, magnifica interpretación.
Great
I saw him perform twice. Once playing Liszt's Totentanz with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the other was either Brahms piano concerto #2 or Saint Sans Piano Concerto #2, with the San Francisco Symphony. So long ago I cannot remember
Another amazing performance!! A fantastic virtuoso!! Bravissimo!! R.I.P.
I never heard this etude played that way before! So effortlessly, and dramatic! Amazing!!
Fantastic!! Bravissimo!!
He played the most exquisite Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2, and the most commanding Beethoven Emperor Concerto I ever heard, both live.
Victor Danchenko is the concert master.
Prostate cancer took his life.
His hands move more elegantly than perhaps any other pianist I have ever seen. Remarkable.

So lucky to have lived in his time
Music meant so much to him, his gift to us.
Iucky to be alive as his time, no words ...
While my son was in college at IU, he worked at an upscale restaurant in Bloomington. Andre Watts was a regular customer and the staff used to race to be the one to wait on his table. Not only was he the best tipper, he was an extraordinary human being - kind, genuine, and brilliant. My 21-year old son suddenly became an avid listener to classical music and was so saddened when he passed away last year. A truly great man with boundless talent and genius.
My son was a music major at IU during André Watts' tenure, although not a pianist. I studied piano in undergrad and graduate school and had several encounters with him over the years. The last time we met was at the Jacobs School of Music in 2008. I'd taken my piano students to a concert on Indianapolis 2 years earlier and Andre met with us after the performance. When we met in '08, we exchanged pleasantries and talked about my son who'd won 2 Olympic medals in Beijing during the summer and brought a different kind of pride to Jacobs. What I really should have said to André at that time was how much his kindness, his generosity, and his transformational musicianship and pianism meant to me. I should have thanked him for his presence on the stages of the great concert halls, which stood as a testimony that performing instrumental classical music is for all people; we all as humans of every shade and hue can be impacted and captivated by it. I should have thanked him for taking time out back in 1981 to call a young African American female graduate student to arrange the interview she wanted to do with him concerning the Brahms piano concerti--45 minutes of her life that were transformational for her. I wish I had, but I did not, and we did not meet again. I am forever grateful for his time here on earth, and very grateful that he shared his gifts with those at IU.
It is absolutely shamful that there wasn't a single word that got to me about Andre Watts' death in 2023. He was an icon, underrated without a doubt! RIP, piano legend!
I agree. It was shocking to me that the New York Times didn't do an obituary.
@Nodalema Should have been front-page news!
I was privileged to hear him in my youth in Chicago, must have been late '60's and it was my first time hearing the Liszt Sonata - and still the best! I am Swedish but got the news through Mark Ainley's Piano files, which I follow. To give you some perspective - when our great and internationally acknowledged soprano Elisabeth Söderström died inn 2009, there was not a single notice in Swedish newspapers. My daughter was in her first year as a student at the Univ. of Edinburgh and the Scotsman did a 2-page spread on her career and legacy. I am ashamed that my fellow Swedes did not make note of the passing of this great artist. I understand that you are disappointed.
@Nodalema they did one eventually.
I feel the same way as many of you do. André Watts was to me what some actors and pop stars are to others, yet there was this added dimension of a shared love for classical piano and pursuit of playing. Of course, I was not on his level of mastery, but I did earn a graduate degree in piano performance. It was that degree that pushed me past being a starstruck admirer of Watts to actually seeking out a face to face meeting with him to discuss the Brahms piano concerti. That face to face occurred in 1981, along with several other encounters over the next 25+ years. I was able to take a group of my piano students to meet and talk with him in 2006. André's kindness and generosity with his time on those occasions will always remain with me, along with that immense talent, musicality, and intelligence. That starstruck teenager may have always lurked somewhere in me, but I will always be grateful for the opportunity to get to know André Watts a little. I still mourn his passing. There will never be another like him.
Even watching and listening tell you these are technically demanding preludes.
A genius!
holy shit this is how art tatum would sound if he played classical
I ahree.😄
I bet he's in heaven playing classical right now
Que gran pianista!! El mejor!! ❤❤❤
I saw him perform in Chicago when I was a child in the long ago 1960s.
I continue to come back to this video, and after nearly a year since his passing. I still struggle with the knowledge that he's gone. This video is a comfort. ❤
A great conductor, Zubin Mehta, a great orchestra New York Philharmonic, and of course the great Andre Watts. Their likes will never be seen again.

Yes, Watts favorite my generation.. words fail, it is all masterful and ego free...to be so exquisite and humble
